Acquiring a Character
Welcome! If you're here, you must be interested in playing with us, so we offer you a warm greeting and a lovely wall of text to try and make your joining as easy to understand as possible. Remember, if you have any questions you can always reach out to staff to ask, but we ask you read everything thoroughly first!

The first thing you need to know is that you do not require character art to apply for a human character, and if you do have art it doesn't have to be from the shop! All you need to start the process of acquiring a character is to formulate an idea of someone that might be interesting or fun to place into the world of PE.

In order to do this, we do recommend that you read over the informational documents available here in the group. This will give you an idea of the setting and history of the Nauwill region as well as options for affiliations and occupations that a new arrival might have there. It'll also give you a good idea of the association dynamics in the region and any major happenings that might have occurred since the opening of the shop.

However, should you want shop-created characters, we do have an open "adoption center" for portraits meant to help you get started! This service is completely free, so don't hesitate to take a look and see if we have anything in stock that strikes up a muse.

Once you have a good idea in mind, you can proceed to working on the actual application for your character! Every character must have an approved profile before they can roleplay and participate in the shop to ensure that they fit into the world.

To get approval, you will post a thread in this forum with the profile form and stat form below. You can post this and work on it at your leisure or you may work on it externally and post when ready, whatever is more comfortable for you. When you're ready for a mod to look at your thread, check the end of the stats post for what to do next!

See the next post for where to go from here.

Character Creation FAQ
Can I make a character who is already a trainer?
Yes, of course. Pokémon from outside Nauwill are mostly banned from being brought in without special permission and a quarantine, so having a trainer who has mons that they had to leave in another region is perfectly reasonable for any new character.

If you'd like to have a pokémon that isn't caught or born in Nauwill, these are only available through Imports. Imports are special customs and RLC offers that allow you to obtain mons from outside the Nauwill pokédex or that are already evolved and/or experienced. These will be announced when they are available.

Note that while you can design a character who has pokémon they left at home or are attempting to get through quarantine, you cannot use or "get" that pokémon until you acquire an appropriately matching one in the shop. Joebob can have ten charizards or stuck in quarantine for Import, but you can't use any of them until you get a piece of art to match, whether through customs, RLC, events, etc!

Can I make a character who is a regional champion?
No. Since your character stats will start at a base level, it wouldn't make sense for a new character to be one of the strongest trainers in the world! At most, you can have a character who's earned up to four badges from any regional League challenge (or one trial from Alola).

Can I make a professor/teacher/breeder/other traditional pokémon occupation?
Yes! Do remember your character stats, so in line with trainer power levels you shouldn't make a professor who's discovered tons of new mons or breeders who have raised tons of rare or perfect mons.

Can I make a student?
Yes. VCA's association with the Nauwill exploration is specifically to allow experienced students from their halls as well as schools across the world to come and study in the region.

Can I just make an average person?
If you want to! Fairlight Co. is seeking to colonize the region, so of course they'll need colonists! Builders, shopkeepers, doctors, mechanics, bakers and cooks - anything that would be useful in a city would be useful in the settling of the island. However, remember that if you want to participate in expeditions and research, your character will need to take an interest in these areas too!

Character Self Application

The first step is formulating your character's self - their history, personality, affiliations, and the like. This is of course just the core of themselves at the time of entry; you won't be expected to keep them rigidly the same after roleplay and development! However, this process ensures that you have a good feel for the world and you have an idea that won't cause any hiccups for you to write and play without moderator oversight.

There is no minimum length for any of these sections, but you'll need enough to get your information across. You do need to fill in every section (except image and history if you do not have one) however; if you're uncertain of an answer, try and figure it out! There's a channel in our Discord for plotting if you want to toss ideas with other players, and of course you can always post in the main thread for the same as well.

Please note: you may not use images that aren't yours for your character image. Do not pull random designs from DA, image searches, anime, video games, etc.

Code:
[B]Character Image[/B]: (delete if none)
[B]Character Name[/B]:
[B]Pronoun Choice[/B]:
[B]Age[/B]: (minimum 18)
[B]Home Region[/B]: (Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova, Kalos, Alola, Galar, Orre)

[B]Personality Overview[/B]: (please no more than six sentences; just a quick summary!)
[B]Five Likes[/B]:
[B]Five Dislikes[/B]:
[B]Hobbies[/B]:
[B]Three Strengths[/B]: (include an explanation for each; these are personality traits, not skills or physical attributes - something like "loyal" or "diligent," not "super dextrous" or "hale and hearty")
[B]Three Flaws[/B]: (include an explanation for each; these are personality traits, not skills or physical attributes - something like "manipulative" or "lazy", not "physically frail" or "clumsy")

[B]History[/B]:
(You may leave history blank if you are bringing a blank slate with no important past to Nauwill)

Character Stat Sheet
The second step in creating a character is to fill out their character sheet! Unlike the pokémon games, human characters here are acknowledged to have their own set of skills and abilities that grow over time. These skills may help in exploration and research, and of course you can use them in your own private roleplays to add a little uncertainty to tough situations.

Below you'll find an example character sheet and the code for your own. Every stat is represented with a number of dots, filled and unfilled. Stats are divided into three sections: attributes (your core abilities), social (your social abilities), and your skills (learned abilities).

For each section, you'll start off with certain number of points to assign. You'll do this by changing an empty circle into a filled one on the character sheet. Assign all of your points as desired, fill in the informational sections, and you're done! Check the spoilers below for information on each stat to learn what it does, and don't forget you can always ask us questions if you're confused about something. All level descriptions are taken (with minor editing) from the Pokérole Core book, which the shop's systems are based on!

Unless you've been directed otherwise due to an event, you may allocate the following number of stats - and remember that attributes and social start at 1, so you don't have to pay for the first dot:

Attributes: 6 points, no stat higher than 5
Social: 6 points, no stat higher than 5
Skills: 9 points, no skill higher than 2

Remember this general scale for stats: one point is low, two is average, three is good, four is excellent, five is superior, and six is inhuman, generally only given for reference/comparison with pokémon!

When you're ready for a mod to look over your character, post a thread with the form if you haven't already then set the title of it to: "[CA] Character Name (Mod Ready)". After, either post the link in the #help-me channel in Discord or the Moderation Needed thread here in the group. Please don't do both!

Strength determines physical strength (shockingly). It's indicative of how much a character can carry, how hard a character can hit, and how well developed a character's muscles are. It doesn't necessarily indicate bulk, as lean people can be just as strong as those with larger mass; it only indicates raw capability.

⬤⭘⭘⭘⭘
You are a wimp; a strong wind could knock you down.

⬤⬤⭘⭘⭘
Your strength is average, though you could use a little exercise.

⬤⬤⬤⭘⭘
You can show off at the gym! Your physical power is something to be seen.

⬤⬤⬤⬤⭘
You could be a professional body builder or weight lifter.

⬤⬤⬤⬤⬤
You could move a big boulder out of the way without trouble.

⬤⬤⬤⬤⬤⬤
You have the strength of an ursaring - enough to tear apart a car!

Vitality is used to determine how resistant a character is to pain and weariness. It also indicates how healthy and vigorous a character is. Higher vitality also means higher defense!

⬤⭘⭘⭘⭘
You look frail and likely tire easily. As for pain, a paper cut would probably leave you in tears.

⬤⬤⭘⭘⭘
Small amounts of pain won't make you cry, but you can't endure much of it. You'd get winded after a good jog.

⬤⬤⬤⭘⭘
You could probably run a marathon easily enough, and you could probably stay awake for a few days at a time if you needed to.

⬤⬤⬤⬤⭘
You could work as a stunt double in dangerous action movies! You keep going long after other people drop from exhaustion.

⬤⬤⬤⬤⬤
You could walk away from a car crash, no problem.

⬤⬤⬤⬤⬤⬤
You could probably take bullet seeds to the abs and laugh it off!

Dexterity is used to determine not only speed, but flexibility and coordination as well. People with high dexterity may be quite quick or bend themselves into and out of pretzels with ease.

⬤⭘⭘⭘⭘
You're quite clumsy, and you might bump into or trip over things often.

⬤⬤⭘⭘⭘
You can climb a tree, though getting down may be another matter.

⬤⬤⬤⭘⭘
You could practice parkour or rappel with ease.

⬤⬤⬤⬤⭘
You could be a professional dancer or athlete with your swift and graceful movement.

⬤⬤⬤⬤⬤
You could try pole jumping without the pole.

⬤⬤⬤⬤⬤⬤
Your sprint could match a jolteon's!

Insight is the ability to be aware, perceive, and understand yourself, others, and surroundings. It's the power of the mind to understand and see beyond the mundane.

⬤⭘⭘⭘⭘
You don't understand sarcasm and barely notice anything beyond the obvious.

⬤⬤⭘⭘⭘
You perceive the world around well enough. You do a little introspection from time to time.

⬤⬤⬤⭘⭘
Your gut feelings are quite accurate most of the time, and you have a decent understanding of pokémon that are comfortable with you.

⬤⬤⬤⬤⭘
You can clearly understand the intents of pokémon trying to communicate with you, even if they can't speak, and you pick up on details others might see as invisible.

⬤⬤⬤⬤⬤
You feel the connection between yourself, others, and the world.

⬤⬤⬤⬤⬤⬤
Like blissey, you can sense the energy and emotions of those around you with ease.

Social attributes indicate a character's capacity for acting or presenting a certain way. Even the toughest character isn't tough 24/7, and even the cleverest of detectives have moments of total brain rot.

Toughness is used to command respect and intimidate or coerce others. If a character needs to face something head on or stand in the way of others' aggression, being tough is the way to go.

⬤⭘⭘⭘⭘
You're as intimidating as a cute garden lily.

⬤⬤⭘⭘⭘
It can be scary when you make an angry scowl.

⬤⬤⬤⭘⭘
Others fear and/or respect you, depending on your actions.

⬤⬤⬤⬤⭘
You command the ultimate authority.

⬤⬤⬤⬤⬤
Even a raging dragon would think twice about crossing you.

This attribute makes for a charismatic, confident, and trustworthy attitude, whether dealing with humans or pokémon. It can be used to break quarrels, influence people, and in making new friends!

⬤⭘⭘⭘⭘
You're kind of awkward and rarely talk to people.

⬤⬤⭘⭘⭘
You can easily make new friends and be good company.

⬤⬤⬤⭘⭘
You're a people person and generally quite popular.

⬤⬤⬤⬤⭘
You've got the charisma of a superstar, and everyone around you wishes they could be your friend.

⬤⬤⬤⬤⬤
You could cheer up a voltorb that's about to explode!

Beauty can indicate physical beauty and good looks, but it can also indicate elegance and a classy demeanor. A high beauty score can help get others' favor and leave others impressed with a character's ability to make it seem easy to be perfect.

⬤⭘⭘⭘⭘
Your manners and personal looks need a lot of work. Are you related to a garbodor or angry mankey?

⬤⬤⭘⭘⭘
You look nice when you dress for the occasion, but a little make-up doesn't hurt.

⬤⬤⬤⭘⭘
People often compliment you, and the air around you makes it seem like you almost glide when you move.

⬤⬤⬤⬤⭘
You attract the looks and favor of everyone around you as though you were some sort of royalty.

⬤⬤⬤⬤⬤
Others would pay to be in the same room as you. You're way out of everyone's league!

Clever is the capacity of the mind to remember, comprehend, and solve problems. Characters need it to understand things around you and be capable of finding out the best solutions.

⬤⭘⭘⭘⭘
You don't pay much attention to anything; problems go over your head most of the time.

⬤⬤⭘⭘⭘
You usually understand what's explained to you, but personal tutoring would help.

⬤⬤⬤⭘⭘
Your memory and analysis skills are sharp. Your mind is always busy.

⬤⬤⬤⬤⭘
You're gifted with quick analysis, precise judgement, and superb power of concentration.

⬤⬤⬤⬤⬤
Only the great mysteries of the universe would pose a challenge to your sapience.

Cuteness can indicate a sweet and innocent behavior that lowers everyone's guard. It gives a character an air of pureness that makes others want to protect them, though this sweetness may be deceiving as it's also good for manipulating through charm.

⬤⭘⭘⭘⭘
Please ... stop smiling. It's creepy.

⬤⬤⭘⭘⭘
You can pull out puppy-eyes, rosy cheeks, and a playful attitude when you want to.

⬤⬤⬤⭘⭘
You easily melt hearts and can make everyone around go "D'awww."

⬤⬤⬤⬤⭘
You have all the charm of cotton candy and peppermint dreams.

⬤⬤⬤⬤⬤
You're the walking embodiment of innocence and purity.

Unlike other stats, skills don't have individual descriptions for each level, but you can view the number as how well a character knows how to handle that skill. A score of zero means that a character is totally unfamiliar with that skill - they can always attempt to do it totally untrained, but they've never been taught how or practiced in any way. Beyond that, dots correspond to experience levels similarly to attributes and socials: no dots is untrained/unfamiliar, one is a neophyte, two is an average understanding, three is well trained, four is masterful understanding, and five is one of the top users of a skill.

All new characters are considered "beginners," meaning they can't dump all their points into one skill. You're limited to two dots in any one skill as a beginner, but don't worry - you'll be able to level them up later if you want!

All skills are assigned one of five categories: Fight, Survival, Social, Knowledge, and Extra.

Fight
Brawl
The ability to fight in non-ranged combat with punches, kicks, bites, and so on.

Throw
The ability to throw things, including rocks, bait, and pokéballs, accurately and with precise aim.

Evasion
The ability to dodge or avoid attacks and impending danger.

Weapons
The ability to use weapons and traps to defend oneself when a pokémon isn't available to do it for you.

Survival
Alert
The sharpness of senses, which could be good eyesight, great hearing, an excellent sense of smell, or just a practiced general awareness.

Athletic
The ability to get the most out of one's body, with knowledge and practice of how best to run, climb, walk, jump, and any other sort of intense physical activity.

Nature
The ability to use things from the wilds to survive; includes skills like creating fire from scratch, recognizing edible plants, building shelter, or finding good drinking water.

Stealth
The ability to move silently and be able to blend into surroundings to go unnoticed.

Social
Allure
The ability to make others, both human and pokémon, think one is interested in them and make the feeling seem genuine.

Ettiquette
The knowledge of good manners, refinement, and grace, usually used in formal or professional social situations.

Intimidate
The ability to forcefully persuade others through actions such as glaring, sharp or harsh words, or even just making oneself appear puffed up and difficult to defeat.

Perform
The ability to put on a performance, including talents such as dancing, singing, acting, and even bluffing. Anything that needs a convincing act will benefit from perform.

Knowledge
Crafts
The ability to build things with your hands (and maybe a few tools). Things like drawing, sculpting, cooking, repairing, and so on fall under this category.

Lore
Knowledge about different pokémon, legends from other regions, and the ability to link these two information pools effectively.

Medicine
The knowledge of how to take care of wounds and apply first aid or emergency care. Knowledge of how to create some basic remedies could also come from this skill.

Science
Knowledge in a particular field of science, such as computers, chemistry, physics, geology, pokémon evolution, engineering, and so on. Note! You must choose a specialization when taking this skill! You may note extra specializations as separate skills in the Extra section, allowing you to, for instance, create a character that is an expert in both computers and pokémon nutrition.

Extra
Any special skills awarded from play will be noted here. In addition, any duplicate skills that require a specialty (such as science) will be listed here for ease.

HP is health points, that is, how much physical damage a character can take before being seriously injured, knocked out, or even killed. HP is equivalent to 4+vitality, for a maximum of 9 points for a human!

Confidence, on the other hand, represents a character's emotional health. This is how much emotional damage they can take before having a mental breakdown, including things like intense stress, trauma, bullying, and the like. Confidence is equal to 5+insight, for a maximum of 10 points for a human.

Please note: it's recommended that you activate the non-editor mode first by clicking the gear at the top of the text editor, paste the code, then go back to WYSIWYG mode by clicking the gear again in order to edit the sheet properly. It's made of a few tables in order to keep the layout even, and tables are a little annoying to edit in code form!

Final Approval

Once your character stats are approved, your character is ready to go! Your thread will receive a final update copying your sheets into an easy-to-copy code block, then will be locked and moved into the Approved Applications subforum. Once this is done, you may create a journal for this character in the Character Registrar subforum, and you may also begin using them in roleplay, expeditions, and research tasks!

Congratulations and welcome to Pokémon Expeditions!
