Velox Isles -OLD-

▣ ▫ Raptors Overview ▫ ▣

Raptors are the dominant and species on Velox. They are intelligent and capable of creating tribes, tech, and a civilization. The world may be a dangerous place but they are able to think, create, and overcome their environment and even create things to make life easier. While many lead nomadic tribe lives, many raptors have settled and created villages in which to reside.

Magic is commonplace here. Everything, even the rocks and plants posses the magical energy within. Raptors believe that the magic one is born or created with embodies the soul. And this soul defines what and how they are to act. Rocks are hard and heavy because their magical soul tells them to be that way. The practice of magic is using ones own magical energy to alter the rules something is governed by.

Raptors are a species very susceptible to change. Meaning that they can pick up or randomly show new traits or mutations. This nature makes their diverse visual traits make them hard to break into easy subsections. They simple mix and mutate too easily to have or really keep clear trait lines. Even children are prone to picking up things even their parents can't explain.

There are however still two general types of Raptors, Terran(Land Bound) and Aquatic(Sea Bound). As the only thing that doesn't seem to go both ways is the ability to breath air or water this defines the two categories. Each of these two types have typical traits but they are not exclusive. For example most Terran have hind legs, some have serpentine bodies.

They don't reproduce the way many animals do. Instead they preform a sacred reproduction ritual that imbues that parents energy into a special carved stone or crystal. The 'eggs' then develop and crack open when the life inside is ready to emerge. This process can sometimes be sped up or enhanced with Monarch magic to hatch early or emerge as adults.

Egg -> Hatchling -> Adult -> Chrysalis -> Monarch

  • Raptors reproduce magically. Imbuing ones energy into special stone or crystal carved eggs. After the life granting ceremony life grows within the stone egg and eventually hatches out of the remaining thin shell.
  • A typical clutch is 2-3 eggs. Though the number can vary.
  • IC eggs hatch in roughly 3 months. OCC they hatch in about 1 wk.
  • Many orphan eggs & hatchlings are taken in by or given to the Kaleidoscope tribe.

  • A hatching is a broad term to describe all hatched raptors not yet matured.
  • When a youth reaches age they will undergo an age ceremony or trial depending on tribe practices.
  • Often hatchlings will be given the chance to shadow, train, or otherwise discover a role for them to learn and be of use to a tribe.

  • As adults, raptors are expected to pull their weight within the tribe. Those that don't or don't meet expectations are typically expelled.
  • Mature enough at this point any adult is allowed to find mates and seek reproduction rituals.
  • They may also choose to set out on their own or create their own tribe.

  • Large hardened cocoons woven by adult raptors that are ready to go through metamorphosis to Monarch.
  • Raptors going through this process will go into a trance-like state and be drawn to a safe place. High places are a favorite of the Land Bond and deep crevices are a favored spot of the Water Bound. Though this is not always the case.
  • Once they are ready they will emerge in a dramatic process called Emergence.
  • It is not fully understood what exactly triggers this event to occur but it tends to do so in the elder, more experienced, and magically in tune. However, outliers have been observed.
  • IC this takes between 2-3 months. OCC this stage lasts a wk.

  • This peak of raptor growth!
  • Their magic levels skyrocket. Actual levels can again vary however, all Monarchs possess much deeper wells than they did before.
  • They carry an aura about them that seems to instill a sense of awe and respect from others.
  • Other Monarchs seem immune to each other's transfixing aura.
  • All Monarchs can fly/glide/hover with a thought. Wings are not a requirement and do little to reduce magic costs.
  • They are able to create larger clutches, due to their greater magical reserves.
