Whatever Mezzo had seen seemed to be of some particular interest to it, as it started bouncing around excitedly, trying to get Pip’s attention. It already had Pip’s attention, but the ruckus also go the pikachu’s attention – as the sound had woken him and startled him so badly that he tried to scramble up Pip’s neck and into their hair! They quickly corralled the frazzled creature and deposited it onto the ground, calling Little Guy over to try and keep him calm and contained while Pip followed up with Mezzo.

The chingling has found what seemed to be some kind of nest – or at least, a resting spot – for a bird pokemon of some variety. There were marks clawed into the bark, and some feathers scattered about. They gathered up some of the feathers into a baggy and pulled out their notebook to start jotting down some of the particulars. Pip had even brought a little tape measure for exactly this kind of situation, and used it to measure the width and spacing of the claw marks.

Avien pokemon weren’t their area of expertise, but perhaps this information would help the people who’s expertise it was narrow down what species might call this place home!

You hear a tussle, and just catch a glimpse of something disappearing towards the river while something else scurries into the underbrush.

Pip and Posse began their journey back the way they came, thankfully making the trip without any significant problems. When they got back to the river, Pip carefully packed their clothing and boots back into their waterproof bag. They returned the pikachu to it’s pokeball (being that it couldn’t cross the river itself and Pip didn’t want to worry about carrying it) and slipped into the water. The current was strong, but nothing Pip wasn’t prepared to deal with.

Little Guy loved that Pip was finally in the water with him (something Pip almost flatly refused to be, most of the time) and took the opportunity to dash playfully around them. It made Pip a little nervous, but he was being very well behaved, so Pip playing with him a bit and went through a few swimming drills with him while they were there. Everything was fine until they reached the other side, and Pip moved to start getting out of the water.

Little Guy had gotten a bit over excited about Pip being in their element, and was sad that their trainer was leaving without playing with them properly! He swam up and bit down on the free edge of Pip’s swim trunks, trying to tug them back into the water and back to playing. Pip felt the tug and their heart immediately lurched up into their throat, remembering all of the times they had been pulled under the water by playful pokemon in the past.

The teal-haired trainer rounded on the totodile and gave them a sharp and immediate reprimand! “No!” They said firmly, clutching the fabric of their trunks and taking and using their free hand to haul themselves and the 20lb pokemon up against the bank. “Drop it! Bad!”

Little Guy immediately released their trainer and darted back into the water a few feet, looking startled and sad. He hadn’t realized he was doing anything bad! He just wanted to play! He chittered sadly, and Pip sighed. “It’s okay buddy, but don’t do it again.”

Unfortunately, Mezzo, who had been investigating something on the far bank while the other two had been messing around in the water, didn’t get the message that everything was fine and had only seen that it’s trainer had been in distress! It zoomed over and began to immediately start harassing Little Guy, who darted back below the water to avoid it’s attacking team mate.

“Hey! Hey! Knock it off Mezzo!” Pip hurried to pull themselves out of the water, and grab both Little Guy and Mezzo’s balls from their belt, immediately recalling both of them. “Probably for the best if everyone has a little alone time. Pip sighed again and brought themselves to their feet. They slipped their sandals back on and pulled the towel out their bag for a cursory dry before they pulled their shirt back on.

“Everything was going so well too…” They lamented, as they got ready to make the last (admittedly fairly short) leg of the trip by themselves. As they prepared to leave however, they heard a rustling in the bushes behind them! Their hand moved back to Little Guy’s ball, prepared to summon him if the need arose, when a shape darted out from the shrubbery and started waddling towards the water!

It was a chinchou! Pip had always thought chinchou were very cute little things, but they were very glad that they had gotten out of the water before it had shown up. Untrained or frightened chinchou had an unfortunate tendency to electrocute people in the water with them. Its little glowing antenna made it very easy to keep track of in the gloomy light of the forest, and it didn’t seem to be aware Pip was there, which made it a relatively easy matter to line up a shot with one of the research balls they were carrying.

The ball hit its mark, and, after a moment, the little chinchou was caught! Pip walked over to retrieve the ball, feeling quite pleased with themselves. They were getting the hang of this pokemon catching thing.

… of course, the universe chose to punish Pip’s unspoken boastfulness. Not two minutes after they had so skillfully captured the chinchou, another pokemon ran out of the underbrush. It was another Nauwillian Poliwag, like the one they had captured during their expedition with Tori!

Pip fumbled in their pocket for another research ball. When they pulled one free, they lost their grip on it and it almost went flying into the brush, but they knocked it back with their other hand. They spent a few moments like that, accidentally fumbling it back and forth between their hands, before they got a solid grip on it. By then the poliwag was just about drive off the embankment and into the water.

Since there was no time left to try and line up their shot, they simply hucked it at the creature and hoped for the best. Unfortunately, their sport of choice was swimming, not baseball. The ball sailed straight over the creature, which jumped into the water with barely a splash and disappeared under the current. A moment later the (empty) ball hit the water with a soft ‘plunk’ and started drifting down with the flow of the river.

Pip stared after it for a moment, before realizing it was moving much faster than they would be able to catch it, so they took off running along the bank and pulled Little Guy’s ball from their belt! They summoned him onto the land, and it only took him a moment to get his barring and start running alongside his trainer. Of course, his tiny little lags couldn’t keep up with Pip’s, but Pip wasn’t expecting him to run with him on land. They pointed at the empty ball, floating away. “Fetch that!”

Little Guy chittered excitedly and jumped back in the water – all memory of the earlier encounter forgotten in favour of this new game. Once in the water he was much faster than Pip and it only took him a moment to catch up to the wayward ball.

Wayward research ball obtained, Little Guy returned to his trainer to return his prize. Pip rewarded him with plenty of skritches and snuggles, picking them up to carry them back out of the woods (a turn of events Little Guy was thrilled with). The adventure had started off well, but it had certainly taken a shift for the awkward at the end. They spied another bird-pokemon nest and some more oran berries on the way out, so they let Little Guy down to have a treat while they took some more samples, but otherwise didn’t doddle, and soon they were safely back on their way to turn in what they had found.
