What is pokémon fusion?

Pokémon fusion is a process where a pokémon can be born with the traits of two normally unrelated species; this has only been documented on Nauwill, thanks to strange minerals known as fusion crystals. Similar to an elemental stone in nature, these crystals have a mysterious power that combines features in new and exciting ways.

These crystals come in two varieties, and can only be rarely found in expeditions or won in events:

Fusion shards: Found rarely in expeditions and gained through events.
These little pieces of fusion crystals are the more common variant known to the residents of Nauwill, and the ones most likely to be actually held by one of them. When given to pokémon, they may sometimes be absorbed when that pokémon creates an egg, resulting in a lesser fusion.

Fusion crystals: Obtained rarely through events or formed from a hundred fusion shards.
A full fusion crystal is a coveted item, as they are exceptionally rare in the wild and typically only formed by gathering a huge mass of shards together in one place. When given to pokemon, they may sometimes be absorbed when that pokémon creates an egg, resulting in an entirely new species - a greater fusion.

Standard Fusions

A standard fusion is still, more or less, the base species it seems to be. The primary difference is the colors; a standard fusion will inherit the colors and patterning of its other parent, resulting in things like a Beedrill colored Butterfree or a Skitty colored Wailord.

Standard fusions have all the same base stats and typing as their primary species. The only difference is their coloration!

Greater Fusions

Greater fusions are pokémon born into bodies that are full combinations of two other species. These pokémon can be considered entirely new; typically their bodies resemble one parent more heavily than the other, and their coloration the opposite, but this isn't a hard and fast rule. There will always be features of both present and mixed into their appearance.

A greater fusion will have base stats adjusted to represent its bloodlines, and it will have typing that represents a combination of those as well. Evolution stats will still be increased appropriately so that fusions of lower stage mons aren't inherently weaker by design!

Note that while greater fusions can evolve, only the "primary" form - that is, the main body shape - will evolve. In the two above examples, Poppleen (Popplio/Goldeen) will evolve into Brioleen (Brionne/Goldeen), but not Poppking (Popplio/Seaking) or Brioking (Brionne/Seaking). Growlmog (Growlithe/Cosmog) will likewise evolve into Arcamog (Arcanine/Cosmog), but not Growlmoem (Growlithe/Cosmoem) or Arcamoem (Arcanine/Cosmoem).

Breeding for Fusions

Outside of RLC, the only source of fusions is events, games, and breeding.

In order to breed for fusions, you need to leave a pokémon for breeding along with a fusion shard or fusion crystal. After that, it's totally up to fate! Eggs are not guaranteed to produce fusions, but you'll know when it happens - fused eggs will be clearly marked and your shard or crystal will be used up.

There is no way to control what pokémon is fused with which; pokémon breeding is totally random, and as such, so are the species you can obtain - limited only by which are present in the facility. Note that staff will do our best not to make any troll fusions, however; you won't get a Bidoof/Bibarel lesser fusion, for instance. That would just be cruel.
