Expedition Area: Area 002 - Darksallow Valley (Beginner)

Pip hadn’t intended to return to Darksallow today. They were supposed to be working, but there had been a scheduling mishap, and they weren’t actually needed. It didn’t really matter to Pip, seeing as they didn’t have any other regular obligations that would make a rescheduled shift inconvenient. So they found themselves with an unexpectedly free afternoon. At first they thought they would spend it doing some working out, but, as they were starting up with their free weights, they were struck with the sudden itch to check out the forest again.

Or rather, they developed an itch, and it reminded them of the forest.

There was so much stinging nettle in there.

However, the route they had taken the other day had been surprisingly stinging nettle free! They were curious to see if that trip had been an anomaly, or if they might have similar luck if they tried that area again. So they scooped up their pokemon (those ones of whom who were out had mostly been idling around the dorm) and struck out for the cave that would lead them to Darksallow.

Once again, instead of following the river deeper into the forest, they cut a sharp left and headed to a relatively calm stretch of water. They had Mezzo out to serve as an extra set of eyes (they were very excitable and protective, which was inconvenient a lot of the time, but very useful in a watch-mon), and their still-as-of-yet-unnamed pikachu was waiting in his pokeball to be called on after they crossed the river. The plan had been to let Little Guy out when they reached the water – partially because he loved to swim (obviously) and partly for safety reasons.

It was never a good idea to swim alone, and, if they got attacked by something in the water, Mezzo wasn’t the best equipped for fighting underwater or dragging their ass back up to the surface. Having Little Guy out with them was, objectively, the safer choice. However… it had only been a couple of days since The Incident and Pip was still a bit… skittish. Realistically it hadn’t actually been a big deal – even if Little Guy had really been trying to pull Pip under, he was twenty pounds and Pip could pretty easily overpower him, even in the water – and it would be best to work on those kinds of behaviours now anyway.

So, as Pip settled down at the edge of the river to stow their superfluous clothing in their bag, they took Little Guy’s ball from their belt and summoned him. The regional totodile was, as always, immediately excited to see his trainer, and scurried up for attention and cuddles. Pip obliged as best as they good with one hand while their other sorted out their gear. “Okay buddy. We’re just crossing the water here, and then we’re going deeper into the wood. There isn’t time for playing right now, but we’ll be at the beach all day tomorrow. Alright?”

They weren’t sure how much of that the pokemon actually understood, but he chittered happily at them anyway. That would probably have to do.

Little Guy immediately slipped into the water and began splashing around and enjoying himself. It was probably a good thing Pip actively did not want to encounter a pokemon this early into his expedition, because he was sure Little Guy would have spooked off any that were nearby. Once all of their things were secured to their water proof bag, Pip joined Little Guy in the water and began their passage to the other side.

The river was shallow enough on the banks here that they could ford their way across at least part way, but it was deep enough in the middle to require swimming. The current was strong, and Pip enjoyed maneuvering through it. They really did, genuinely, love swimming, and it was so much more fun when the water was alive like this. Back at the training center they had always preferred to swim in the wave pool and artificial river, but the open ocean and real rivers were better still.

They didn’t let themselves linger though, because they had other places to be. Kind of. They had a vague plan and they should probably follow it. They would have packed differently if they were planning on staying in the water. They would have worn a wetsuit, for starters.

Pip made it to the other side without incident, and Little Guy followed them out of the water without complaint or attempts to drag them back in. They made sure to reward their regional totodile with attention and praise to reinforce the good behaviour.

Once they had gone through the routine of partially drying themselves and switching back into their walking kit, they released their pikachu from his ball, so all three of their regular pokemon were out with them. As expected, the timid little electric mouse immediately scampered up Pip’s leg and into their arms (although they bent down this time in anticipation and helped them up, so there were fewer scratches left in his wake) but Pip was determined to help the pokemon gain a little bit of confidence today.

“Hey buddy, it’s alright.” They gave him some reassuring skritches and tried to encourage him to unburry himself from Pip’s shirt.

Mezzo, while all this was going on, had been keeping a watchful eye on the forest around them. It could be very easily distracted sometimes, but it was a very careful watch-mon. It spotted something in one of the trees and chimed to get its trainer’s attention. Pip dutifully come over to inspect the bush Mezzo indicated, and could see that there was, indeed, something lodged in between the branches. They tried to reach it themselves but were unsuccessful.

Pip looked down at the little pokemon cowering in their arms and had an idea. They slowly lowered him to the ground, and, upon realizing what was happening, he tried to climb up Pip’s arms to their shoulders, but they caught him and placed him on the forest floor while keeping up a constant stream of calming head pats. “Okay! See that under there?” Pip pointed to the object that could probably be seen more clearly from the pikachu’s perspective than from theirs. “Can you go under there and get that for me?”

The pikachu looked up at them with big watery eyes.

Pip smiled encouragingly at him.

Mezzo chimed sternly and the pikachu bolted under the bush!

Mezzo.” Pip chided quietly, glaring sternly at the chingling, who floated off happily quite sure they had done nothing wrong.

The pikachu re-emerged a moment later with a potion in his mouth. He deposited it dutifully at Pip’s feet and then launched himself back into Pip’s arms. Pip, who had been crouched down and unprepared, let out an “oof” and toppled backwards onto their butt! They were so proud of their little pikachu though, and gave him lots of pets for a job well done.

From their new position propped up on one elbow, Pip saw that there was a patch of organ berries growing along the base of the tree. They plucked a couple as a reward for their brave little mouse.

Pip gathered themselves and their pokemon up and prepared to set off forward again. Their objective was to move farther into the woods, like they had last time. They had learned a lot of interesting things, and they were hoping to follow up on some of them. Maybe they would be able to find the bird species that had been leaving those little nesting spots?

(What Pip did not realize was, at that moment, the tree they were sitting at the base of, there near the edge of the river, was also home to one of those nesting spot. Did something rustle in the disguised nook? Was the mysterious feathered architect still home? Pip would never know, because they did not look up.)

While Pip was otherwise occupied packing up their things, Little Guy took the opportunity to sniff around the area. Something had caught his attention, but he wasn’t quite sure what it was. It smelled a little familiar… he prowled around, shoving his nose into ever root-gap and bush trying to find it. Mezzo took an interest in what he was doing and opted to follow along behind him, which would have materially harmed Little Guy’s stealth efforts if they had been worth anything to begin with.

The new pikachu – who Little Guy didn’t have many opinions on yet – was watching them wearily from beside their trainer. He wasn’t hindering Little Guy’s efforts though, so he was prepared not to hold his lack of curiosity against him.

Pip was nearly ready to head off again when Little Guy found what he had been looking for! The scent had been getting progressively stronger, and it had eventually lead him to a bush that appeared to be trembling slightly. Or, as it would turn out, housing a trembling pokemon. As soon as Little Guy shoved his inquisitive nose under the leaves, the regional poliwag that had been hiding inside the plant bolted! It scurried straight across Little Guy’s snout in its attempt to take the most direct path back to the river.

That path lead it straight past Pip! The trainer had just been getting back to their feet when the little frog-spawn pokemon tried to run underneath them in it’s mad dash to the water. Pip had to hop awkwardly side to side to avoid accidentally stepping on it. The process was made a bit more awkward by their attempt to pull a research ball out of their pocket, which they fumbled terribly.

The Nauwillian Poliwag made it safely back into the water with a little plop and Pip retrieved their still-empty research ball from the forest floor. Little Guy trotted over, feeling quite proud of themselves for successfully finding the source of the smell. He was right! The smell had been familiar. Their trainer had caught one of those pokemon just the other day. He rather suspected it would be joining them soon, but their trainer had been saying something about ‘acclimatization’ and ‘not trying to do introductions in the middle of a terrifying forest full of stinging nettle and sink holes’. Pokemon were way tougher than that. Their trainer was weird.

Speaking of… his trainer appeared to be unaware that they were about to step in another one of the sinkholes! They were distracted by the pikeachu who was trying to climb up into their arms again. Thankfully Mezzo had also spotted the weak spot and zoomed over to intercept them before they fell in. They had just started on this adventure! Little Guy didn’t want to turn around already. Besides, the nice lady with the smelly ointments wasn’t here to help them this time.
