In an attempt to not have a repeat of the last few disastrous minutes of their expedition, Pip decided it would be best to rearrange their configuration a bit. Pip considered pulling Lanette in favour of their second unwilling acquired lapras, but they knew that Lanette would take that action as a slight, regardless of their injured state, so Pip decided to stay on them for the time being.
They pulled Little Guy out of the water to sit with them on the shell, just so that they would have a better idea where he was, when they next encountered a wild pokemon. He was their most accomplished and reliable battler, and if they wanted to get much deeper into the valley today, they were going to need him to keep the trouble off of Lanette and their more observant pokemon. The little Nauwillian Totodile was more than happy to have the rare opportunity to cuddle with their normally standoffish trainer, and had no objections to having their playtime cut short.
Mezzo (who had tried to avert the previous disasters with no success) was reassigned from general watch, to active scouting, and was popping in and out of the bushes and branches of the foliage on the shore, while Pip kept their eyes trained on the water and the hazards in front of them. (They were already going to have at least one nasty bruise, they didn’t need any more…)
After a few minutes of blessedly uneventful travel, Mezzo started chiming excitedly, as they took chase after something they had encountered in the trees. A moment later a rowlet burse from the leaves and started making a break for it across the river, which gave Little Guy the opportunity they needed. On a signal from Pip, they scrambled up to stand at the front of Lanette’s shell to shoot off a powerful and perfectly aimed blast of water, catching the flying type off guard.
Pip was able to take advantage of the pokemon’s dazed state to whip out one of the pokeballs they kept in their pocket, and they heard the sound of a successful capture before the ball even hit the water.
Little Guy immediately jumped into the waves in order to retrieve the ball, as they had been trained to do. They had been below the water just long enough for Pip to think they should have been back already, when a Nauwillian Poliwag surfaced in a hurry just ahead of them! The little creature was making good time, but it wasn’t faster than Little Guy, who had apparently flushed it out of the deeper parts of the water and was currently giving case, all with the newly captured Rowlet’s ball in his mouth.
At Pip’s direction, Lanette increased her speed to keep pace with the two smaller pokemon, and flanked them so that her trainer would have a good angle on them. Pip whistled and Little Guy swooped around to press the local poliwag closer, giving Pip an easy target for their second wild capture attempt in as many minutes!
The second capture was successful as well, and, after a minute of dropping one of the balls in order to pick up the other, and then repeating in the other direction, Little Guy was able to bring them over to Pip who stored the pokemon safely away to been investigated later.
