Story: Hush now, little foal, quiet - do you hear that? Through the sounds of the wind, listen closely. Is that the sound of a pony crying? Keep your eyes on the trees around you, for in these woods, if you're not careful, then you very well may be swept up by the Ice Mare, never to be seen again.

This legend begins with a mare. A beautiful, winter unicorn with warm golden eyes and fur the shade of freshly fallen snow. She lived in Winterbloom, though back in those days it was far from the bustling city we know it to be now. No, indeed, back then it was merely a hoof-full of shops and cottages. Now, our lovely mare had a lovely mate - a sure-hoofed earth pony, with a mane as silver as the Silver Sea itself. Their mate worked as a guide, leading towns folk through the Glittering Forest, an untamed wilderness at the time of our tale.

Her mate would often go out in the daylight hours, guiding the uncertain through carefully traversed forest paths or clearing trails yetto be used. But winter-aligned ponies can still get taken over by the cold, especially when Wynter takes over from Falryn. It was during a day recently following the seasonal switchover, that a blizzard hit the town of Winterbloom, snowing many ponies inside of their homes. Our mare worried fiercely for her partner who had yet to return and it was rapidly growing dark outside. Finally, her nerves overtook her and while she was certainly no mountaineer nor guide like her mate, she wrapped a winter cloak around her shoulders and pressed into the fluffy outside. She used her magic to light her way, but the snow fell in thick sheets, so only a small golden glow emanated from her horn.

Far into the blizzard she pressed, crossing into the Glittering Forest. She called for her mate until her voice became hoarse and rasping. Just when she was beginning to lose hope, she saw a clump of silver hair, tangled in a low hanging branch. She hurried towards it and knew it to be the mane of her lover. Only... they were no where in sight! She looked around frantically and tripped over her hooves in the process. Landing in the snow, it was there that she recognized her mate's hoof print, though it looked like they'd stumbled. She followed the trail over a slope and found that it led... directly into the Rushing River.

Her breath caught and her blood ran cold. It couldn't be, not her sure-footed, guardian spirit? Surely this must be a mistake - she... she couldn't believe it. And indeed, she refused to believe it. So, she turned around, ignoring the obvious signs of her mate's unfortunate fate and continued into the Glittering Forest, crying her grief and calling for her mate to finally return to her side. She wandered forever, her heart and body encasing itself in ice - even her eyes frosted shut. It's said that she continues to roam the Glittering Forest, stealing away whoever she might find, in hopes of the unseen stranger turning out to be her gallant mate, ready to guide her out of the woods and into the light.

What was that?! I could've sworn I saw a lantern flickering in the distance... Or maybe it was the golden light of the Ice Mare's horn, glowing ever closer. Oh, don't look so scared, I'm just teasing you. Come on, let's get you home. It's getting dark and I think we both know better than to stay in these parts past sundown.

Story: The book shifted in his grip while Azar considered not reading to his daughter. He realized Teal had grabbed the book by mistake but it didn’t seem too bad after reading the little blurb in the back. “Don’t tell your mother Rue but we’re going to read a story a little off.“ He looked into the basket pretty sure the foal was already asleep so he was pretty safe he figured why not? He flipped back to the front of the book and started the tale keeping his voice soft as he read aloud so he could tell his wife he had read to their child while also not waking up the child who feel asleep as soon as she was set in a nice warm dark room.

The wind whispered softly carrying the wishes of good children through the air. The season’s of gifts and merriment was in full swing in the little town of Forlu. It was a small town full of lovely and wonderful ponies who knew the joys of sharing and caring. They decorated their homes with warm lights and kept their hearths running with crackles and sweet woodland smells all over their homes as soon as the first snows of the season touched the ground. One little Pegasus foal named Jemma was very excited helping her mother bake cookies to set out for the night. She had been a good foal all year long and just like last year her mother had let her open one really small gift early each day until the big day itself where she would be allowed to open her ‘big’ gift. It had been a tradition for two years now since she was a big enough girl to help wrap and set up for the holiday. The day flew by quickly baking cookies and decorating the whole house. She was tired and yawning by the time she got back to her room finding not one but two small gifts on her bed. Momma must have been extra proud of how good she had been that day wrapping all the cookies in snowman and santa wrap for a party at their neighbors tomorrow. Jemma looked over the presents with pride and picked up a pink sparkling one shaking it slightly hearing a soft thump in the box. The other box was smaller and seemed like it had been dropped once so it must have been from dad. She set it down and did the same with the other slightly smaller green box hearing a small thump from that one as well. Brimming with curiosity she could no longer contain she picked the pink box back up and ripped it to shreds. She might be a ‘big’ girl but even ‘big’ girls could open up boxes messily. She almost squealed in delight it was a small teddy bear that had the same kind of pajamas she had! It was so cute and perfect she knew her momma must have had a hard time finding the cutest teddy bear in the whole world! She picked up the smaller box and opened it up quickly still looking at her teddy bear. She blinked and touched the bottom of the box once she had opened it. It was empty. She was sure that she had heard a thump shaking it earlier though. She shook her head and tossed the empty box to the side. It was likely her dad’s idea of a joke and her mom went along with it. She rolled her eyes smiling imagining her dad asking if she enjoyed his gift of boundless love or something corny the next day. Snuggling her teddy bear she tossed the remains of the wrapping paper and boxes in the trash and went to bed like a good girl. That night Jemma’s parents head small scratching around the home and smiled to themselves thinking it was their daughter playing with her new teddy bear or perhaps looking at the other gifts under the tree trying to imagine what they were without opening them. The pair went to sleep and briefly woke up when there was a sharp pain to the back of the neck and then sighed and the eyes remained open but there was nothing left inside.

The constable had been called to the home the next day when a neighbor had gone over to pick up cookies for a party and discovered the scene. He shook his head in horror after leaving the home. There was a picture perfect home with cookies even wrapped in packages to take to a party that was supposed to happen today yet in the middle of the living room area there was a mess like nothing else he had ever seen in all his years. The family had been killed and stuffed in macabre poses as though decorating the tree. The youngest child had her feathers painted like a bird of some kind and was in her pajamas with a cute pear necklace. It was a twisted joke of a scene that had made even the experienced constable ill to see. He was grateful to be on his way home. When opening the door to his own home on break he noticed his husband darting about and handing him some tea to help the constable wind down for the day. There would be guards from the seasonal court to arrive tomorrow to deal with the murder. Looking at his own Christmas tree he shivered looking at all the gifts so perfectly wrapped and sitting waiting for the holiday he chuckled noticing a smaller green gift that had a crumpled corner like his husband must have dropped it on accident while bringing it in. it was cute and made him feel warm knowing his husband was trying so hard for the holidays. Moving the kitchen he heard his kids come home form sledging out back as he nuzzled his husband complimenting him on taming the holiday already with only eleven days left until the big day. His husband suggested letting the kids grab a random gift to open and play with early tonight to celebrate. The constable nodded figuring it couldn’t hurt. The kids each grabbed a gift and ran upstairs to open and play with them. Soon enough there was thumps upstairs as the foals were playing with a ball in the house. He groaned grateful only one of the gifts was a ball. He had no idea what the other was but assumed it was a book or something moderately educational based on the kids playing with the ball. Curling up he noticed his kids had grabbed the green gift form before as it wasn’t there and chuckled glad it hadn’t been mocked as that would hurt his husband’s pride and all his hard work. The family headed to bed that night as they did every night. The horror scene form the other home was still in the constable’s mind and he just prayed he wouldn’t have any nightmares that night while he heard his boys fumbling around in their room still up when they should be sleeping. Rolling over he hugged his husband finally drifted off to sleep. There was a sharp pain jolting him awake but he couldn’t move as darkness ate him slowly. He could swear he head something humming the twelve days of Christmas as darkness claimed him completely.

Follow the next story in the gift of murder book two Two Turtle Doves."

Azar closed the book and judging form the lack of motion Rue was still out. He was never going to read this to her while she was awake. Still he might have to pick up the other books in this series because he had so many questions. Was there a ghost or was it a murder? he hated stories that didn't give more clues as to what it was. Sighing he knew he would have to tell Teal tale about her mistake with the book choice. He stood up and headed out carrying the book with him glad Rue wasn't old enough to read on her own yet.

I have to say, both of these Stories were lovely, while none was sad and haunting the other happened to give me chills down my spine.
