Lan was on a mission to find a nerd. He had seen what had appeared to be a perfect specimen around here somewhere. Ahhah! He turned sharply on heel, sauntering to Wynmond and plopped his bulbasaur into the man's lap. "Help me with research," he demanded, grinning sharply as Christmas gave a cheerful 'Saaau' from her seat in the strangers lap.

Wynmond was on a mission to relax after his rather tiring day doing absolutely nothing. Look, there was brooding to be done and worries to fret. Wynmond had spent the entire day with Barker, pondering when the right time was to begin heading outside the city. Barker was fairly new to the world and recently hatched, but he was eager and so was Wynmond. Lucille had assured him that pokemon did just fine beginning training right after hatching, and while Wynmond trusted the enrichment center worker he also didn't trust himself.

Would he be good enough of a trainer to ensure this new life would be safe and happy? Or would he be a disaster waiting to happen, leading everyone who had faith in him to disappointment? No- he had come here specifically because no one cared what he was up to, so really he only had himself and Barker to let down.

See? The fretting was exhausting in itself, and Wynmond had found himself slouched into the bench near the living quarters for trainers like himself, hands slowly slipping through his hair in a form of self-comfort. Barker was in their pokeball; a usual fact, as Wynmond was the type to keep their pokemon out and about, but the totodile had, again, tried to run at another stranger and introduce himself. Wynmond simply didn't have the energy to keep up with Barker's current mood, nor did he feel emotionally ready to meet another person anytime soon.

Except, fate had a funny way of deciding for him.

Suddenly, as if to mock his innermost thoughts, he felt warmth on his lap and a voice yapping at him. His entire body jolted, head lifting and mouth gritting as he already felt the tired anger flicker in his stomach. He was tired, leave him alone-

Wait-

Before he could bark out his displeasure at some stranger apparating into thin air and making demands he registered what it was exactly in his lap. Instantly, like a switch, Wynmond's face lit up and he let out a strangled coo, gently patting the soft pink bulbasaur in his lap.

A baby!

"Ohh, and who are you? Aren't you sweet? Yes you are- yes you are!" Entirely enamored and producing the sounds of babied love and adoration, Wynmond had forgotten the other human for a moment. He hadn't yet been able to experience or touch a Nauwallian bulbasaur, but now that he could he was entirely smitten. What had they even said to him- something about research. Ah, right.

He cleared his throat and sat upright, folding his arms gently around the bulbasaur. His grumpiness had been entirely placated thanks to the small pokemon in his lap, making him almost agreeable.

"What task did you decide to take from the bulletin? And why me?"

"First of all, her name is Christmas and if you want to be her friend, she loves head scratches, just be careful of her antenna." Lan replied, getting the important part out of the way. "Task wise, notable behaviors and physical quirks of an Nauwallian bulbasuar." He nodded to the docile baby snuggled in in Wynmond's lap.

"Frankly, you look like a nerd." He paused, considering the rather extensive scaring across Wymond's face. "Even with the scars you still give out nerd vibes." He mused out loud and swept the expanse of his skirt under his legs as he sat down next to Wymond.

"I got her diet, and my twin helped with her temperament, and now it like brick wall and such I have came looking for help from a nerd and it looks like I have found one." He grinned, offering a slender hand, his manicure bright stunning teal blue with little geometric shapes in gold. "I'm Lan."

Christmas. That was utterly and completely adorable and he didn't know how to begin processing that information. His hands scratched at the top of Christmas' head, ever so gently of her antenna as he gave the bulba' a soft coo of affection. Such a baby.

'Frankly, you look like a nerd.'

Wynmond gave the stranger--Lan-- a dry glance, unamused and unbothered. Of course he was; one could simply tell by how he looked like he never went outside a day in his life. What else did a shut-in do? Still, he had never heard the term used as anything but an attempted insult at him, but the tone didn't match, did it? Was it just an observation, or an attempt to aggravate him?

Ugh, humans were exhausting.

The research, however, was interesting in itself. He had been eying the board earlier even and considered doing his own when Barker was awake and a little calmer. The other pokemon were far out of sight for him, as he only had the totodile at hand... until now.

Yeah, Lan had found just the right person to bring to the job.

"Fine," he conceded, running his gaze over the hand offered to him, occupying his hands with the task of the bulbasaur's scritches instead. "Wynmond Collins."

He examined Christmas, unable to stop the soft expression on his face as a hand freed itself to, gently, touch her bulb. Were Nauwillian bulbasaurs like Johto's? If they were then Christmas would likely excel around things plants liked the most, so...

"If I had a bulbasaur I'd take them to a spot with sunlight and water. A storm passed through the other day and there are still some considerable puddles in Doveport. Maybe we can see how she reacts to it."

"Wynmond Collins," Lan tasted the name, licking over his edge of his canine in thought. He gave a broad grin, amused at it. Even his name was nerdy. It was adorable. He reached down and carefully gathered up Christmas from Wynmond's lap, bringing her up to rest on his shoulder. "Guess we are going outside then."

Christmas gave a soft protesting Saaa, her vines wrapping around the odd shiny thing that had occupied her attention and pulled them towards her. These were her's now. She twisted them, and attempted to set them on her own face before giving an unhappy "Bulba!" In surprise at how odd the world look.

"What, ooh. No, those are not yours." Lan carefully took the away from her. "Thick aren't they?" He paused, taking a good look at the scar. Nasty looking thing. He hummed, sliding them back on Wynmond's face, carefully sliding the others silky hair out from behind the ears. "There. That is better." He gently patted Wynmond's face.

"Well, let's get going then." He said cheerfully, resting hand on Christmas's bulb. "Ooh, also if you got pollen on your hand, don't lick it off. I really don't understand why people claim it has benefits." He shook his head, nose wrinkling.

Christmas protested and Wynmond offered a crooked smile. "Shhh, it's okay," he cooed. Cute. Maybe, when Barker was not in a mood, he could let Barker out to say hi sometime.

His glasses suddenly were lifted and stolen, casting the world into a blur he tried by failed to squint away. Ah- shit. A hand feebly tried to trail after the blur that was her vine, waving aimlessly. His not-blind eye narrowed and he raised a hand to cover his blind one in some attempt to help see through the fog, but- right, yeah, why did he think that'd work? Ha.

"Yeah, I bet that looks weird," he murmured, lowering his hand and dryly laughing at Christmas and her surprise. A darker shadow he assumed was Lan came closer and hesitated, likely noticing his blinded eye and scar. Yeah, he was used to that. What he wasn't used to was the cool touch of Lan's hand, jolting from their fingertips and instantly tightening his entire posture as a wave of anxiety flashed through him like fire. Did Lan just touch him? Wynmond bit down on the inside of his cheek and kept his face as level and composed as possible, unwilling to allow another human to see his discomfort, even when Lan's hands brushed hair from behind his ear and patted his face.

Is this what people did? Instantly he was thrown right into his own anxiety-filled hell, hands growing clammy and skin heating uncomfortably. Luckily, he was used to faking a stoic and often irritated face, masking that panic with instead a stiff stare. What- what was Lan saying- pollen? His eyes drifted to his hand and he spread his fingers, standing while examining.

"Is that from experience?" He reflexively tapped his hand against Barker's pokeball, still in the habit of checking it was under his long jacket.

"Anyway, ah the puddle. It's this way." And with that and all his nerves bundled into an anxious fire, Wynmond stiffly turned and led the way.

"Yup," Lan replied, following Wynmond stride. His hanbok flowed around his legs as he followed, humming a jaunty tune he had been considering using for a show. "Have you ever seen those health adds and they market things like activated charcoal, or pollen, or chia seeds as like some sort of miracle health supplement?"

"Yeah so I decided to try it. It was disgusting." Lan really preferred honey. "I thought they might want to know about the taste. Or like health benefits."

"What ever they are suppose to be. I wonder if anyone going to be allergic to their bulbasaur." Lan shook his head. That would be miserable.

"So what was your starter? I know it wasn't a bulbasaur." Wynmond acted too enamored for it to be the same. "So that means only torchic and totodiles are left."

Unfortunate. Gross. Ew. He could imagine already the experience Lan went through, scrunching his face slightly at the thought. Yeah, no, he hadn't planned to try that anytime soon but especially not now.

"That would be miserable," he murmured. It reminded him of his dad, who was allergic to his own skitty. Wynmond was grateful he didn't have to suffer the same affliction.

'I know it wasn't bulbasaur.' Well, he was right, but it almost had been bulbasaur. Wynmond shook his head and gently brushed his fingertips over his pokeball again; just checking. Always checking. If he lost Barker he would be wracked with guilt forever.

"A totodile." His voice warmed and softened, melting at the edges while he briefly smiled. A good boy. "I would take him out, but he's still adjusting. He hasn't met another pokemon and I worry he might be too rough right now. He's torn through several of my things and has run at every trainer we've seen. Luckily, he's pretty friendly, but I'm letting him chill out for a little."

He wanted to ask Lan a question like he was supposed to do, but he already could feel his throat tighten at the idea of asking something stupid or annoying. Instead, the long and gangly man focused on retracing his steps from the other night.

And voila, massive puddle reached! The sunlight was warm and bright; a perfect spot for a bulbasaur. "Lets see what she does."

"Ooh, I haven't seen one of the Nauwill totodiles yet. They are native to Johto but I been wondering what difference are between the ones I'm familiar with and the ones here." He had been surprise at Christmas bright skin, her wavering atennea and the soft mound of fuzz that flowed out of her bulb. "Christmas reminds me of tropical flowers. Hot house ones."

Lan hummed, looking at the puddle. "That, is one big ass puddle." He lowered her down onto the ground. "Try not to get me soaked Christmas. This is not the easiest outfit to clean."

Christmas gave a gleeful noise and ran to the puddle as fast as her stubby legs could handle. She wiggled to a stop, nearly sliding into the muck and plopped her body right in the middle of the puddle with a gleeful. "Bulbasaur!"

"Well, I'm going to have to give her a bath." He muttered, shaking his head.

Christmas made cheerful noises as she settled into the puddle and then lowered her mouth to drink as much as she could.

Johto, huh? Sometimes, very rarely, Wynmond missed home. He knew there'd be trainers from all sorts of locations, Johto included, but the name itself was enough to bring him back to the memory of his folks. Ugh, he really needed to send a postcard.

"You're from Johto?" he found himself asking, although the answer seemed fairly obvious. Still, it was nice to meet someone from back home, or at least someone familiar with Johto.

Christmas went running and Wynmond crouched onto the balls of his feet to watch her. He rubbed his chin in thought, noting the... well, rather extraordinary amount of water she was guzzling for someone her size. Where did it all go, anyway? His eyes drifted to her bulb. Ah- maybe she stored it?

"Does she do this a lot? She's drinking a lot for her size, maybe she holds onto it..." His voice was low and thoughtful, completely entranced in what Christmas was doing. "It'd make sense, even."

"Mahogany Town," Lan admitted. "I left as fast as I could and then ended back near there guiding people down the dragon and ice caves." It had been fun and he had ended up as far away from his father as he could.

"Mmh?" Lan paused looking down at Christmas. "Are you a thirsty girl? Are you a thirsty girl Christmas?" He cooed, watching her drawn in more then half the puddle. "I would be concern you are going to give yourself a stomach ache but i'm going to take it you are good." He considered it.

"Possibly. It did seem that we were refilling their water dish a lot." Lan had thought that seemed a bit odd. "And she has tried following me into the shower before. Are you trying to store up water? Where do you store it baby?" He cooed, looking her over.

Christmas wiggled in what was becoming a mud wallow, cheerfully covering herself in cool comforting mud. "Bulba."

"You are so going to need a bath after this.... you wouldn't care to help me with that would you?"

Ah, he had been to Mahogany once as a child, but he hadn't gotten a chance to explore the nearby caves. He had wanted to do that, once upon a time. Maybe that'd be a goal if he ever went back home.

If.

"I see," he murmured under his breath, reaching into his jacket pocket to pull out a tiny notebook. "That might be useful for their research, then." He finished his notes with a sharp tap with the tip of his pen against the paper, tucking it back into hiding.

He leaned closer, leaning on the front of his feet in an attempt to observe her directly and note any interesting quirks. It... admittedly was hard to do when she was absolutely covered in mud, and an effort he was willing to abandon. He stood, brushing his hands off onto his legs as he returned to his full height. Ha? Was that question directed at him? Or Christmas?

"Well, uh, that'd be a good tip to turn in; how much she drinks water and the possibility she stores it in her bulb. It's really the only place I could imagine she stores it in -- her stomach isn't extended and she looks, otherwise, fine." Unless she was legitimately a bottomless pit, but...

Well! He was already feeling his very tiny social battery beginning to internally scream, and he was once again impatient to let Barker out and spend more time with his new starter.

"That's all I got in me- but, if you need help again and I'm around you can ask for help." Lan wasn't too bad, or at least hadn't yet offended Wyn to the point he didn't want anything to do with them. Really, it wasn't even about Lan. It was entirely about Christmas, who Wynmond was already soft on.

"Does that sound good to you, Christmas? I gotta head back, but maybe we'll see each other again, hmm?" Ah yes, the baby voice was back.

"Hmm, that could be useful." Lan admitted, glad someone had an idea how how to do the research. He swept his skirt back, away from the mud as he squatted down. "Come on Christmas, baby." He cooed, attempting to coax her out of the muddle puddle.

"I see, leaving me alone to do the dirty work," he teased, slowly coaxing her out. "There we go. You are soo, soo messy." Lan pulled out her pokeball. "Say good bye to Wynmond."

Christmas shifted, looking up at Wynnie and pat his cheek with one muddy vine. "Bulbaaaa." She proclaimed, wrapping her vine around his sleeve for a moment before nudging her pokeball.

"Hopefully that shucks off some of the mud problem." Lan set her pokeball back in his sleeve. "I guess I'll see you around Wynmond?" He questioned and paused, fishing out his phone. "Wait, give me your number." He pushed it out to him. "So we can meet up again."

Wynmond melted when Christmas tapped his cheek, even if it was covered in mud and left a streak against his pale skin. Nothing a quick brush of his cheek couldn't fix, anyway. She was a good bulbasaur -- yes she was!

"It's a good idea," he admitted, hand reflexively tapping his own pokeball as his brain briefly drifted to Barker. He'd need to try that the next time Barker absolutely covered himself in filth, which... was often.

"Alright, well, I'm just-" Wynnie had been in the process of scurrying away when Lan pulled out his phone and shoved it at Wynmond, who answered with a raised eyebrow. Oh, yeah, right, right right. That's what people did when they wanted to stay in contact. Wynmond couldn't say he was often thought of in such a way; the numbers he had on his phone were just his parents and someone he purposefully had blocked. The reception on the island itself was limited, begging the question of why he even needed a phone when it was practically useless in Nauwill. Still, his mother had made him promise to carry the device regardless, even if the most usage it ever saw lately was accessing the Nauwill community server.

Anyway, the point was that he felt completely out of his element again. That's why he was in Nauwill in the first place, wasn't it? To undo habits he had frankly used as excuses to never grow or try things? To Lan it likely wasn't a big deal to hand the phone over, but for Wynmond the mere act of accepting Lan's phone was a big step.

"S-sure," he internally winced at the nervous stammer while he fished his own phone out. "One sec, I don't know my number by heart." Where was it- aaaah. He quickly typed in his number and name (Wynmond Collins) and gestured for Lan to take the phone back.

"I'll, uh, be around," he gestured around himself. "Remember to also turn in what we saw today. I heard they're still looking for more information." Which he was going to write up and do the second he got back to his living quarters.

He waved loosely as he headed off, hands shoving back into his pockets as he headed off to wherever it was a melancholy writer liked to brood when overstimulated. His bed, probably, or to make a cup of coffee. He doubted he'd see Lan again, honestly -- people liked to make plans and never showed up when it came to him. Still, it was nice to meet the bulbasaur and get his first look at a Nauwillian one.

Maybe someday he'd have his own, too.
