Normally Pip left a few days between their expeditions. Partially to give themselves and their pokemon a bit of a break, but also because they had an actual job on the island that they had to work around. However, as it happened, they had happened to have two days off in a row, and their excursion the previous day had been both encouragingly successful and did not result in any injury to themselves or their pokemon. So they topped off the supplies in their bag and set out on another little adventure.

Last time they had made it farther into the forest than they had on any of their previous adventures, and they had stayed by the river the entire time so that they could work with Lanette. They had even cleared out some obstructions that should make today’s trek even smoother. However the most effective option they could take would be to actually ride Lanette down the river, rather than holding her back to their land speed… but she was still young and hadn’t taken any passengers other than some of Pip’s smaller pokemon.

They pressed the button to summon Lanette for her pokeball as soon as they were at the water’s edge. Normally they keep a distance from the water while their pokemon are in it, but they were going to have to do this eventually… and no day like today and what not. They smiled at Lanette, trying to look encouraging.

“Do you think you’re up to trying some passenger work today? I’d like to get back to where we finished yesterday.”

Lanette clearly understood a good deal of what Pip had said – more than they would have thought, given her relatively young age – but not entirely. They brought out a treat to draw her right to the water’s edge where Pip waded in up to their knees. Pip gave her lots of pats and pushed on her shell periodically to get her used to the feeling.

Once it seemed like she was comfortable, Pip pulled themselves up onto her back with a single deft movement and settling themselves between the ridges of her shell with the skill of someone who had clearly done so many times before. Although the shell spikes were unique to each creature, they were all in roughly the same locations, and related lapras often had very similar shells. Pip had spent their whole life riding lapras from Lanette’s lineage.

Lapras were particularly well suited to carrying people. They were usually quite sturdy in the water, and even inexperienced riders were rarely at risk of upsetting the creatures or doing something to get themselves thrown. However there were still some ways to make it more comfortable for the lapras, and Pip did them without even consciously considering them. They took their seat at the forward part of the shell and rested their knees against the side of her shoulders. (Eventually they’d work on communicating direction through touch, but for now there really was only one way to go.)

Before they got any deeper into the forest they did call Mezzo the chingling out of their ball as well. Normally they would have called out Little Guy too, but, it was harder to keep track of him in the water from the water, and having him stay on land would defeat the purpose of riding on Lanette in the first place. They directed the chingling to settle itself on their shoulder, and signaled Lanette to start traveling forward.

Surprisingly, they actually made it back to where they cleared the last piece of debris yesterday without incident. Pip has been sure they would run into a swarm of chinchou or something, but, like yesterday, the water had been mostly clear of any obvious wild pokemon.

Lanette was a very easy ride, even in the choppy river waters. She stayed steady and only needed slight correction when they came to some of the trickier locations. They were getting splashed more regularly than they might have on a more experienced lapras, but far less than they were expecting. They made sure to dole out the positive reinforcement generously, giving her lots of praise and, when they reached their destination, a high value treat.

Pip guided her over to the edge of the water again and slid off her shell. There wasn’t a nice sloping bank to the river here, but rather a short but sheer dropoff that lined the water on either side. It wasn’t a particularly difficult ledge to pull themselves up, however, and there was plenty of foliage to use as hand and foot holds.

The area of the bank they had hauled themselves up onto was mostly clear, except for the bush they had used to pull themselves the last of the way. They set their pack down against it as they started to change from their water shoes to something that would be more comfortable to walk in for long distances. When they went to attach their water shoes to the bag, it was gone!

They looked around and quickly spotted a little Nauwillian wurmple trying to abscond with the pack into the shrubbery! Pip hastily took a ball out of their pocket and lobbed it at the escaping pokemon, just in the hopes to slow it down long enough for Mezzo (who was at that moment napping on Lanette’s shell) to catch up with it. However the ball clicked closed, successfully capturing the pokemon, on the second attempt.

Pip blinked. “Huh.” They said, then looked more closely at the random ball they had thrown to see what type it had been. It was a fast ball. Convenient. “I guess I have a local wurmple then.”

They got to their feet and went to retrieve the bag and the newly occupied ball.

Once that had been settled they called Mezzo over from Lanette and continued moving forward, signaling for the lapras to follow from the river.

After a little bit more traveling Pip thought they saw something scurrying through the underbrush and directed Mezzo to go and flush whatever it was out. The little chimecho flew in from the far side of the bush, as instructed, and started to make a discordant racket. The technique worked and a moment later a Nauwillian scatterbug came racing out of the bushes!

Mezzo was right on it’s heels, sending psychic attacks at the other pokemon at Pip’s command. When it had the bug type pokemon on it’s heels, Pip took out another ball (one of the ones provided by the research center this time) and attempted to capture it! It looked like it was going to break free, but, at what Pip thought was the last possible moment, it clicked closed.

The had Mezzo bring the ball back to them and they stuck it in their pocket next to the wurmple they had captured for themselves. It looked like this trip was off to a decent start as well! Seeing as they had now captured two pokemon for themselves in the last two days, they figured they should focus on catching pokemon for the research centers going forward. They didn’t want to expand their collection too far before they had managed to train up the pokemon they had, after all.

3A small inlet from the river seems almost too perfectly made... Success reveals signs of definite intentional tampering - it seems like this pool is some kind of aquatic pokémon's nesting ground.Unusual Terrain3

Unusual Terrain
The players discover an unusual feature of the area. Each player may roll one character's INS + Clever vs the event's difficulty. If at least one character succeeds, then the characters document enough information about the feature to help the researchers back at Doveport and gain +1 research at the end of the adventure. Any mention of success only reveals the sort of discovery it is for roleplay purposes.

The trio continued their path through the woods, following the path of the river. Pip took out the sinkers again and started running some drills with Lanette as they walked, but they were mostly doing it because it seemed like the lapras was getting bored and they didn’t want to deal with a grumpy 480lb sea monster. She seemed quite content with the play, even if Pip’s attention was mostly on the environment around they.

After a while they came across an area where the river bent to one side and, in a position that was unexpected given the course of the water, there was a little inlet. They approached it carefully, suspecting that it might be the den of some kind of aquatic or amphibious pokemon, but closer inspection revealed it was empty.

It had definitely been intentionally constructed though! The way the nearby foliage spilled into the water it would probably have been an excellent place to hide soft-shelled eggs or tiny vulnerable young. They knew that the area had a thriving Nauwillian poliwag population, and Kantonian poliwag were known to exhibit similar behaviours. It stood to reason that this could be one of their doing.

Pip dutifully took some pictures to share with the researchers responsible for this part of the island. They wondered, if they looked closely, if they would find anymore nests like this one? Given that there wasn’t much river waste floating on the surface like they would expect from a spot like this where the current was practically nonexistent, they suspected that the nest had been recently occupied. Perhaps it was breeding season for the local poliwag? If they had seasonal peaks, it would be reasonable to expect to see more nests. If they didn’t follow that kind of routine, they might not.

They stood back up and looked around just in time to see one of the Nauwillian poliwags duck below the surface not too far away! Perhaps it had come from the nest, and Pip or Lanette had scared it out? If they caught it, they might be able to tell if it was juvenile or a breeding age adult, which might tell them something about the breeding patterns!

Pip hastily pulled out a research ball to try and capture it with, but they fumbled and ended up getting an awkward grip on it. Instead of sorting themselves out first, they tried to toss the ball before the local poliwag got away! Unfortunately, because of that, they threw wide and the ball splashed uselessly into the water.

The wild pokemon disappeared again before they could instruct Lanette (who had been underwater at the time, retrieving one of the sinkers) to try and cut off it’s escape. Such a shame. They could have potentially learned some interesting things from that specimen. They would have to be more careful with their capture attempts in the future.

In the meantime, they rewarded Lanette for her excellent job retrieving the sinker, and pulled Little Guy out of his ball. At least with the Nauwillian totodile to keep Lanette entertained and happy they could focus all of their attention on the actual field work they were, ostensibly, here to do.

9A thick, thorny brush blocks the way. Roll (STR or SPEC) + INS to have a pokémon clear the dangerous plants.Pokémon Danger2

Pokémon Danger
The players encounter a danger, whether terrain or pokémon based, which can or should be tackled by a pokémon instead of a human.

If the event indicates a simple danger, one at a time players may choose a pokémon to roll the indicated stats vs the event's difficulty. If they fail, that pokémon loses 1 VIT for the remainder of the Expedition. The event cannot be finished until all players have rolled at least one pokémon (if they have any available).
