Hopscotch ☘ A Rabbit Shop

The World of Hopscotch

Hopscotch on its surface is an idyllic world where rabbits roam freely. Many live in warrens, and other choose to remain solitary. Some rabbits collect interesting fauna, others try to explore the world around them, and some work hard to build their families and warrens.

Below the surface, things are perhaps a little more complex than they first appear ...

You can learn more about each region of Hopscotch in its individual subforum. The average rabbit can make it from one side of Hopscotch to the other in about a week.

Rabbits in Hopscotch typically live lives closely aligned with the changing seasons. Some rabbits choose to go it alone, or in loose groups while others choose to live in more structured warrens. All rabbits live off of a diet that mostly consists of grasses and most rabbits make their homes underground.

Names

Every rabbit in Hopscotch has a name, but not every name in Hopscotch is unique. Some rabbits have practices in which they pass down family names, others give their offspring new unique names. All names in Hopscotch must follow a few guidelines.

Guidelines
- Names are not sentences.
- Most rabbit names are no longer than two words.
- Most names are based on natural things rabbit encounter.
- Some names are totally made up words.
- Some names are based on characteristics, interests or appearances.
- Rabbits shouldn't be named after human objects, places or mythologies.
- Rabbits don't consider titles part of their names.

Other Dwellers

Hopscotch is primarily home to rabbits, but a few other species pop in from time to time. Bird, from small song birds to large birds of prey, are one of the most commonly seen animals. Bugs, like beetles, worms, bees and butterflies are also very common. Wise rabbits also avoid going into the deep woods, where strange larger creatures with a taste for bunnies are said to lurk.

The rabbits of Hopscotch have no concept of what a human is. As far as they are concerned they are the dominant species here.

Risks

Despite the idyllic nature of Hopscotch, there are some risks present that wise rabbits are aware of. Most wary rabbits make it to a ripe old age before they pass away. Those who are more foolish are not always as lucky ...

Deep in The Tanglewood and far into Poppy Hills there are large predators that would happily make a rabbit a meal. Many mothers warn their kits of these things, and some even threaten their arrival if kits get up to mischief. Wise rabbits keep a close eye to the sky when out in exposed meadows, as there are birds of prey in these lands. When in such exposed places most rabbits use team work to stay safe.

There are a variety of flowers, berries and mushrooms that are not fit for rabbit consumption and can lead to illness or even death. Rabbits have a decent instinctive knowledge of these things, but when in doubt a wise rabbit consults with a friend or two before trying an exotic morsel.

For most of the year Hopscotch is quite temperate. Occasionally the summer can get hot enough to cause heat stroke and head exhaustion and the winter cold enough for frost bite.

Diet

The rabbits of Hopscotch eat diets of mostly wild grasses supplemented with other foraged items. Most days a rabbit would eat at least 90% grass. Other common snacks are wild plants like nettle, dandelion, mint, and basil. On occasion rabbits will seek out a treat of some sort, usually in the form of a berry or fruit. Blackberries, blueberries and raspberries are all favorites. During the winter rabbits will seek out whatever is available, and may even make a meal of the stalks of woody bushes.

Some other edible to rabbits plants do grow throughout Hopscotch, but they are far less common than those mentioned above by name. No highly cultivated/domesticated crops exist, so keep that in mind when you're envisioning what your rabbit may come across in the wild. Please also bear in mind Hopscotch is set in a North American Pacific Northwest type environment. Flora that occurs naturally in this region covers what your rabbit it likely to encounter.

Hopscotch has four distinct seasons - spring, summer, autumn and winter. For the most part the weather is relatively mild, though there can be the odd extreme weather event. Seasons rotate every real world month. You can check the Season Bulletin to learn what season it currently is.

Spring

Spring is the rainy season in Hopscotch. Most days have a least a brief shower. Temperatures are generally cool. but not uncomfortable. Fresh leaves and shoots are plentiful, but fruits and berries are rare. Spring also signals the beginning of a baby boom in Hopscotch.

Summer

Summers can get hot, but rarely scorching. Most days are sunny, with occasional rain showers. Summer is a time of abundance. Grasses, herbs, fruits, vegetables and berries are plentiful. Many litters are also born in this season.

Autumn

Autumns are a mix of balmy days and cool nights. Frost typically sets in mid season. It can be quite windy during autumn, with rainstorms not unusual. Grasses start to die off, but many fruits and vegetables have reached their peak. Rabbits are often extra industrious during this season in order to be prepared for the coming winter.

Winter

Winters are typically quite chilly. Snow flurries happen every now and then, but snow rarely builds up beyond the height of your average rabbit. Winter is a lean time, where rabbits must forage on whatever they can find, or what they've manage to preserve in their burrows. Litters are rarely born during this season.

Some rabbits choose to live in groups called warrens. While all warrens are different, they all share some similarities. Warrens have at least five members, though many have more than that. All warrens also have joining requirements, which can be found in their subforum. All warrens also have a permanent location where they reside. Some warrens are open to visitors, while others are not.

Current Warrens

You can visit each warren's subforum to learn more about them. This is just a top level synopsis.

Nymph's Pool Warren - Nymph's Pool
