There were worse ways to spend a sunny afternoon than taking a stroll through the grasslands outside of town. After their last few harrowing trips through the Darksallow Valley, Pip thought they deserved a slightly more relaxed expedition. Besides that, they had come into possession of a number of new pokemon that they wanted a chance to take out that they weren’t prepared to subject to that death trap of a forest. Although, a couple of them had actually come from the valley.

In particular the sweet little chinchou (the newly minted Chi-Chi) and the retiring little tangel (now named Teak). Although both had come from the pit-hole nightmare realm that was Darksallow, this was Pip’s first time taking them outside the city and Pip would rather limit the variables in play. However, before they got their turn, Pip was doing a bit of work with their new growlithe Coal.

She was a very obliging girl – sweet, attentive, and calm. The perfect characteristics for a partner that you hope to train for complicated tasks. Growlithes were well known to make excellent service pokemon, and Pip was excited to get to work with one who seemed so promising. They always kind of wished that their family had been in the business of training dog-type pokemon, rather than water-types. Not that other elements didn’t present their own set of dangers, but Pip figured they’d rather take their chances on solid land, thank you very much.

Pip gave the recall signal to Coal, who ceased her play in the tall grass and ran back to her trainer who dutifully rewarded her with a treat. She gave a little yip and ran back off after being released, but she didn’t go far. Considering how little time they had been working with her, she was doing remarkably well.

Wild Battle
One or more aggressive pokémon attack! Roll 1-100 and determine which pokémon you've found from the area's chart; all players find the same pokémon, so only one person needs to roll. Each player is allowed to roll one of their pokémon's STR or SPEC + VIT or DEX vs the event's difficulty, if they brought a pokémon; if they fail, that pokémon loses 2 VIT. If a player succeeds, they can roll their character's DEX + their choice of ball's Catch Score vs the event's difficulty to try and catch one of the now defeated wild pokémon.

Pip watched Coal frolic and took stock of her form. They would have to do some more research on the kind of training they wanted to do with her. Although they had done similar work with some of the pokemon back home, they wanted to make sure they were up to date on the latest techniques. There was a woman out of Lumiose who specialized in furfrou they could reach out to. A lot of people wrote off furfrou because they were best known for their popularity in beauty contest circles, but they were smart pokemon and had a strong history as working dog-types. They-

Their musing was cut short by rustling in the grass between them and Coal. A wild pokemon!

They hadn’t run into any pokemon together at all, never mind having been in this kind of situation before… Coal hadn’t noticed the creature yet, but if she did, would she look to Pip for direction or attack immediately? So far she seemed to default to checking in with her trainer, but who knew how much of a prey drive she had.

Unfortunately, Pip never got a chance to find out. Before they could even try and get her attention, there was another rustling in the grass, this time closer to Pip, and Twist jumped out! Pip wasn’t even sure how they got out of their ball! Their hand dropped to where the pokeballs they brought were situated on their belt, and, sure enough, two of the six were vacant.

The spooky little rattata leapt at the other pokemon, still hidden from view. The tall grass blocked Pip’s view, but the sounds of the scuffle intensified as the two little pokemon fought it out. Coal was closer than Pip and arrived before they did. She jumped into action, barking and growling. Pip got there just in time to see a scatterbug taking off.

It appeared, for all their usual terrifying scrappiness, Twist had not been victorious. The poor little guy was lying in the grass at Coal’s feat, completely passed out.

“Well.” They said, clicking the button to recall the rattata. “I guess there is something to be said about learning from experience.”

Although they doubted it would do much to curb the little guy’s…. tenacity.

“You did a good job Coal.” Pip praised, reaching down to give her some reassuring pats. “We should do some battle drills, while I’m thinking about it though.”

They took a look around the area to find a promising location to train. There was still a bunch of debris washed up along the shore that could make for some expendable targets, so they called Coal to heal and made their way down to the beach.

The little growlithe happily took her place beside her trainer, not really caring much about what they did and knowing that doing so would get her delicious treats. Once they were down there, Coal couldn’t resist running up to the water to splash around a bit. They came back quickly after Pip called, and shook the water off her coat as soon she was clear.

Pip was caught in the spray, but, as usual, they were wearing their swim clothes, so they weren’t that upset at getting unexpectedly wet. They directed Coal to some driftwood they had lined up for her to practice her attacks on. She was pretty responsive, not needing to much instruction before she started getting the hang of the drill.

Unfortunately, when she directed her attack to one of the logs that Pip had not set up themselves, it turned out another pokemon had been making use of it as a nest! Some local weedles jumped out of the damaged log and pounced on Coal! She was quickly overwhelmed, and Pip recalled her quickly before she could be too damaged.

Thankfully, once the growlithe was gone, the Nauwillian weedles seemed content to return to their nest. Still, Pip decided to move along down the beach before they changed their mind and came after them.

4A surprise patch of loose gravel sends someone hurtling face first towards a prickly berry bush. Roll DEX + STR to avoid danger.Trainer Danger1

Trainer Danger
The players encounter a danger, whether terrain or pokémon based, which directly threatens one or more players.

If the event indicates all characters are in danger, roll the directed stats vs the event's difficulty for each character. If a character fails the roll, they lose 1 VIT for the remainder of the Expedition.

If the event indicates one character is in danger, players decide which character will be targeted; players may roll 1d20 with the lowest number being targeted if they don't want to decide themselves. That character rolls the directed stats vs the event's difficulty. If they fail, that character loses 1 VIT for the remainder of the Expedition.

Pip took a couple of the pokeballs off their belt and considered who they should bring out next. They had intended to bring Coal back out as soon as they were clear of those local weedle, but now that they were down by the water they wondered if maybe they shouldn’t take someone else out instead. They clicked the button on Chi-Chi’s ball so that the little chinchou joined them on the sand.

Chi-chi immediately shuffled up to Pip, rubbing their big bulbous head up against their leg in greeting. A few stray sparks arched from his antennae to his trainer, but Pip had braced themselves for it and managed to stop their leg from spasming and punting the pokemon like a football. Still, they took a step back and gestured to the ocean. “You want to take a swim?”

7Uh oh, one of your pokémon has something gross in its mouth... Roll (DEX or STR) + INS to avoid eating something dangerous.Pokémon Danger2

Pokémon Danger
The players encounter a danger, whether terrain or pokémon based, which can or should be tackled by a pokémon instead of a human.

If the event indicates a simple danger, one at a time players may choose a pokémon to roll the indicated stats vs the event's difficulty. If they fail, that pokémon loses 1 VIT for the remainder of the Expedition. The event cannot be finished until all players have rolled at least one pokémon (if they have any available).

If the event indicates a major danger, each player may choose one pokémon to roll the indicated stats. Add up all successes vs the event's difficulty. If the players fail, they are Knocked Out and must end the Expedition.

The chinchou didn’t require any additional prompting to start toddling off towards the water. He started making pleased little noises the moment he met the gentle waves, and bobbed along happily after Pip as they made their way farther down the beach.

Maybe they should head back? Two members of their party were already unconscious, and a third was injured. It certainly wasn’t an auspicious start to the journey, which had only started a little over an hour previously. Well, they would carry on a little farther, and then turn back. They could probably avoid any complications on the way back if they hurried.

For the sake of making sure everyone got a bit of time out of their ball, Pip decided to bring Teak the tangel out for a bit as well. Teak immediately latched on to Pip once they were clear of their ball, but, after being forcefully untangled from Pip’s limbs, they were convinced to try exploring the beach a little bit on their own.

Pip kept a close eye on them, as this was their first time out in the wild since they smuggled themselves into Pip’s backpack. They still weren’t sure if Teak had intended to go home with them, or if they had simply stumbled into the pack by accident and been inadvertently kidnapped, but they had an alarmingly unaware nature that suggested the latter. Either way, Pip figured they needed a bit of extra minding.

This turned out to be correct. Pip took their eyes off the little tangel for a moment, in order to respond to something Chi-Chi had been doing, and when they looked back Teak was rummaging around in some washed up plantlife.

“What cha doing over here buddy?” Pip asked, as they came closer to investigate. The little tangel looked up at their trainer with their tendrils wrapped around something Pip couldn’t immediately recognize. Teak moved it around in front of it’s eye to get a better look and Pip realized it was a type of toxic sea plant! “Teak, drop that!”

Unfortunately the warning came a bit too late, and Teak had already absorbed a bit of the toxin from the plant. They dropped it, but a moment later they also dropped. Pip sighed and recalled the tangel. At least this they knew would wear off in a couple of hours. Poor little guy.

3You find a stolen pack tucked halfway into an old pokémon nest!Special Item--

Special Item
The players discover some special items that would be useful to them.

If the players discover difficult to reach items, one at a time players may choose a pokémon or a character to roll the indicated stats vs the event's difficulty in an attempt to reach or obtain them. If they fail, that pokémon or character loses 1 VIT for the remainder of the Expedition. Players may choose to pass their roll if desired.

Items are only obtained by players that succeed their roll. What item they get is determined by that player rolling 1-100 and checking the item chart.
