What are Providences?
In essence, Providence is a school of magic.
Providence refers to the rewriting and/or attuning of energy to a specific harmonic of creation. For an Endless creature, this basically means attuning a part of their very existence to a particular fount (or source) of power, allowing them to create and manipulate that particular energy in various ways.
Once properly attuned, a creature from the Void may slowly over time become more linked to the particular sphere of power, in essence levelling up their ability to utilize it. This does, of course, mean they have to be careful not to eventually rewrite their entire existence with that one particular essence, though – something that others have done before them, whether in greed or simple neglect.
Most Endless races have an innate understanding of how their born Providence work and lack the necessity of practice a human does, but attempting to deharmonize with it would likely warp their existence enough that they'd be unable to master another.
Due to their own unique harmonious balance, with enough skill and practice humans can utilize multiple Providences. Thus, for a human, mastering a Providence involves learning to momentarily attune themselves to some aspect of creation. One potential drawback for humanity, however, is their natural inability to conceive of or access these founts. In order to ‘tap in’, one must be exposed to it directly – typically via meeting another race, or being shown and explained usage by another human in contact. Humans also have the potential downside of needing to train in every aspect of controlling their harmonization; they have no sort of innate talent as the other races might.
Many humans don’t understand energy harmonics at all despite being able to harmonize with a Providence, and have only memorized those actions and rituals that allow them to tap into a particular action in a particular way. Those becoming truly aware and experienced with Providence, however, no matter their race, typically begin to craft their own ‘spells’, widening the community for the novice, much to certain teacher’s chagrins.
While a Providence could be anything, its powers must relate to that Providence in a justifiable way. A practitioner of the Providence of Emotion wouldn't be able to directly injure someone with their magic, and a caster from the Providence of Death wouldn't be able to create new life. A Providence of Plastic Bowls would be exceptionally esoteric, but … they'd be able to create whatever plastic bowls you could ever want.
Typically, these narrower spheres are encapsulated under larger Providences, such as Creation or Craft for the bowls, but it is, yes, entirely possible to attune to extremely narrow and specific aspects of reality.

What if the Providence my character wants to join doesn’t exist?
Please fill out this form and post into this very thread:
If approved, players can establish a new Providence by undergoing a quest, writing or drawing a series of things that represent their character tapping into the Providence. In exchange, you will get to help set guidelines for and your three powers in that Providence will become the first ever created. Depending on your level of input, and your applying character’s concepts, your character may be promoted to a high level mage.
