What is a Gatekeeper?
A Gatekeeper is a type of Mage that has the ability to operate a Gate - Lesser or Greater. The job of these Kitsu is to guard and operate the Gates, and to make sure any Token presented by a Kitsu wishing to travel is legitimate.
What is a Token?
A Token is an item that allows passage through a Gate. Each Gate has its own specific Token created for it. For Lesser Gates, the item itself is usually not magical, just made a certain way - for example, a piece of wood carved with a certain pattern would allow travel to a Lesser Gate that opens into a forest. There are fake Lesser Gate Tokens out there, but most Gatekeepers will not be fooled by them. Greater Gates have Tokens that have been infused with the energy of the Gate itself, and a Gatekeeper is able to sense this energy - making these Tokens nearly impossible to fake.
