“Hehehe, is it that obvious?” Pip asked in response to Tori’s question about catching pokemon. “I caught some pokemon in research balls over in Newbreeze, but this is the first pokemon I’ve ever caught for myself. I used to train pokemon for a living – water types, specifically, but this is my first time… having my own.” They trail off a bit at the end, smiling affectionately at Mezzo he had floated back over to them to show off the new berry that had been given by Tori.

They nodded in agreement to Tori’s assessment of the bird type pokemon’s habits and made a mental note to come back to this area if they got a chance. Pip was about to speculate on what kind of bird it might be, when their attention was caught by something weird in the water. The light was weird. The sunlight streaming through the trees had an odd dappling effect on the surface, but the way the light was moving wasn’t the same as it was along most parts of the river.

Cautiously, Pip moved a bit closer to the bank to have a better look. There were, distinctly, lights moving beneath the water! If one looked carefully, they could just see the slightly darker shapes of round bodies between the lights. Chinchou! They looked like normal chinchou to Pip, but it was hard to make it out through the rushing water. It would also be hard to throw a pokeball at them while they were below the surface, but this was a situation they had actually been preparing for with Little Guy!

They motioned for Tori to come over and pointed out the pokemon in the water. “It looks like chinchou, but I can’t quite tell if their normal or another native variation.” Pip took Little Guy’s ball and summoned him by their feet, quickly giving him the command to stay so that he didn’t jump into the water before the trainers were ready. “I’ll have Little Guy slip in and go below them, to try and herd them to the surface. Do you have a pokeball?”

Pip had Little Guy move into position a bit farther down the bank, and got their own Research Ball ready. He had spotted the other pokemon and was waiting excitedly for Pip’s signal. “Be careful Little Guy, these guys are probably electric types. Go below and herd them upwards, but don’t get too close. Come straight back if any try to fight you!” Chinchou, in Pip’s experience, tended towards flight rather than fight, but there were always exceptions.

When Tori was also ready, they gave Little Guy the release command, and he jumped into the water with barely a splash. Pip tracked the regional totodile’s shadow through the water and was very pleased when he executed his job exactly as asked. This was their first time doing something like this in a live situation with Little Guy, and they couldn’t have asked for a better performance!

Moments after Little Guy dropped into the water, there was a flurry of movement from the lights as the small group of chinchou were startled by the predatory water type. Little bulbous bodies with dangling antenna broke the surface, and it was easy enough for Pip and Tori to pick one to line up a shot on. Pip’s research ball clicked shut with a successful capture almost immediately. When Little Guy resurfaced, Pip signaled for him to retrieve the two balls from the water, so neither trainer had to jump in after them.

Pip turned back to Tori, pleased that their plan had worked. “That didn’t look like a research ball! Did you catch one of them for yourself?”

Success reveals feathers and claw marks indicate this area is a sleeping spot for some kind of avian pokemon.
Unusual Terrain2

Unusual terrain
The players discover an unusual feature of the area. Each player may roll one character's INS + Clever vs the event's difficulty. If at least one character succeeds, then the characters document enough information about the feature to help the researchers back at Doveport and gain +1 research at the end of the adventure. Any mention of success only reveals the sort of discovery it is for roleplay purposes.

2A section of the ground suddenly gives way, plunging you into a sink of soggy mud and broken leaf litter. Roll STR to escape (all trainers).Trainer Danger (Major)1

Trainer Danger
The players encounter a danger, whether terrain or pokémon based, which directly threatens one or more players.

If the event indicates all characters are in danger, roll the directed stats vs the event's difficulty for each character. If a character fails the roll, they lose 1 VIT for the remainder of the Expedition.

If the event indicates one character is in danger, players decide which character will be targeted; players may roll 1d20 with the lowest number being targeted if they don't want to decide themselves. That character rolls the directed stats vs the event's difficulty. If they fail, that character loses 1 VIT for the remainder of the Expedition.

If the event indicates major danger, then all characters must roll the directed stats vs the event's difficulty. If any character fails, all characters take 1 VIT of damage or the remainder of the Expedition. If half or more of the characters fail, the characters are instead collectively Knocked Out and must end the Expedition.

Tori filed away the knowledge that Pip trained water types before this to talk about later. As it was she started inspecting other trees in the area to see if any of them had been affected similarly. If it was just the one, it was probably just a single pokemon. If there were multiple in such a small area it was probably a family or group of them. The forest did a surprisingly good job muffling pokemon cries so she couldn't identify any by sound. Not that she knew that many bird pokemon cries by heart. Before she got too far in her search, Pip got her attention.

As soon as they directed it to the water, she was eagerly peering into it to see what pokemon it could be. She stifled her gasp when the softly flashing lights moved about. Chinchou! Between the water and the natural movement of the fish she also couldn't tell if they were something native to here or just regular chinchou.

Keeping her voice low, Tori agreed to Pip's plan. She cooed over how well trained Little Guy was and pulled out a net ball. Caspian was called close to not interfere with Little Guy's herding and Tori tracked one of the chinchou as it rose.

"Left!" she called which she was throwing at seconds before she launched it. The net ball whizzed through the air to solidly twack her chosen chinchou. The ding of a successful catch was the sweetest tone. Her first catch of the island and it was a water type! Giddy with joy she hugged herself and hald to stop herself from splashing into the water to get her ball from the river.

"Yeah, I picked up a couple balls for expeditions. I was really hoping to get one of the native water types." Tori was beaming as she accepted the poke ball from Pip. "Little Guy did such a good job, didn't you, you little cutie?" she desperately wanted to give the totodile a few pats but looked to Pip to make sure it would be alright.

As she looked, just past their shoulder she saw more of the claw marks and holes in yet another tree. "And look, either a family or group of that flying type pokemon must live in this area. There's more of the claw marks and more feathers scattered around." She wondered if there might be any younglings of whatever flying type around.

Pip nodded their approval for Tori to pet Little Guy, and the Nauwellian Totodile was more than enthusiastic to receive the attention! He nuzzled against her leg and started following around on her heels, probably in hope of receiving more attention and praise, completely ignoring his own trainer. Pip rolled their eyes at the little traitor, but didn’t see the harm in it so long as Tori didn’t mind. Little Guy propped his front legs up on the tree Tori to reach up as far as he could (which was not very far), to investigate alongside her… or, at least, mimic her behavior.

Pip rooted around in their bag while they moved towards where Tori had found the second nest. They had a notebook and a tape measure in there somewhere. Maybe they could take some measurements of the claw markings or-

Before they could find what they were looking for, they were reminded why the pair of them had been so careful about watching where they were stepping up until this point. Pip felt the ground start to give out under their foot, but they weren’t able to back pedal fast enough this time. They yelped in alarm as their leg was sucked into the sink hole, and their unprepared free leg gave out.

Something in the hole scraped painfully up against the side of their leg on the way in, and their knee had been jarred quite a bit. They slumped back on to their butt and carefully extracted their leg from the hole, taking towel out of their bag as soon as it was free in order to clear away the worst of the muck. Mezzo and Little Guy had both rushed over, and they were forced to use one hand to try and reassure the poor little things.

There was definitely some blood coming through the dirt. Great. It didn’t hurt particularly bad, and their knee only ached a little bit from the awkward way they fell. So they were probably fine in the long run, but this would probably spell the end of their expedition today.

Tori felt her heart melting at how adorable Little Guy was acting. Following her around and mimicking her was just too cute. She was glad that Pearl wasn't out, the alolan vulpix would not be pleased with another pokemon vying for her attention so much. She might be quiet about it but she'd make her opinion known regardless. A glance at Pip and she was reassured that they weren't offended by the totodile's actions at least.

Refocusing on the claw marks, Tori leaned in to take a closer look at some. Raising her voice to ask Pip something, she was cut off by Pip's distressed yelp. Whipping around, she immediately saw the problem: a weak spot in the earth that had gone unnoticed by either of them until Pip's leg had slid into the new sinkhole.

While Pip was carefully extracting themself from the hole, Tori pulled out her medkit and started gathering the things she'd need to help. She was careful to test the ground on her way to Pip's side, quick stepping away if any of it seemed to sink.

"How badly does it hurt?"
she asked. "Can I help?" Tori very badly wanted to just start assisting but it had been stressed to her that she needed consent before she could just jump in to do so. With Pip's assent, she finished clearing the mud from their leg so they could comfort their two pokemon. "This might hurt a bit," she warned before wiped it gently with alcohol wipes. The scrape was pretty gnarly looking but thankfully it was just long and not deep. Carefully adding a cream to help it heal faster, Tori bandaged it up the best she could. At this rate she was going to need to resupply her medkit with more of everything.

"So we could probably still continue, but I want to resupply my kit and you should probably stay off that leg for the rest of the day. Do you need me to help support your weight?"
Tori packed her supplies away before standing and offering Pip her hand. If they wanted help she'd prop herself under their arm and support their weight until they got back to wherever they were staying in town. Caspian could watch out for any pokemon that might try and intercept them along the way.

Pip sat patiently though the medical care, not particularly bothered by the sting of the alcohol wipes. This was not their first rodeo, and the wound really wasn’t that bad. Once it stopped bleeding it would probably scab up quickly, and it probably would fade in a couple of days. It would just be a bit annoying to bandage and clean every time they went in the water.

They accepted Tori’s hand to get back to their feet but they were a bit skeptical about her ability to support any of their weight. They were a solid foot taller than her, and deceptively heavy thanks to the muscle. Some tentative testing of their leg proved that it was still fully capable of supporting their own weight, so they wouldn’t need to put that to the test. Their knee was still aching a bit, but honestly their leg hurt less than it had when they’d stumbled into those stinging plants…

“I should be okay, but thank you.” Moving their own bag so that it was being supported by their good side, Pip nodded at Tori, and then started leading their party back down along the river, since their injured leg would need to set the pace. “Yeah, we’ve had a pretty good run today, probably best not to push our luck.”

Tori watched Pip briefly to make sure they really were ok to walk alone. After a few steps she took a few longer steps to catch back up, reassured that they weren't going to collapse along the way. "We have! I wonder what sort of flying type makes it's home here in this kind of creepy forest and the chinchou were a wonderful new find." Maybe it was a bit unfair to call it creepy, but between the abundance of bug pokemon, the dark that clung to the trees no matter what time of day it was and the eerie silence Tori felt it was a fair assessment.

"Would you want to go out again once your leg is a bit more healed up? We can take out our two new pokemon as well if they're ready!" Tori grinned brightly up at Pip, figuring the answer would probably be a yes and glad to have made a friend in them. She was more than happy to keep an eye on them and chat away as they made their way carefully back to Doveport.
