This thread used for Amateur rank for Fei Lang.

Trainer: Fei Lang
Project: Task: #01 - Meet the Locals
Assignment: Assignment 3: Study a Nauwillian Torchic
Requirement Proof: N. Torchic

Options Chosen: diet + temperment

DietIns + Nature2... torchics seem happy to eat most things, but it seems that seedy berries are its favored diet.

TemperamentClever + Etiquette2... these pokémon are extremely high energy, and they require a good amount of stimulation to keep them happy. They get bored quickly.

Lang set down the newly hatched torchic on his bed and rummaged through his things to pull out a notebook and pencil. Flyers posted outside the URA building and announcements on the website all indicated that they wanted research on the three starters that they were handing out. Lang personally didn't see why they hadn't done these sort of things before they started handing out the pokemon, but they were giving out funds to any who participated. It was a good chance to both learn about his new pokemon and get funds to help pay for anything he might need in the future.

Double checking the website, Lang wrote down the two things he thought he'd have the easiest time figuring out and would be the most useful: Diet and Temperament. The pair at the enrichment center had given him some food to provide for the torchic and some basic care instructions, but Lang was sure that the baby would have preferences.

Some quick searches on the internet and a visit to the nearby cafeteria and Lang was set up with a small array of foods. Since the torchic had just hatched, it probably woulnd't have too much of an appetite? At least, that was what Lang was figuring. He'd never been around a baby baby pokemon like this before. But the faster this was done, the faster he could get everything written up and turned in for funds.

Freshly hatched, torchic seemed to be pretty sleepy and kept dozing off as he attempted to feed it. It ate just about everything edible he gave it. Meat, vegetables, berries, nuts, far more than he anticipated it consuming. It seemed the most excited over the seedy berries he had and kept trying to go back for more of them when he offered her something else.

By the time he was done testing what torchic would eat, she was as round as could be and everything was gone. She'd tried to eat nearly double of the seedy berries that she had of anything else so it was a safe bet that that was her favored diet. Noting that down, Lang watched as torchic settled herself into bed and promptly dozed off.

There was no way to test for anything else until she woke, so he took the time to write out everything for diet.

Torchic consumes whatever is provided happily, but has a severe preference for seeded berries. Samples of meats, vegetables, fish, berries, and nuts were provided upon first acquiring. Subject consumed all of the provided samples but kept trying to find more of the seeded berries. Further tests shall be provided to verify the preference.
With the first studies done, Lang tucked away both the notes and the final draft for that on the off chance that Torchic was a destructive kind of pokemon. Based on her current behavior though, she was a sweet kind of pokemon and would be simple to care for. Lang went to sleep with a smile, glad that his first pokemon wasn't going to be a terrible choice.

Question: What sort of temperament does Torchic possess?
Observations: Torchic sleeps heavily and seems content to stay on the bed.
Hypothesis: Torchic is a low energy pokemon and ideal for beginning trainers. Should be easy to train and keep content for long periods of time
Lang started the next day with laying out some questions and his hypothesis. While he'd woken early thanks to having something else in the bed with him, Lang had had most of the evening with her the previous day. He was confident that he could handle this. While he waited for his new pokemon to wake up, he wrote out his thoughts and then went to the cafeteria to get the two of them some breakfast. He got the same variety of foods he'd picked up last night, intent on repeating the experiment. He had to make sure that it wasn't just a one off thing that there was a preference.

Whether it was the scent of food or the noise Lang coming into the room made, Torchic started to stir at his arrival. "Good morning my sleepy torchic," he gently greeted her, aware that she was still waking. He set his own plate up on the table and then started gently setting the small plates of various foods on the ground for her to pick from. She gave him a sleepy peep as he picked her up and set her on the floor, blinking a few times. He gestured to the food and then sat at the desk with his own plate to watch her.

"Eat whatever you like," he told her even knowing she wouldn't understand. It seemed torchic got the message either way. After sitting up and fluffing her feathers, she made her way over to the plates. Torchic made a beeline to the berries and devoured them first. Based on the happy noises she was making, Lang determined that yup, the seeded berries were her favorite. Once they were gone, there was a sad sort of peep and then torchic turned to the rest of the foods. Since he hadn't wanted to overload her again, there were small amounts of everything. It was enough to make a full meal, as evidenced by torchic making her way through every plate and eating everything on it. Lang finished his plate just in time as she turned to him and hopped up on his lap to see what he was eating.

Now that she seemed more awake, Lang took the time to give her a proper look over. Bright eyes, fluffy feathers, slightly cool to the touch, she was really nice to cuddle with with the weather being what it was. Going off his hypothesis, Lang set her back on the bed and waited to see if she'd start to take a nap as he cleaned up after the both of them.

To his immense surprise, Torchic instead immediately hopped back off the bed and started chasing after his shadow only to be distracted with whatever was under the desk. She popped back out and fluttered up to his desk chair and from there to the desk itself. By the time Lang had picked everything up, she'd circled the entirety of the room a couple times and looked to be doing it a third.

That was far different from the previous night. Maybe it was just the influx of energy from eating? Lang hoped so. If she was this active all the time then he'd have to find some way to get rid of the excess energy. Lang slipped out of the room while Torchic was investigating the things he had under the bed. After this, he should probably take her outside to get some playtime in. Maybe then she'd calm down some and they could relax back in the bedroom.

It was a simple enough task to get back into his room and from there scoop up Torchic and carry her outside. She didn't fight his grasp, nor did she complain. Instead she peeped and looked around with interest. Lang wasn't sure entirely where to have their 'experiments' so after heading outside, he just found the nearest open space and set her down. Torchic was delighted.

She darted about to and fro, rustling around in the foliage around the dorms, digging into the dirt, startling anyone walking by. Each different thing took up all of Torchic's attention, but then they would lose interest pretty quickly and move on to the next thing. Lang was dismayed at this. Especially the longer it went on. It was looking more and more like his initial hypothesis was incorrect.

Much of the day was spent with Lang taking Torchic various different places for her to explore and her getting into everything there. Once she'd exhausted all the various different activities in an area, Lang would pick her up and relocate. He had brought a notebook and so was able to take notes about it. Occasionally he was able to get her to stay still long enough to give her a good brushing to keep the worst of the dirt off her, but by the end of the day she was a mess.

There were several meals where Lang tried out various foods. Since she'd eaten everything at breakfast, he tried only about half the variety for lunch, including the seeded berries. Torchic once more seemed happiest about them, but didn't seem to miss out of the other things that he'd provided. Seemed she was just happy to get fed. At dinner he'd try out the other half of things and see if there was a difference. Maybe tomorrow he'd see about not including the berries for one meal, or just having only berries as another. That should be enough tests to verify her diet.

With trepidation, Lang decided that if she was going to sleep in his bed again, she was going to need to get bathed. Online searches indicated that this was going to be a tough thing to do and Lang stripped down to the least amount of clothes to keep from anything being ruined.

Torchic partially proved the stories true. She was very against getting into the bath, but then once she was in, she was just as against getting out of it. Both Lang and the bathroom ended up soaked but Torchic was clean so he took it as a win. Maybe tomorrow he'd try to keep her indoors?

Torchic fell asleep in his arms on the way back to his dorm so he settled her back into the little semi-nest he'd crafted the previous day. As much as he wanted to Lang had to stay awake long enough to document his discoveries.

The next morning Lang woke far later than he had been the past handful of days since arriving in Nauwill. He scrambled to get up and out of bed and hurry to the cafeteria to get the both of them something to eat, not really noticing Torchic was already up and trying to entertain herself. She didn't manage to get out the door but it was a near thing and Lang missed it entirely.

When he came back with the plates of food for the both of them, he was pleasantly surprised to see her just sitting in the middle of the floor and waiting for him. She peeped innocently and fluffed her neck feathers out before hopping over to his feet. Chuckling softy, Lang set up her plates, his own neatly deposited on the desk for when he was done.

This meal was going to be one without berries, and Torchic noticeably deflated when she realized there weren't any. She ate everything provided, but sadly peeped at him as if to ask for the beloved berries. Lang felt bad, and quickly inhaled his own breakfast so that he could take her out of the room and hopefully get her mind off of it. This was a necessary step in the experiment process! At least, that was what he told himself anyway.

As was becoming habit, Lang collected the dirty dishware to bring back to the cafeteria before collecting Torchic and bringing her somewhere new. The town was small and new enough that it would only take a day, maybe two before they had explored everything that was considered in town. Lang could start taking her out to explore to get some energy out that way.

Today would be focused on places indoors. Such as the small building provided to the enrichment center. There were a couple rooms available to arrange playdates in and Lang borrowed one with permission to let Torchic roam around. There were some small things for her to play with, and slightly larger equipment for her to play on, and thankfully that managed to distract her enough that they spent a good half the day there. It didn't seem to tire her out, but she acted happy enough. Lang used whatever toys they had set aside for this to keep Torchic stimulated. He often had to switch up what he was doing or using to keep her attention. She got bored pretty fast with whatever he was using.

Lunch had the variety that she'd gotten the first day, and Torchic was pleased about the return of the berries. Gorging herself on everything available, she settled in for a brief nap on Lang while he wrote more notes and started getting everything set up for his final draft. These past few days of getting used to his new pokemon and learning about her had taught him a lot. Part of what he'd learned was that he was going to have to invest in some toys or another friend or something for torchic. As much as he liked her, he couldn't spent the entirety of his every day just playing with her. She had so much energy. Maybe someone at the enrichment center would have some good ideas for things he could use? Or maybe Lan would have some good ideas?

Running his hands through his hair a handful of times, Lang sat back and thought about it. They'd been inside the store and he hadn't seen anything that could be useful as a toy. Maybe one of the other trainers could craft something? Then again, Lang wasn't entirely sure what all would be a good toy for torchic specifically. The couple that were at the enrichment center had worked for a short time, but he didn't have anything similar and he didn't know where he could get something like that.

Before he could get too deep into his thoughts, Lang was brought out of it by torchic waking back up. A glance at the clock said she'd only been down for maybe fifteen minutes. Lang tucked his notes back into the folder he was keeping them in and then picked up his notebook and Torchic and made his way back out into town. Before the nap they'd been exploring some of the freshly constructed buildings that weren't quite inhabited yet. He was making sure that torchic wasn't making any mess near them, but it was definitely something she was interested in. Something about the freshly cut wood maybe? Or just the buildings themselves since Lang wasn't letting her inside them? Lang wasn't 100% sure where the enthusiasm was coming from, but it was a way to burn off some of her energy.

By the end of the night Lang was running ragged. Torchic had so much energy. That's it, tomorrow they would go out and explore. Tonight, it was time for a second bath and then bed. Their dinner was slightly later than he would have liked, but Torchic went full ham on the tray of nothing but seeded berries he brought her. By the end of it she was covered in small bits of seeds and berries. It was much easier to bathe her the second night, not nearly as much water got outside the bath, and by the time he was walking her back to the room she was passed out in his arms again.

After getting her set up in her nest, Lang sat himself at his desk to finish writing up the final details for his research. Tomorrow they'd turn that in and then head to the Newbreeze Grasslands just outside of town to do some exploring. Even if nothing came of it, it would be somewhere new to see and Torchic could start doing some battles to get stronger. Lang, for the first time since he had arrived, felt hopeful at what the future would bring.
