Character Overview:
Daryn is a brat who comes from power and it shows. While his time in the Galar circuit with his self-declared boyfriend definitely toned him down a good bit, he's still rather abrasive at first blush to many. He's highly competitive, loud-mouthed, opinionated, and often crass, not to mention disrespectful to anyone that hasn't earned his affection. He's exceptionally loyal to those who have, but with so many people in his history having sucked up to him to try and impress his father, he's often cynical and distrustful of those who attempt to get into his good graces too easily.
Five Likes:
- Pokémon battling/training.
- Being out in the wilderness/camping/exploring.
- Clothes that cost more than some people make in a month.
- Louis Morel. Like. A lot.
- Cooking curries and barbeques.
Five Dislikes:
- Having people assume things about him because of his father.
- Losing.
- Winter and icy weather.
- Any sort of formal occasion (i.e., suit-and-tie, "stuffy" events).
- Heights, and is mildly acrophobic!
Hobbies:
- Training - yes, really, he actively enjoys it and participates with his pokémon to the best of his abilities both for experience and fun!
- Shopping - the lack of stores on Nauwill sucks and his dad isn't going to hear the end of it til there's a mall.
- Reading cookbooks - privately and on his phone, because for some reason that hobby is embarrassing.
- Journaling - another 'secret' hobby, he actually keeps quite a thorough journal of his days, also on his phone.
Three Strengths:
Driven
When Daryn wants to do something, he's going to do it. He's incredibly driven to anything he puts his mind to, to the point of being stubborn and sometimes dumb about it. This drive has kept him going even when he perhaps shouldn't have, though, and while it has gotten him in trouble from time to time, it shows off in his performance. His attitude tends to rub off on his pokémon, and his enthusiasm pushes his partners to tackle challenges head on.
Loyal
To close friends and family, Daryn's loyalty is unwavering. Once he's decided someone is "his people," he'll do whatever he can to make sure they're safe and taken care of. This even extends to those he might be having an odd time with - leading to weird situations such as him telling his father to fuck off followed by immediately punching someone else in the face for saying the same thing.
Undaunted
Daryn doesn't care if something looks too hard or sounds difficult; he doesn't care if the numbers are against him even in the most obvious ways. He's the sort that would gamble with 1% chance if the only other alternative is failure, because you never know what might happen if you don't try. This doesn't mean he's fearless of course - he's been spooked plenty of times in his life - it simply means he's willing to tackle challenges no matter how impossible they might seem.
Three Flaws:Defensive
Daryn doesn't like being wrong and he doesn't like talking about faults. He's quick to snap back and defend himself, often to the point of being hostile, if someone comes down on him about something. He can accept criticism, but unless the person giving it is someone he already trusts deeply, he's likely to react badly and only think about it honestly later in private.
Impulsive
Look, planning and thinking things through is for everyone else; for Daryn, he just likes to do. If something seems interesting, he'll want to investigate it; if something seems fun, he'll want to try it. This, more often than not, gets him in more trouble than it's worth, and while his impulsiveness has technically led him to his best friends, it's also nearly gotten him killed more than once, even at his young age.
Cynical
Everyone has a motivation, even if they're not showing it yet - this is a core tenet that Daryn has grown up believing, and unfortunately, he's been proven right enough times for it to be ingrained in his brain. While he does understand there are good people who just want to do good things, his experience with toadies and leeches trying to shmooze with his father has made him suspicious of others and their motivations at best. He rarely tries to assume the best of people, instead needing to see real proof of their intentions before he accepts them as genuine.
History:
Daryn was born in Galar, and he stayed there apart from occasional travels with his father and mother until he reached adulthood. From there, he ... stayed in Galar, where he did time in the pokémon circuit, rejecting his father's expectations that he would grow into taking over his company one day. Despite his repeated protests, Junpei still very much has faith that the boy will come around - particularly with how much he likes to spend his money - so he's tolerated the experience. After exiting the circuit, he's now come to Nauwill, but definitely not because his dad wanted him to. Anything else isn't anyone's business but those close to him.
