Familiars

With many familiars starting out as nothing more than normal animals, the leaking of magic from the death of many dragons had a strange effect on the wildlife. Being more susceptible to the changes of magic than people, many of the animals began to change. A lot of this manifested as changes to the coloring and markings on the pelts, having normal animals that were touched by magic able to roam free on Vigala for the first time. Wizards began to notice that familiars were harder to bond with and it wasn't until they found the strange ones that they were able to establish links with them, but they were not the only ones. It seemed that all classes were able to exert some amount of will over the magic touched creatures and create bonds. This opened the flood gates for all adventurers to gain familiars of their own.

All familiars may communicate telepathically with their bonded at no further than 100 feet. They may also communicate with other bonded familiars or other animals like them at the same distance. Their bonded may dismiss them back into a demi plane (a pocket dimension, kind of like pokemon) at any time. Having more than one familiar out at a time can be done, however, if is very taxing on the bonded and may manifest as their magic or body being too weak to fight. Only Wizards seem to be able to have three familiars out at once without it waning their abilities.

Cats have always been used as Wizards' familiars, once upon a time they were the most popular option, but as things have changed so has the tradition. It's now pretty common to see other household pets becoming infused with magic enough for all classes to call upon them. Some cats may be vain enough to hate this change, while others find it an opportunity to share the work load.

It isn't all that common for dogs to have been used as Wizards' familiars, but as things have changed so has the tradition. It's now pretty common to see household pets becoming infused with magic enough for all classes to call upon them. Dogs have become very popular as a replacement for more traditional familiars.

Name: Kitsune
Size: 25 to 40 inches length (without tail) and 18-25 inches in height
Weight: 22 to 35 pounds
Battle Bonus: +1 to Int or +1 to Wis (Choice)
Lines: Yorugami

Kitsune are thought to have come about in a very similar way as the Corshryn. They are animal spirits that have somehow gained enough power and sentience to become corporeal when the world went through it's magical change. They can talk telepathically to any creature within 100 feet of them, rather bonded or not. They can also move so stealthily as to be nearly completely unseen. They can see spirits and talk with them, or at least so they say. Kitsune are thought to be incredibly wise and intelligent, though it's unsure if they're all that way or if they are perhaps simply arrogant. It seems that many have a wide range of personalities and traits, though they do have a bad reputation for being mischievous at the worst of times and protective at the best.

Weight: 4-10 pounds

It isn't all that common for rabbits to have been used as Wizards' familiars, though they had been used as roadside attractions, but as things have changed so has the tradition. It's now pretty common to see household pets becoming infused with magic enough for all classes to call upon them. Rabbits are usually docile and unassuming, and so they have gained a foothold to be used for deception or for some who just really love cute and fuzzy things.

It isn't all that common for rats to have been used as Wizards' familiars, but as things have changed so has the tradition. It's now pretty common to see household pets becoming infused with magic enough for all classes to call upon them. Rats have become rather popular with those who want to remain unseen and have always been a suitable pet for urchins, sailors or others who need something quick and independent. Still, there are others who find them adorable and collect rats for that reason!

Most ravens don't seem to care one way or another that other animals are now being called upon, as long as they are fed and free to do as they like, who cares? Though, a lot of them to do find it fun to tease the felines who seem up in fur about it.

Name: Tressym
Size: 1 1/2 feet to 2 1/2 feet in length (without tail) and 10-18 inches in height
Weight: 15 to 25 pounds
Battle Bonus: +1 to Int or +1 to Dex (Choice)
Lines: Circus of Values and Koiasi

Tressym are magical creatures resembling a slightly larger than normal domestic cat with wings. It's said that they were created by Wizards by combining a cat with either an owl or bat and some other magical beast that has been kept a secret, so secret, in fact, that new Wizards have no knowledge on how exactly to create them. Tressym are not only able to fly, they are able to detect poisons and see invisible creates that are up to 90 feet (27 meters). They have more intelligence than is seen in normal cats, able to easily communicate with gestures and fully understand common though unable to speak it. Some argue that they might even be more intelligent than the average person. They are able to fully see in darkness as well as low-light.
