It started on a Monday, much like any other Monday, save for the mildly significant detail that, despite being squarely in the middle of the afternoon, the sky remained an inky, unbroken pitch black.

It hadn't rained in weeks, but it looked like today, of all days, was going to be the break of that equally unlucky streak.

The sky crackled ominously, a bright, warning flash skittering suddenly through the sullen clouds.

Just after the winds started to rage, blowing everything in its path away.

It had finally come, the storm we'd been desperately needing, except what began to pour down from the howling sky wasn't normal rain at all...

What began as a distant, echoing chorus of amphibians enjoying their favourite weather suddenly became something much more.

Strange things started falling from the sky and it wasn't just rain.

What were these, everyone out of the loop asked themselves as they hid in their homes, these small, colourful bits of interlocking plastic threatening to destroy their homes?

Happy frog noises began to turn to happy child noises, their small joyful voices slowly drowning out the concerns of their parents as they begged to be let outside to play...

But where had they come from, and were they - were they moving on their own?

And why did it look like they were piling up against the Jones' door across the street, Billy wondered, peering out the window.

hH In fact, it seemed like they were piling up against every door ... Hh

"When it hurts to look back, and your scared to look ahead,

They almost looked like jacks but yet they were thicker and different.

What seemed a hailstorm of colorful objects, however, was only the beginning as a deep rumbling from far off sounded.​

Then a sound like a giant's sneeze, and the colorful frogs and jacks stuck into siding on the houses.

Through the window, Billy watched with morbid curiosity as, in the ensuing draft, the Jones' door began to bow under an invisible weight, straining inward until the latch popped with a shudder of defeat and the bent door slammed inward.

Almost immediately the maelstrom of delight flooded the small home, its resistance pitiful at best; what would have been passersby and terrified neighbors alike could only watch from their besieged porches and battered windows beyond, the cacophony of horror that rang out from beneath the rainbow rubble growing steadily silent against the distant roar still growing nearer with every moment.

Suddenly; the roaring stopped and the ensuing silence was deafening; seconds ticked by in eerie emptiness until with a clamoring crash that shook windows, set homes vibrating, trees threatening to topple, cracks splitting the very earth, a great noise with no name rang out and the black of the sky suddenly turned a blindingly bright sickly green as the storm began to twist and writhe.

Just like that the girl, drenched in the sweat of a fever's nightmare, woke with a startled gasp; the phone beside her bed still lit and rattled with the shrill siren of her alarm.
