Character Name: Rocío “Choco Rocco” Cotier

Pronoun Choice: She/her

Age: 18

Home Region: Paldea, up the hill from Cortondo

Character Overview:
Rocío is a gangly human girl from Cortondo with an affinity for mechanical things. Nauwill is what she expects to be the latest chapter in her life, training and battling pokémon. But she isn’t there just to play, she expects to work hard helping build the settlement and fixing what may be broken in the process. She is bright-eyed and optimistic about the future and looks forward to meeting some great people, too.

Five Likes:
  • Chocolate! Especially dark chocolate. She is known for having it on hand and has gained the nickname Chocco Rocco for it.
  • Pokémon of all kinds (especially ones that can fly or levitate).
  • Working with pokémon, whether it is to complete a project or just spending time with them.
  • Sturdy but comfortable clothing.
  • Limes and olives.
Five Dislikes:
  • “You’re too young.” Restrictions (rules) based on discrimination (especially age, gender & disability). For this reason sometimes she hates on authority figures.
  • Weakness from illness (and other things). She suffers from chronic illness and the effects are beyond her control. She hates being unable to do something for these reasons.
  • Financial insecurity (being broke). She is usually pretty good about keeping money on hand.
  • Poaching. Doesn’t mean she wouldn’t steal a loaf of bread or an egg if she was starving, but she still wouldn’t like it.
  • Rude people. She will call them out, especially if they are needlessly rough or aggressive.

Hobbies:

Fixing and building things, especially mechanical things, and of those, watches are her favorite. She has even begun to think of gears and miscellaneous metal parts as potential art pieces. So she will be exploring that. She has appropriately sized tools and a monocle for these tiny tasks. She loves learning how things work by taking them apart, or watching someone else show her the parts and workings. So, in a way, her hobbies include being a student.

Three Strengths:

  • Morally upright. She has strong values that she upholds in her deeds, not just talk. She is stubborn about it and she doesn’t care that you think so. You can try to bribe her, but she will not budge. *see flaw, “Stubborn.”
  • A good listener. She is used to being tired-- too tired, and was always listening to people rant and complain back home. But she has also learned that being trustworthy and a good listener will help people out immensely. They will confide in her and feel better for it, so even if she can’t do something more for them, she has indeed done something important.
  • Animal magnetism. She is able to interact with wild pokémon on neutral terms. So when one is usually aggressive, it may still act the alpha around her but it will not attack her first. In domestic pokémon she is able to get a grasp on their needs and what they’re saying a little better than most people can. For example, one that is too tired can help her understand that it needs a break.

Three Flaws:
  • Generally has hard luck, or bad things seem to happen at a bad time. It has happened more often than she can write off to mere coincidence. Perhaps she is simply a downer, or superstitious, though. She calls it a family curse.
  • Stubborn. She will dig her heels in at something she has decided upon. She will not change her mind, unless in certain instances where chocolate is involved. She may be swayed in the chocolate’s favor. However, if it interferes with her moral code, she absolutely will not be bribed. All of this sounds good but the flaw lies where she refuses to change her mind at all, even if she is wrong.
  • Sickly. She has the mind of someone who will never stop fighting, yet her illness drags her down. She hates that she has to stop working, or even recreating because of it. She wants to be as energetic as everyone else, but she cannot. There are strength-related things she wants to perform but she can’t, not like everyone else can. Sometimes she lets it get her down and she will have to stop for the rest of the day in sullen silence.

History:

Growing up on a small plot of land nestled in the mountains, Rocío’s family are olive farmers with a little key lime tree growing in the front yard. She always wanted a pokémon of her own, but in her family, they've always been used in farming only. Much like a tool or machine, if they didn't have a purpose, they didn't have a place on the farm. There was no room in her life for recreational sports enjoyed by pokémon trainers and most normal children alike. That is, unless she were to strike out on her own.

First, though, she needed a job. Her family was poor and her sister, who supported Rocío’s dreams in spirit, was unable to do much more for her journey than pack her a hearty lunch. Rocío traveled down from the foothills to the town of Cortondo. She started out as an olive tree picker, then later found a mechanic in town looking for an apprentice, after breaking his leg in an accident. They hit it off and she was able to rent a loft above his garage. It was little more than a bed on a platform above his garage, but it was all she needed. She spent as much time as she could tinkering with gadgets and broken watches (a side business). That was almost ten years ago after which she thought she could make it as a pokémon trainer.

Armed with her sister’s stories of a grandmother who adventured along with pokémon of her own, Rocío aims to do the very same thing, making a name for herself on the island region of Nauwill. The small Doveport is in need of a mechanic. So, that’s where she will start... as a mechanic... who adventures on the weekend... yes.

from “Everyone Welcome the NRC” game/event...
(it looked like fun)

FAVORITE
Pokémon Types: Steel, Flying, Psychic
Color: Green, pink
Foods: Olives or lime on anything, Spanish food, ices (like slushies, sorbet, etc.)
Thing to Drink: Soda
Music Genres: Folk music, pop music
Movie Genres: Adventure, fantasy
Show Genres: What was that one show from, uh... ten years ago. Hm. Retro?
Things to Do On a Weekend: Adventuring out in the wild
Type of Shoes: Hiking boots
Place to Nap: In her chair (drooling on someone’s disassembled watch).

LEAST FAVORITE
Pokémon Types: They’re all nice, but if she had to choose: Bug, Normal, Ice
Color: Black
Foods: Baker’s chocolate, cranberries, parsnips, daikon radishes. Bitter foods, unless tempered with something sweet or savory, gives her a strong negative response. Worse still is gritty textured food or that which is gruel-like in consistency. She will gag at the very least.
Thing to Drink: Black coffee
Music Genres: Metal, especially thrash and speed metal.
Movie Genres: Romance, it makes her uncomfortable.
Show Genres: Sitcom. “These people are so rude!”
Things to Do On a Weekend: Grocery shopping.
Type of Shoes: Pumps
Place to Nap: On the ground.

DO THEY ...
Have a favorite pokémon?: The one her sister Yaya (Eulalla) is sending through quarantine. (It’s a complete surprise!)
Remember any of their childhood dreams?: Adventure! Baseball! Pokémon champion! FLYING!!!
Have any ambitions for the future?: Champion in Nauwill sounds great.
Have any phobias or irrational fears?: Okay, bugs kind of creep her out, but she won’t say so.
Have a secret food, toy, smell, or item that brings them comfort when they encounter it?: Spanish rice; no; lime, olive, chocolate chip cookies, lavender; her toolbox and her watch tool kit

HAVE THEY EVER ...
Flown on a plane or a large pokémon?: No, but she has always dreamed of flying. She wants to ride on a pokémon over riding in a plane.
Ridden on a train?: When she was little, she remembers riding on a train with her mother, to see an elderly family member. A grandmother or aunt. This happened several times, but then they stopped without another word about it. Today she believes the family member must have passed away, but she isn’t sure.
Listened to an orchestral concert?: No, but that would be awe-inspiring, wouldn’t it?
Gone swimming in the ocean?: No.
Had a near death experience?: She has fallen out of trees on several occasions. The doctor warned her away from climbing them without assistance (but what young person would listen?).
Had a significant other?: Uh, no...
Lost a friend or loved one?: No. Maybe.
Tried caramel popcorn?: Once there was a carnival and her sister Yaya insisted that she try some. She is very glad she did, though at the time she wished they had had their own bags. (It was “expensive.” )
Practiced a craft or visual art?: Just the tinkering. She has thought of using old gears and pieces to make (steampunk) art.
Learned to play an instrument?: No, she wants to learn the guitar, though.
Caught a wild pokémon?: Sooooooon.
Released a pokémon?: Yes. Every pokémon she ever caught she was forced to release immediately. It was always disappointing and made her sad for days afterward.

IN-DEPTH

Personality Overview: Rocco is a tough girl but her heart is gentle. She does not abuse or use others just for her own gain. She wants to know their needs to help make their relationship, however brief, to work well. She wants to be a Psychic- and Steel- type pokémon expert to help her grow her mechanical business.

Something Positive: She feels good about going out on her own. She has found a profession that she enjoys and that, wherever she might go, she will be able to find work. Everyone needs a mechanic at some point.

Something Negative: Her chronic illness keeps her in bed some days out of every week. She hates that she is so weak. She is sickly and she looks sickly. But on the days she feels good, she tries hard to make up for what time was lost. She usually overdoes it, though, and will end up right back in bed for the next couple of days. It’s a bitter cycle.

I am so sorry that my back injury and subsequent recovery made it take so long to get this done but you are approved! (Also, cute dollmakers, hehe.)
