Admittedly, The Lady Hellebore Grace was not one for such events - Haunted Houses, Circus Entertainment or Festival Games, but she had recently been through a change; a softening of the heart, eyes opening to the world around her and its wonders.

The truth of the matter was - Persephone had brought such kindness and light into her life, and there was so much love and joy in the tiny pixie child that it was inevitable that Hellebore would be won over by her.

It was a peculiar feeling - to look forward optimistically to the fairground goings ons, to participate and feel the bubbling of fun.

It was also a very vulnerable feeling that had, in the end, left her feeling indignant.

It had started in the haunted house, really, when she had gotten into the spirit of the game, understanding that the vampire was an actor, and thinking to join in on the fun and spice up the adventure, she'd declared her worth and challenged the vampire to do so also, in order to draw his notice for some of the children interested in peeking into his coffin - it had been poorly received, however, and she'd distinctly heard the biting remark, "Jerk" and had withdrawn into herself, instead choosing to move in silence beside Persephone through the rest of the haunted house.

She made sure to encourage Persephone's excitement, to smile when she was called to, but she did not actively seek to engage. She was perhaps too old for silly adventures like these and would know better the next year.

Then there was the embarrassment of the Strength Testing game - her little pixie had hit the bell at the top and won the ultimate prize! In her pride and a rare moment of jubilance, her tails had gotten away from her usual stoic control, wagging lightly, one tapping the platform, and much to her embarrassment, she was provided the Participation Prize for the lowest possible score.

Oh, the Indignity.

So it was, Lady Grace was passively quiet. She had won a few small trinkets, some specter tickets - the Circus drew her in - the lights, the sounds, but now, she felt hesitation and doubt creeping in; it was heavy and dark and it replaced the wonder she'd felt seeping in before.

Her thoughts went back to the end of the haunted house - the bizarre pony who'd spoken to them, who's feet faded into nothing, the suspicious arrival and distinct discomfort in the Ring Leader. There was something hidden here - something dark.

Or perhaps it was all part of the story, and she was reading too much into it.

It felt strange - not to be confident in her thoughts; let alone for her to wonder about the wellbeing of a stranger. These were things that did not often give her cause for hesitation; not in many moons. Surely the last time she had felt such uncertainty she had been Persephone's size. That had truly been a long time ago.

Why couldn't she figure this out? What was she missing?

Could she help?
