Getting your starter pokémon

If you're here, then you're probably going to want a pokémon, right? Whether you're in it for the adventures, the roleplay, or just the cute art, is it really as fun if you don't have at least one? Of course, you might already have one or two - but there's nothing stopping you from wanting more, right?

Every player is entitled to one free, no-effort, Nauwillian starter pokémon to get them started, even if they already have another 'mon from a game or sale.

If you'd like to get your starter pokémon, you can do so at the Available Pokémon thread!

Make yourself a character

Pokémon are great, but to really enjoy the full breadth of what the shop has to offer, you'll need to go make yourself a human character. You can have as many or few as you like, and each one can have their own pokémon adventures independent of each other.

You'll need a human in order to go on expeditions as well as to catch, train, evolve, and breed pokémon! Everything about making a character can be found over at the Character Applications thread!

Try out an expedition

First, look over the Game Systems thread. This has everything you need to know about how the game works. While it's very much driven by player creativity, dice are used to spice things up and add some excitement and much needed success and failure to stories.

After that, head over to the Expeditions subforum and have a look at the Expeditions thread. It can be a lot to take in, so you could ask another player to go on an Expedition with you and help you out along the way. While it looks kind of intimidating, an Expedition is really just a roleplay with random events; you can encounter weird things to research, find items to take home, or even catch new pokémon in them!

We recommend starting out in Newbreeze Grasslands, since it's the easiest area to explore.

Ranks and training

Once you get your feet wet, you'll probably want to try and advance your standing on the island and your pokémon's strength. Both of these involve ranks, which are kind of like levels in an RPG. They represent how strong you or your pokémon are considered in the eyes of Nauwill.

If you want to make your pokémon stronger, you'll need to collect Training Certificates. These can be bought with money earned from Expeditions and RP, so play how you'd like and make those mons stronger!

Pretty soon you'll find out that you can't train a pokémon higher than their trainer's rank, though... so that's where ranking up your human characters comes in! These have more in depth requirements than pokémon, so you'll probably want to keep a journal to help you keep track of what you've done so far.

Shops and inventory

As you explore, you'll notice that you collect funding from the various factions on Nauwill. You can access these using our Discord bot! You can spend them there too; the different shops have rotating inventories that change daily, which each having a special set of things that only they can provide. You'll want to go there in order to buy everything you need to get further in the game, from healing items to pokéballs and even evolution objects!

Going deeper

By this point, you should have a pretty good grasp of the basic flow of Pokémon Expeditions. We encourage you to poke around any lore threads, or maybe come and ask us questions to answer some little obscurities living in the back of your mind. This is your journey to make, and we encourage you to plot, plan, and scramble everything we've set out to create a fun and interesting adventure for you and the other residents on Nauwill.

As always, if you have any questions, we can be found both in the main forum post or on Discord for the fastest response times.
