Darksallow Valley was not, Pip would admit, their favourite part of the island. However, there was no direction other than forward. If they wanted to see more of this place, they would need to get through here. So, armed with the strongest of their ever-growing pokemon team, Pip headed out.

Shortly after they arrived on the island they had received a letter from their grandmother who was ecstatic to hear that they had decided to start their pokemon journey. Mémère had been a multi-league champion back in her day and had turned down the opportunity to be a water-type gym leader in Kalos. She was still a very intimidating woman who assumed she knew what’s best for all of her children and grandchildren. She had always thought that Pip should have followed in her footsteps and had been trying to convince them to register with a league since they were old enough to own a pokemon.

So, the second she heard her favourite grandchild was finally becoming a trainer (in the traditional sense; as they had been working as a trainer at the family training facility since they were a child) she wasted no time in sending Pip a baby from her champion lapras’ latest clutch. Obviously Pip couldn’t refuse such a generous offer… even if they would have much rather not added so many water-types to their roster all at once.

That baby lapras was Lanette. She was a beautiful example of the species, with the deep royal blue colouring that Mémère’s lapras was famous for, perfect proportions, and a healthy and smooth shell. Mémère had said she was the pick of the litter, but she was actually also one of the finest lapras to come from their grandmother’s breeding program in years. They really were honoured to be chosen to train her.

Like most of their previous trips, Pip had both Mezzo and Little Guy out of their pokeballs as they set off to explore the forested valley. This time however, when they reached the part of the river that was wide enough, they also summoned Lanette from her ball.

The lapras looked around as she settled into the water, assessing the environment. She nosed the water and then looked up at her trainer, a bit disdainfully.

Pip sighed. “I know it’s a bit grimy compared to what you’re used to, but it’s good to train in a variety of water types.” The current of the river would require Lanette to work to stay at pace with Pip on the shore. They had an artificial river at the training centre back home, but the varying conditions of the real river provided an even better training environment. It also presented it’s own kind of challenges, of course. They eyes the water for any signs of lights below the surface.

One or more aggressive pokémon attack! Roll 1-100 and determine which pokémon you've found from the area's chart; all players find the same pokémon, so only one person needs to roll. Each player is allowed to roll one of their pokémon's STR or SPEC + VIT or DEX vs the event's difficulty, if they brought a pokémon; if they fail, that pokémon loses 2 VIT. If a player succeeds, they can roll their character's DEX + their choice of ball's Catch Score vs the event's difficulty to try and catch one of the now defeated wild pokémon.

After a little while walking through the forest, Little Guy decided to run over and join Lanette in the water, leaving just Mezzo up the bank with Pip. Pip was keeping their eyes mostly on the ground in front of them, weary of falling into any more pit traps while they were out here alone, but Mezzo was keeping vigilant and scanning the trees around them, so it was the one that spotted the Nauwillian weedle first. It was sitting on one of the branches reaching out over the path ahead of them, growing agitated at their approach.

Mezzo chimed to get its trainer’s attention and direct it to the wild pokemon. Pip dutifully acknowledged the little bell’s excellent spot, and reached into the pocket where they kept their empty pokeballs. They didn’t have a local weedle yet, and they were kind of excited to find out what one of them might evolve into. “Okay Mezzo – confusion, then wrap. Hold it still for me.”

They gave their orders just as the weedle launched itself at them! Mezzo intercepted the bug mid-air, chiming discordantly at it. The confusion landed, and the weedle fell to the forest floor in a daze. Mezzo followed it down and dodged it’s clumsy sting attacks in order to wrap its arms around it. Pip wasted no time throwing one of their net balls at the nauwillian weedle. The ball wiggled a few times as the pokemon tried to escape, but the confusion did it’s job, and the ball clicked closed!

The chingling scooped up the now occupied ball and floated over to its trainer, obviously just as pleased as Pip was at how successful their little maneuver had been. They reached out to rub its head affectionately. “Good job little guy.”

Their nauwillian totodile popped his head back out of the water upon hearing his name, and Pip smiled at him apologetically. “Sorry. Not you. Although you’re a good boy too!”

5Several of the trees here seem to have deep holes in their sides...
Success reveals feathers and claw marks indicate this area is a sleeping spot for feathery pokemon.
Unusual Terrain2

Unusual terrain
The players discover an unusual feature of the area. Each player may roll one character's INS + Clever vs the event's difficulty. If at least one character succeeds, then the characters document enough information about the feature to help the researchers back at Doveport and gain +1 research at the end of the adventure. Any mention of success only reveals the sort of discovery it is for roleplay purposes.

The team continues on for a little longer. As they go, Pip works with Lanette on some basic exercises and retrieval drills. They brought a few different coloured sinkers, and occasionally threw one or more of them into the water, giving instructions for the lapras to return them in a specific order. Predictably Little Guy wanted in on the fun, so they added a few teamwork drills into the mix. With Mezzo watching the trees they were able to focus most of their attention on the pokemon in the water.

Lanette was performing excellently, even if she had an air about her that suggested she was above such rudimentary drills. Which… to be fair, she kind of was. Lapras on the whole were quite clever. Their intelligence was generally considered equal to (if not superior to, in the opinions of people like their grandmother) the average human. Of course, Lanette was still a baby, so her understanding was limited more by age than anything else. Pip knew from growing up around lapras that she would reach a more adult level of understanding much faster than any human child would, but for the time being she was essentially a very clever toddler.

The drills they were doing were mostly for learning colour names and establishing communication. She couldn’t be expected to come out of the egg with a full understanding of the common language. Besides, like any child, she needed playtime. For all her airs and graces, she did seem to be having fun, and had taken to teasing the faster but smaller little totodile by holding the rings out of his reach and racing him up and down the river.

Pip left them to their play for a bit so that they could spend a little time examining the trees. The last few times they had been in the forest they had come across a few interesting things, like berries with restorative properties and what were clearly the nests of a bird type pokemon Pip hadn’t encountered yet. They had heard from other trainers that rowlettes had been spotted, which tracked with what they remembered of the feathers they had found.

It didn’t take too long of searching to come across another empty roosting nook, and sure enough the feathers that made up part of the bedding were the soft brown typical of the species. They marked down the location in their notebook to report to the research centre and kept exploring.

9A thick, thorny brush blocks the way. Roll (STR or SPEC) + INS to have a pokémon clear the dangerous plants.Pokémon Danger2

Pokémon Danger
The players encounter a danger, whether terrain or pokémon based, which can or should be tackled by a pokémon instead of a human.

If the event indicates a simple danger, one at a time players may choose a pokémon to roll the indicated stats vs the event's difficulty. If they fail, that pokémon loses 1 VIT for the remainder of the Expedition. The event cannot be finished until all players have rolled at least one pokémon (if they have any available).

If the event indicates a major danger, each player may choose one pokémon to roll the indicated stats. Add up all successes vs the event's difficulty. If the players fail, they are Knocked Out and must end the Expedition.

A little ways down the river the path was obstructed. It looked like, maybe during the storm, part of the bank had collapsed, bringing with it a couple of the thorny bushes that were so prolific in the area. The water rushed over the plants and they would probably soon be washed away by the current, but in the meantime any pokemon that tried to swim through that area was liable to get tangled up in the vines and roots.

Pip assessed the situation and decided it wasn’t too dangerous for their pokemon to attempt to deal with, so they signaled for Lanette to come forward while Little Guy stayed back. They were pretty sure the totodile could deal with this too, and their tough hide would probably protect them better, but they wanted Lanette to get the chance to work on her problem solving skills.

“Okay Lanette.” Pip said slowly and they hopped down the bank to wade into the water. “You’re going to want to clear this, but you need to be careful, but these will hurt you, okay? See?” They reached out to one of the vines and showed them the prickles, miming sticking themselves on it and making an exaggerated gesture of pain.

Lanette looked at them disapprovingly as they did so, maybe thinking they actually hurt themselves, and nudged her trainer out of the way with her big head. She carefully approached the obstruction while keeping her fins and face clear of anything that might hurt her. After nudging some of the areas experimentally, she moved to the edge of the river and water blasting the plants with pressurized water. She used the water gun to dislodge the stuck parts of the plant, and push it up onto the bank where it would be out of the way, as well as break up any pieces that stayed in the water to prevent it from getting caught and causing additional obstructions farther down stream.

She looked up at Pip smugly, and they gave her a head pat and a treat before scrambling out of the water again. Little Guy had gotten quite excited to see their trainer in the water and looked like he was about to try and drag Pip into the rough housing he had been engaging in with Lanette. Literal nightmare scenario.
