Entry:

Ax didn’t celebrate Christmas. If they thought too hard about it, they might have actually hated the whole thing. But it had been good for sales, they told themself firmly. Hand-crafted knickknacks and second-hand upcycled furniture had been at a premium this season, and Ax had done pretty well for themselves selling in their kooky store, packed to the brim with anything and everything they made or found or both.

As they locked up the shop, pulling down the shutters and clicking the alarm system on, Ax looked upwards, to the stars. It was difficult to make them about above the light pollution fo the city, one of the (very few) things Ax missed about living out in the hicks. Still, as they squinted, they could just about make some out, and a smile ghosted across their face.

They might hate christmas, secretly, but there was always thing to enjoy about the season. Ax hummed to themself as they bopped to some tunes on their way home, one earphone in and the other out. Just in-case. They raised a hand to others they recognised shutting up shop, and stopped halfway home to invite Janey to the gathering on their roof, tonight. She declined, as Ax expected, but they came to an Ax-insistent compromise that she took twenty bucks and one of their thermos’s - she chose soup, rather than hot chocolate.

The other thermos’s soon ran out by the time he’d got home. They hadn’t invited the others, didn’t know them well enough yet, but they’d doled out advice and thermos’ and the overflow from the till in equal measure, and also their coat to one particularly cold looking lady. It’s alright, they had spares - buying in bulk from the local surplus store was annoying to store, but it helped Ax out in other ways.

Ax headed up to their apartment, unlocking the stairwell as they did so. Technically what they were doing was illegal, but honestly as long as the rent got paid and they didn’t wreck the place, the landlord - a lovely but terrifying old lady with as many cats as Ax wished they could have - didn’t care. She was ‘unaware’ of Ax’s activities, of course - gatherings on the roof? Obviously residents gathering to celebrate the season. Nothing more.

They picked up the tin of cookies she’d made for the gathering and smiled. Each one had been iced carefully in warm colours, and beneath the cookies was another package of gloves and scarves - hand knitted it looked like, but they could have been store bought and it wouldn’t matter - the people Ax had invited would appreciate them, and if they didn’t fit they’d pass them on.

Ax never mentioned the gloves and scarves in their thankyou note - after all, what use would residents have for them. No, they thanked her for the cookies only, and included a tiny feline ornament (hand fired, glazed and painted) wearing a tiny scarf.

The gathering was many things. A chance for people to remember those who couldn’t make it this year, for good or for ill. A chance for hot food and drink (non-alcoholic only, Ax was strict on that) for those who couldn’t get it elsewhere (shelters were notoriously hard to get into on the regular, and even moreso during the festive season.), and a chance, Ax silently admitted to himself, to catch up with friends who had helped them out when they were worse off.

Sam’s sharp but gap-toothed smile, Ellie’s thin hands that shook and shook but were so delicate when applying makeup. Jay’s beard was even starting to look impressive instead of scraggly now, which was a source of jokes from the rest of them. Names and faces blurred a little, later in the evening, as time wore on. Not from alcohol, Ax had learnt that lesson, but more from genuine joy and also maybe the fact they hadn’t slept in a while. They drifted off with Ellie’s shaking hands brushing out their hair, pillowed on Sam’s chest, slurring their words because of tiredness as they tried to convince Jay to glitter their beard.

In the morning the others had to leave early ; to stake out the best spots, or gather their belongings before a sweep came. Ax surfaced badly each time someone left what could charitably be called the pile of bodies, only to be soothed by whoever was left.

Ellie, who left last and still too early, gently pressed a chaste kiss onto their wrist.

“Thanks, Ax. For everything.”

Blurrily, they mumbled something back - probably something too truthful, judging by the pinched look on Ellie’s face, and the way she hugged them tight before lockiing the door as she left.

Ax slipped back into sleep - for once their mind quiet and content.

In this essay, I will...
Character: Oliver Pending
Entry:
He waved to his neighbors and unlocked his door, gently pushing Godzilla back inside with a foot as the cat attempted to make a run for it. "No, you stay inside." He shut the door, slipped off his shoes and went to change his uniform.

Wearing a ugly sweater and jeans, and fuzzy socks, Oliver went around feeding Mothman and Godzilla, gave them both a early Christmas gift in the form of catnip mice. He wasn't usually one to wear ugly sweaters but it was a rule now. Hollin had gotten into the trend and pulled in their dad and now it was mandatory, ugly sweater or no spiced cider. He wanted that cider. He deserved to get buzzed.

He gathered the gifts for his dad and siblings and left again, making sure that both cats remained in the apartment and didn't attempt another escape attempt. He locked up and headed down and to the bus stops.

His dad's townhouse wasn't in the best area but it was decent, the area worn down and the people getting buy and well, his dad could afford it on his pension. Which was the most important part. There was a scattering of toys and a half ass attempt of Christmas lights. Oliver was pretty sure his dad went out to his younger siblings prompting, spent about an hour or until Locket got bored and Devlin cold and then went, ehh, good enough and went back inside. A wreath was outside the door which was likely the only thing that was straight.

He knocked on the door and attempted to dodge his father's bear hug and missed. He grumbled as his hair was promptly ruffled and pretty much pulled inside. It smelled food, likely ordered out from one of the grannies in the neighborhood.

"Oli!" Oliver smiled as his sister tackled into his leg, hair a mass of black curls and pigtials and wearing a oversize red dress with faux fur. "Hey Locket." He said, picking up the child and walked in father. Hollin had taken over the couch, Devlin sprawled on her lap as he picked up cars and held it up to her babbling away.

"Nice Sweater!"

"Bite me." He called, flipping his sister off, father laughing behind him as he headed towards the food. "What you say, Lolly? Shall we raid the dessert table."

"Chocolate!"

"I take that as a yes."

In this essay, I will...
Character: Lucien Desmarais
Entry:

For one particular sanjaru, the season meant a time of change. Not just for the memories of arrival, though it was most definitely the cooler months of the year when he arrived – scared and fleeing to a world he knew nothing of. It was true he was shaken still when his thoughts turned as they had during those five years, that time when his clan, small and far more docile than the uproarious leadership of those who fought for control of the newfound portal as it was, had been decimated by those ravenous and cowardly toward the change they whispered of. It was truer that he’d been the last of ten that survived.

No, it wasn’t just those teetering moments in which he’d turned tail and fled, spurned on by familiar voices as they urged him to run, to press on, or the ones after that found him tumbling legs over tail, suddenly upon solid ground and filled with bones and teeth and organs and SKIN that flooded the broodier soul with pain and regret that he could not do more. It was no longer a time to remind himself of the grim duties he’d shouldered so willingly. A time to renew his quiet vows of revenge and stoke the embers of war in a heart that had been consumed by it; a true sanjari in his own way.

It was more than that now, he’d been reminded forcefully. He’d been caught so unawares, the loud thump and following smirk he’d been given by a certain black and red bug that fluttered in, full of laughs and jibes and whose cocky attitude as usual meant a successful report would ensue, and for all of that he’d been thrown into a sudden sea of emotions by the broody creature that trailed behind, carrying the scent of gore that his senses would never allow him to forget.

“Welcome back.” he called to the pair, not allowing the tumult of bittersweet emotion to creep into sullen tone … though he could scarce help the quiet laughter that ensued once the pair took sight of the large tree, whose existence remained despite the year’s end and whose colourful trimmings and varied lights had been exchanged for the warm white of fairy string.

“It was their idea,” Lucien offered, gesturing toward the lounge area where the bubbly girl and her laughing friend exchanged stories beyond. “… it’s nice, isn’t it? A nice change. We can keep it up all year this way.”

In this essay, I will...
Character: Violet [Pending Newb]
Entry:

“Oh come on. It’s really not much or whatever. It’s fine. Just take it okay?”

Violet thrust the small, lovingly-wrapped box not into waiting hands but onto a smooth counter. His reflection leered back at him as he glanced up toward it not for the first time, and with a muttering curse it smoothed a hand through meticulously groomed hair.

“… not even for the third.” he grumbled aloud to himself as a moment later his hand met his face in disgust – careful still to not disturb the makeup he’d spent extra time perfecting that morning.

Perfect. Right. Everything had to be perfect. It was the perfect time, the perfect day, the perfect holiday … the perfect excuse. It wasn’t like he gave much of a shit about Christmas, or whatever holiday anyone argued over the existence of, especially not after the bullshit greetings and nostalgic quotes and polls and phrases and just, all of the garbage he’d had to come up with the whole month really – but it wasn’t like he wouldn’t use it to his advantage, either.

It was just the perfect time to get closer, wasn’t it? It wasn’t like he didn’t notice the way he was being stared at sometimes, or the way Archie’s mouth twitched into that little smile when their eyes met after he walked in. The way his eyes got a little wider when he said ‘hey’.

Or at least he really hoped he wasn’t reading all those signs the wrong way.

Was he being a fucking loser?

“Come on just give it to him you idiot.” he told his reflection again, this time with his hand splayed against the cool glass. “He probably thinks you fucking fell in already.”

Some jackass had tried to turn the knob twice already; didn’t they know he was in there? Really, he needed to get his shit together …

In this essay, I will...
Character: Remi Lavigne
Entry:

Remi drew back from his date of the evening, the man’s face transfixed with shock and fear as the blood, seized as it had become in his veins, already began to chill. Another one – dog haters all of them; for what was rapidly approaching two years it had been a private test, something that had started as not much more than a joke on his part, but the more that happened the more he was certain – at least some part of it was true.

After spending so much time with one of the alliosa he considered his closest friends, he was certain dog-haters made great food.

“What, can’t get a date for the new year?” he laughed, cutting eyes at the not-quite-pooch curled up on their shared sofa, his head on one paw and the other hand – human – on the remote. So typical.

“All of my holiday shit sold out. That’s great, right? He was so right again.”

He – heh. He didn’t need to be mentioned by name; their mutual, Archie’s boss, the guy that let a lonely grimm like him be part of their pack. He’d always helped him out, was the true and honest reason he was an upcoming, trendy designer to date; always offered honest opinions and always gave open suggestions. So reliable, so …

“How’s he always so right on everything? You know? It’s like he can read your mind or something~”

With a derisive snort, Remi sank down onto the inviting sofa beside his friend, and in the next moment long fingers met furry scalp for a series of warm, drawn-out scritches. It was so funny then, to think that his roommate hated the offered affection at first – even more to consider how frightened the supposed vampire dog was when they first moved in.

Was he really that scary?

“Wanna watch the countdown together?” the grimm mused idly, shrugging nonchalantly.

“You know, after we clean up that mess?”

The year would die that night, and another, better, would rise to take its place.

It was odd, this celebration. Lore was still getting her legs under her in the six months she had been on the earth. Getting use to the weather and the people and the food and the weird cultural significances. Like football. Some reason the people were really into the game where two rival warrior clans? Attempted to beat each other up for a ball. She still didn't get football.

This celebration though had been confusing but fun. It was wake up and put up lights, and then kill a tree and put lights and sparkly baubles on it, then then put up more lights, and make cookies shaped like people to give as gifts and to eat. They tasted like ginger and nutmeg and it was so spicy and good and she like the food. Even if it did nothing. She had spent most of the day cooking with her foster family, making all the dishes traditional for Christmas dinner and it was a lot and there was so many more people then she expected.

She hummed as she cooked, she couldn't really get anything out of it, but the amount of emotions and excitement made it easy to snack on as she work. There was something about presents being talked about by the younger ones and she wasn't too sure but they sure was shiny!

"Elenore! Elenore! Come over here."

She paused in her stirring of the gravy, glancing at her mother? Human families were weird and at her nod and shooing, cleaned her hands and went to the family room. "Yes?"

"Come here honey, we are going to start with the movie. This would be the first time you seen it right?" Her 'grandma?' she was pretty sure that what the elderly women had been introduced as.

She glanced at the screen, reading the word. Klaus. "No, is it good?" She questioned, smoothing her skirts forward as she sat down on the couch, captured by the tv. It looked like it should be a cartoon or an anime and she really like the way they told stories!

"Very."

Had it really been another year? The time had some and gone, it had been a couple years ago now that Darling had arrived on earth. this winter they had spent the holidays with the orphans at the nearest orphanage where the first kids he met had grown up at, and either got adopted or become old enough to care for themselves, it had become quite a tradition to visit kids there and leave them gifts every inter, hand made blankets, and stuffed animals or dresses for dolls, but now another year was passing and a new one was about to begin.

The clock counted down as Darling made their usual preparation for the coming months, birthdays, shop stocking, so much to do so little time, they where lucky it was still December but soon they would need to reopen shop come January. Darling ate a few snacks as they began to wonder what the children where doing and if they where eating or enjoying the new year, they set down the needle on their lap and looked around, Darling had a bit of human cash and coin tucked away, grabbing the project they had on their lap as they put it up for the time being and dug around in their hide away, cluttered with antiques and projects Darling pulled out the money they had, collectively it was about 150$ left over from the sales they had maid and what they had spent on Christmas for the kids. taking what they had they went to the nearest store still open before closing and bought a few things. it wasn't much due to their size they could only carry a box of pastries.and headed to the orphanage.

upon arrival they took the kids to the balcony with blankets and the pastries making sure they where dressed warmly for the new years firework show and the sound of the town counting down the end of the years in unison. As the new year rang in Darling wished for all the children in the orphanage to find happy and loving homes one day before sharing the pastries they had brought with all the children, maybe darling would do this again next year as-well, besides it wasn't every day children like them could exuberance such grate things with someone who cared.

In this essay, I will...
Character: Lafayette
Entry:
"Hurry on up 'ere, Bas. We gotta get home 'fore dark; ain't gonna hear the end of it none if we don't. Luce said 'e got some kinna surprise or somethin', n' ya know how 'e gets 'bout that shit."

The lanky creature's words were urging, but calm all the same as he hoisted himself up on the edge of a ratty counter; a moment later saw long fingers digging into a rough pocket in search of a source of fire, and several more followed with a satisfied curl of acrid smoke twisting through the air before him. It was such an odd pleasure, one that he still didn't understand - it wouldn't hurt him, his body being unnatural and resistant to the threat of cancers and deterioration (after all, couldn't he simply shift such damage away?), but the humans had no such safety net. Why did they wreck themselves over a brief spike of moderate enjoyment?

Why indeed, thought one Lafayette Fontenot, curling one leg up to rest his heel on the edge of the same space he'd seated on. His eyes wandered towards the small window of the dingy apartment, focusing on the sliver of grey sky he could see over the water-stained privacy fence; the sounds of his companion getting to work fell on deaf ears as he considered it further. Why would anyone risk themselves for something so entirely unnecessary, no matter how satisfying it might have been? Why would anyone risk their safety for a smile?

The corner of his lips turned upward, and the sanjaru took another drag from his cigarette.

It was all ridiculous. Every part of it, every aspect of this life, this existence, was so alien and contrary to his very nature. It hadn't been at first, of course - killing just to survive, scraping out an existence in a world that didn't particularly care if he lived or died... that was natural, wasn't it? Eating game that had no idea they weren't the top of their food chain, wallowing in their excess and greedily consuming everything he could for himself... Even that little bug that followed him around had only been a convenience - an easy way to dispose of evidence in a hurry.

Had been. Heh.

"Hey, watch-- goddamnit Bas. Look, ya fuckin' -- these're my new fuckin' pants. M'I not allowed t'have one goddamn... no, shut up, finish 'em off. Don't act like yer not hungry enough t'eat 'em both."

He sighed, finding himself not as annoyed as he would have once been by the new stain. Sure, it was his first day wearing the damn things, but at least his partner was getting the job done in a hurry, just like he'd asked. There was a sink nearby, and with a grumble the disgruntled Endless slid off the edge that he might hoist his leg up to it and maybe get the gore off before it set in. Of course, that meant he'd have a wet leg, but...

It was funny, really. He couldn't be as angry as he'd been, once. It just wasn't in him anymore. How could he be angry when he had so much to do? How could he be pissed when he knew ...

How could he risk himself when he knew he had someone relying on him? He couldn't upset the balance of the little life he'd found for himself in this alien world. After all, if he did, then he couldn't continue endangering himself by caring for someone else, could he?

"You 'bout done over there? I still gotta grab a bag or somethin' for that thing I got 'fore we head home."

Maybe he wouldn't even complain about the decorations, tonight.

Entry: Hobb disliked this month. He disliked winter in general, it was too cold and the air was harder to move in. This month though, this month was the worst as the two legged giants that live here were just out in force and they didn't seem to stop. Or shut up.

Hobb grumbled, going through the various trash cans and content to leave everything he didn't want outside of the containers. Trash trash, tasty, trash... ooh dead stinky thing. Maybe? He prod the rat with his tail a few times to make sure before setting it aside and kept digging. He grumbled and nope.. time to move on.

He scooped up the dead rat in his tail and scrambled up the roof. Birds? No, nothing was up here. He grumbled and kept going, scurrying on all fours and jumped onto the next ledge, nosing around. No, noo yes! A pretty pretty dead bird. So pretty. It was red and they should like these.

He knew where he was going, he headed towards the building, scurrying up the wall and peered into the window. Here? Here? Yes! Hiii Hi Blair! Hobb pounded on the window panel, making a sharp pitched noise to be as annoying as possible. Pay attention to him! He demanded it! That was it, open the window!

He screeched in glee when they did and proceeded to yeet both bird and rat at them before scurrying off. Bahahah. He got them good. He puffed up, giggling on the roof top, little feet kicking in glee. Mmhm, okay, that was done. It was right?

All the two leggers seem to be giving each other things today. He didn't get why it was just boxes and like shiny papers. They were boring, but Blair wasn't boring! They liked bones and dead thing and had cats who had delicious food. And he was totally helping himself to the food tomorrow. Tonight thought it was time to go home and sleep.

In this essay, I will...
Character: Scricchio
Entry:

Winter was not pleasant. There was a distinct bite to the air and most of the leaves Scricch used to hide in had fallen. The piled up leaves had been pleasant, even with having to learn how not to make as much noise when traveling through them. The dingy, muck that came from melted snow, the many many layers that all the humans seemed to wear at this time. Winter was determined to keep him from hunting well.

Scricch had gone closer to the city when his typical prey no longer ventured so deep into the swamp. Approaching the displays set up on the outskirts of town, he'd gawked at the number of people funneling through the area. Strings of light covered trees, alongside cartoonish figures of things he'd caught glimpses of on his rare trips into town. Couples and groups spoke animatedly, gesturing wildly at all the various displays. Accosted by the lights draped everywhere, with "festive" spirit in prominent display, he had retreated back to the less appealing swamp areas.

He didn't understand. What was so great about this time of year? Darker, colder, less forgiving than the warmer months, what were humans so ecstatic about? Bright lights to combat the dark? The sanjaru could have wandered deeper into town, listened to the conversations, taken in the décor and festivities, but what purpose did it serve? He dwelt in the swamps, content to stargaze outside the city and hunt those who came near. It was different from the life he'd lead before, but much was the same. Maybe one day he'd try to find more of his own kind, form a new pack, but for now his freedom was enough.

Spring would come, the basic teachings had taught him that, and with it he would get his normal prey back. New humans would hike through the swamp, stumble upon his ruined shack of a home and be devoured just like all the rest. Scricch just had to bide his time and deal with having to range further out for his food for the duration of this "festive time of year."

All this good cheer was too much for him. Curling up among the ruins in the nest he'd crafted, tucked away from the worst of what winter could offer, he settled in to wait. The new year would be here soon enough, and with it the seasons he enjoyed most.
