Expedition Area: Area 002 - Darksallow Valley (Beginner)

The pop-culture definition of insanity is trying the same thing multiple times, and expecting a different result. By that definition, Pip was insane. Tori wasn’t far behind them. This was their third venture into these woods, and after the last two they really shouldn’t have been this eager to go back. Thankfully, after their previous trip’s… challenges… they were better prepared.

The pair made it a whole ten minutes away from the cave without any trouble! They avoided falling into any unexpected pit traps, having their chinglings one-shot by wurmple, or stumbling into patches of stinging nettle. They also hadn’t accomplished much by way of the research the various island organizations were looking for, but Pip still figured this was a good start.

They eyed a nearby shrubbery in case it started moving, while the newly-named Mezzo chased specks of dust that were highlighted in the beams of light coming down through the canopy. It felt too calm. They didn’t trust it.

By mutual agreement Tori and Pip had remained alert and quiet for the first steps out of the cavern that stood as the entrance to Darksallow Valley. Both of them had picked up a few extra supplies and neither wanted the expedition to end quite as fast as the last had. It was past the ten minute mark which is where the last expedition had gotten before they had to turn back and when Pip paused to eye a bush Tori beamed at them.

Breaking the silence, Tori kept watch in the opposite direction. "This is already so much better than last time!" Caspian, who had been keeping pace with her, let out a soft chime at the happy tone in her voice. "Should we stick to slightly deeper in the forest or did you want to move closer to the river?" Neither would keep them from falling into muddy pits if they lay hidden under the leaves covering the forest floor.

The bush didn’t move. Pip squinted at it harder. It still didn’t move. They nodded subtly, mostly to themselves, and moved on to the next patch of trees on their designated side of the path.

Pip had settled into the silence so well that Tori’s cheerful voice almost made them jump out of their skin!... They were probably, just a little bit, too worked up right now. They looked over their shoulder to return Tori’s bright smile with a more sheepish one of their own. “It is possible we may have just had… extraordinary bad luck last time.”

They doubted it. These woods were definitely haunted.

The next patch of trees on their side of the path revealed a patch of oran berries! They didn’t have a good way of carrying any for later, but they picked a couple and held them up so the chinglings could take one for a little treat (they looked at Tori for conformation that Caspian could have one, intending to ditch them both if the answer was no – they didn’t want to spark any problems between the two little mon).

Pip thought about her question for a moment. “We should probably stick closer to the river.” Harder to get lost that way, they didn’t say out loud. Even if they were pretty sure they were acting a bit too on edge, they still weren’t about to take any unnecessary risks. “I’m curious what kind of water types might live in it. And most pokemon need water, even if they don’t live in it, so I think it might give us good odds of seeing what else is here too…”

Startled Pokémon​ The characters scare pokémon out of hiding. Roll 1-100 and determine which pokémon you've found from the area's chart; all players find the same pokémon, so only one person needs to roll. Each player is allowed to roll one character's DEX + their choice of ball's Catch Score vs the event's difficulty in order to try and catch one.

Ooo, berries. Caspian swooped closer to scoop up one of the plump offerings Pip held as Tori nodded at Pips inquiring glance. Caspian was more than welcome to any of the fruits they could find. As long as there weren't an over abundance of them, they would just be a nice snack.

With Pips answer, Tori turned towards the river. Not more than a few steps forward as they approached the bank she heard a surprised sort of sound and then something familiar was rushing past her feet. It was so close it ran over her feet as it tried to flee them.

"Ah! Poliwag" She cried, fumbling for a dusk ball to throw at it. It swerved at the last moment and avoided her ball but another flew from behind her and nailed it. Ecstatic, Tori spun around to clap for Pip.

"You caught it! Congratulations!!" Tori had heard about the strange looking Poliwag but she hasn't seen it. The impression she got was green. "Looks like the choice of river was a good one!"

Several of the trees here seem to have deep holes in their sides... Success reveals feathers and claw marks indicate this area is a sleeping spot for some kind of avian pokemon.

Unusual Terrain The players discover an unusual feature of the area. Each player may roll one character's INS + Clever vs the event's difficulty. If at least one character succeeds, then the characters document enough information about the feature to help the researchers back at Doveport and gain +1 research at the end of the adventure. Any mention of success only reveals the sort of discovery it is for roleplay purposes.

As they carried on past the river, they were a bit distracted by Mezzo, who had decided that it wanted to play again. Its favourite game was holding Pip’s hand while they swung it gently back and forth, before letting go and letting the momentum send it flying for a few feet before coming back for another go. The little chingling had just launched itself from Pip’s fingers when something ran straight across their and Tori’s feet!

Pip only really processed a blur of green and the feel of slimy skin brushing up against their leg as they reached into their pocket for one of the pokeballs they were carrying. They didn’t even really register which one it was before they yeeted it at one of the pokemon. There was a flash of light as it made contact, a moment where it looked like it might break back out… and then… a click as it settled.

For a moment Pip just stared dumbly at it. That was not one of the research balls. That was the nest ball that they had purchased on a whim that morning. That was their ball. That ball now contain a pokemon. They caught a pokemon!

Mezzo floated over to chime curiously at it and Pip followed them to pick it up. They hadn’t even seen what it was, really, they’d just acted on impulse! Tori had said it was a poliwag? That certainly hadn’t really looked like a poliwag they were used to – at least, as much as they saw it at all. They supposed it must be another regional variant. Their mother would be absolutely thrilled to hear that they–

Then it struck them.

They had just caught their first pokemon, ever.

And it was a water type.

Of course it was a water type.

They still couldn’t help the slightly silly grin that spread across their face. They just caught a pokemon!

Pip moved to the side a bit (just so they were a bit farther away from the river bank and any potential cave-in-under-you weak points) still looking at the newly occupied pokeball in their hands. They smiled and nodded at Tori. “Thanks! I guess it was?” They chuckled a bit awkwardly. “I suppose I should probably wait until we get back to town before I take it out to get a better look at it.”

They carefully attached the pokemon to their belt, and was about to signal that they should start moving on again when they noticed something weird about the tree they were now positioned next to. “Hey, check this out. Have you seen any bird pokemon around here that these might belong to?” They asked Tori, gesturing to the claw marks and feathers.

"I mean, you could always take it out to just give it a look over! You can always recall it really fast if it freaks out." Admittedly, Tori wanted to get a better look at the poliwag too, but it worked out pretty well for Eulalio when they caught the tangel. Though if Pip really didn't want to bring out the new pokemon, Tori wasn't going to push.

Seeing the goofy grin that Pip was sporting, Tori couldn't help but give them an even brighter smile. "Was that the first pokemon you've caught?" she couldn't help but ask. The look they'd had was the same as many of the new pokemon trainers who stopped at her mom's pokecenter. If it wasn't, Tori was going to be even more surprised, but maybe Pip was just always excited about catching new pokemon.

Right as Pip mentioned it, Tori also caught sight of the feathers and claw marks on a nearby tree. Looking around more carefully, she saw enough that it was a safe bet that something slept here often enough to leave marks.

"I haven't seen anything like that could make these marks before, not yet." Peering at the underbrush around the tree, she saw another patch of oran berries. "Something must come here to eat and sleep often enough, there's some berries down here," she squatted down to retrieve a couple. Offering up one to Caspian, she offered one to Pip's chingling as well. "I'm sure if we keep looking around we can find that bird type though!"
