9A thick, thorny brush blocks the way. Roll (STR or SPEC) + INS to have a pokémon clear the dangerous plants.Pokémon Danger2

Pokémon Danger
The players encounter a danger, whether terrain or pokémon based, which can or should be tackled by a pokémon instead of a human.

If the event indicates a simple danger, one at a time players may choose a pokémon to roll the indicated stats vs the event's difficulty. If they fail, that pokémon loses 1 VIT for the remainder of the Expedition. The event cannot be finished until all players have rolled at least one pokémon (if they have any available).

Not too much farther down the river they arrived at the next blockage. It seemed like the storm had done quite a number on this place. It wasn’t too surprising, given how brutal it had been. (And, Pip was quietly pretty sure that some kind of extremely powerful pokemon had been responsible. They still remembered seeing that shadow in the sky that afternoon… although it was possible it was just a large local bird pokemon trying to escape, or a trick of the light through the heavy storm clouds. But still.)

Once again Pip directed Lanette through the delicate-but-not-complicated task of strategically blasting and removing the obstruction. For now they were trying to keep her from trying to interact with the problems physically (as opposed to with ranged attacks as they were presently doing), partially for her own safety, but also because they wanted her to work on her aim and control. She did seem more adept at it than with more physical attacks, although Pip wasn’t sure if that was a trait she would keep or something that was merely the result of her still being a juvenile.

Lapras form their grandmother’s line were usually better suited for special than physical attacks though, so they suspected that the preference would remain with Lanette as well.

As she had the previous times, Lanette cleared the obstruction without complications and the party was able to continue down the river.

The part of the forest they had reached now was even denser and darker than the previous area (something Pip didn’t think was even possible, but here they were). The river had also narrowed, but not so much that it was difficult or uncomfortable for Lanette to pass through. The real problem was proving to be the underbrush, which was getting thick enough that Pip was having to put their foot through bushes in order to keep moving forward. Even in their hiking boots, that wasn’t Pip’s first choice. For one thing, that was practically asking to get themselves attacked by some poor startled pokemon.

However, they didn’t want to make it harder on Lanette by asking her to carry them through this section, so they found a long stick and started using it to poke at the shrubbery before they stepped forward.

It was a good plan, because not long after they started, they poked the stick where they were going to step and a Nauwillian weedle came racing up it at them! They dropped the stick and backpedaled as best as they could without tripping so that Mezzo could rush up to meet the attacking pokemon.

Mezzo’s interception sent them both careening into another bush, and Pip only got bits and pieces of their scuffle as they occasionally popped out from between the leaves. Their chingling did seem to have the situation in (metaphoric) hand though, so they took the chance to fish around in their pockets for another research ball and readied themselves to try catching the Nauwillian weedle when it reappeared.

A moment later the bug went shooting out of the bush after a particularly strong Astonish from Mezzo. Pip threw their research ball and it connected mid air, falling to the ground to rock back and forth a few times before clicked shut. Another pokemon to return to the research center! Excellent!

The “poke then step” method worked to keep their ankles bug-bite and sink-hole free until they made it back out to a slightly clearer section of the woods.

As they rounded another bend they saw that, once again, debris had piled up against the bank, narrowing and intensifying the flow of the river. This time Lanette didn’t even need prompting from Pip before she started carefully breaking up the clusters that had caused the build up. She really was a clever little thing. It was a good thing she was pretty well natured, or else she could have been a real problem for her trainer!

Pip did their part to help as well, hauling some of the larger pieces that were against the bank up out of the water. Under normal circumstances they wouldn’t be doing so much to mess with the natural flow of the river, but (in addition to being an excellent training opportunity) this kind of disruption was liable to cause localized flooding. Again, normally, that would have all been an accepted and appreciated part of the local ecological evolution, but, here and now, there were a lot of trainers who were unfamiliar with the area traveling through.

This forest was already full enough of sinkholes without new ones forming because of the recent storm.

4You stumble into a plant patch covered in stinging hairs. Roll INS + DEX to extract yourself safely.Trainer Danger2

Trainer Danger
The players encounter a danger, whether terrain or pokémon based, which directly threatens one or more players.

If the event indicates all characters are in danger, roll the directed stats vs the event's difficulty for each character. If a character fails the roll, they lose 1 VIT for the remainder of the Expedition.

If the event indicates one character is in danger, players decide which character will be targeted; players may roll 1d20 with the lowest number being targeted if they don't want to decide themselves. That character rolls the directed stats vs the event's difficulty. If they fail, that character loses 1 VIT for the remainder of the Expedition.

At the risk of jinxing things… so far, so good.

Pip was really starting to feel confident about their expedition-ing skills. It wasn’t like they didn’t have any wilderness survival skills before arriving… it was just that most of that expertise was tailored towards aquatic environments. If you needed them to survive on a boat with limited supplies for a long period of time, they were all set. This bush-whacking stuff was still a bit novel to them. They thought they were settling in okay though.

Although it was largely clearer along the shore here, they still ran into spots where the foliage got thick under foot again, and they resumed their poke-it-first policy. The trick continued to do well by them, including scaring up yet another Nauwillian scatterbug!

This time they had Mezzo fly around to stop it from rushing deeper into the forest and they instructed Lanette to send some random spouts of water into the tree cover that crossed the river, in order to dissuade the bug-type from escaping in that direction. Pip themselves ran back and forth a few times, trying to corral the bug and get a good angle on it with another research ball.

Eventually they saw their chance and took it! This time the ball snapped closed almost immediately after it absorbed the pokemon. The bug had looked quite small, even by Nauwillian scatterbug standards, so it was probably a very young and inexperienced pokemon. They knew that stronger pokemon often had an easier time breaking free of pokeballs, and this one didn’t seem to put up much of a fight.

Pip stopped for a moment to consider the four pokemon they had successfully captured on this trip thus far. They had the local wurmple that would become one of their companions, and for the research center they had acquired two native scatterbugs and a local weedle. It was a shame they had missed their shot on that Nauwillian poliwag – they would have been very curious to have a closer look at it themselves.

Still, for all their trips out to the Darksallow Valley, they had yet to encounter one of the rowlets that were allegedly nesting in the area. They wondered if they would have more luck continuing forward, or if they should turn back and check some of the areas they had found nests before? It had been a good few hours since they had set out, and they should head back with enough extra time to make extra sure they would arrive back at the city at a reasonable time.

Hmmm… maybe they would explore just a little bit further first. After all, they still had time and it would be a shame to come all the way back out here again on their next trip only to immediately hit another block.

They resumed their path forward, using their stick to negotiate the thick foliage and avoid any of the prickly bushes.

Success reveals feathers and claw marks indicate this area is a sleeping spot for feathery pokemon.
Unusual Terrain2

Unusual Terrain
The players discover an unusual feature of the area. Each player may roll one character's INS + Clever vs the event's difficulty. If at least one character succeeds, then the characters document enough information about the feature to help the researchers back at Doveport and gain +1 research at the end of the adventure. Any mention of success only reveals the sort of discovery it is for roleplay purposes.

Pip lead the party a little bit farther. They came across another Nauwillian poliwag who also escaped (much to Pip’s chagrin), and evidence of potential rowlet activity, but none of the bird pokemon themselves. Still, they felt like they had done well on this trip! When they found a good spot they switched their shoes, joined Lanette in the river, and then rode on her shell back to town with Mezzo bouncing behind them. They could resume their exploration from here the next time!
