Character Name: Benjamin "Benji" Dooley
Pronoun Choice: They/Him
Age: Nineteen
Home Region: Kanto
Personality Overview: Benji is a quiet, shy and reserved individual, preferring their presence to draw little attention from other people. They would much rather stick to the wall and watch the world around them than be overly involved, especially if it means being the talk of the town. For those few people, however, that actually get to know them, Benji can be quite clingy and overly invested. They will take a nose dive into learning what the other person loves so that they have something to talk about. They enjoy competition shows - having grown up in the life - much to the surprise of those who know them, given that they have been pressured all their life to actually compete in shows.
Five Likes: Milkshakes, Decora, Pop music, Cuddling, Sweaters
Five Dislikes: Attention, Soda, Being cold, Bananas, Canines
Hobbies: Candy making, People/Poke'mon watching, Binging reality/competition shows
Three Strengths:
- Eidetic memory: For brief periods of time, Benji can remember things as vividly as if they were experiencing them in real time.
- Logical: They are a quick and decisive thinker, with attention to detail that rivals some of the more keen eyed adults.
- Diligent: With everything they do, Benji is very attentive and thorough. Very little slows them down when they find something to research.
Three Weaknesses:
- Stage Fright: Being front and center, especially on a stage, is absolutely terrifying. They freeze up, can't speak or move, and will often times (should they be there long enough) grow sick. So far they haven't thrown up on stage, thankfully, and have gotten off in the nick of time.
- Clingy: When they grow attached to someone, Benji has a tendency to dive head first into learning everything they can about the person's hobbies and likes. They want to know everything they can in order to make sure they can hold conversations and the interest of the other person. This has driven off many friends...
- Emotionally Detached: Benji has an inability to connect properly with their own feelings, or that of others. Feelings are messy and can confuse and muddle thinking.
History:
- born into a contest family, the last of five kids
- always very soft spoken and behind the scenes kind of kid
- parents tried to breed them for contesting like the previous four kids, all of whom were growing very very well, but Benji just wasn't suited for it
- stage fright had hit them hard, leaving them curled up in a corner with anxiety attacks
- also didn't help when they started exhibiting vitiligo
- made them more unique and brought far too much attention to them
- withdrew further and further into their shell until they met Zak
- Zak didn't judge them on how they looked or the fact that they didn't do contests like their family
- Zak just accepted them for who they were, while gently nudging occasionally for them to do new things
- Benji did complete the proper schooling, and was actually a very good student, they just didn't (and still don't) like being the center of attention
- Benji received their first Poke'mon from Zak about a year before Nauwill was discovered and the pair came out to explore
- Zak managed to convince Benji to follow him on an adventure and to get away from their family
- Thalassophobia: is absolutely terrified of large bodies of water, one of the biggest reasons they've never explored anywhere, but they were talked through it by Zak, as well as being kept inside the ship to Nauwill and not seeing out any windows or over the railing
