Pip stood at the edge of the newly opened area, squinting skeptically into the rather foreboding treeline beyond the cavern.

They looked down at Little Guy, back up at the trees, then back down at Little Guy. “You can not possibly think that this is a good idea.”

Little guy looked up at them, mouth hanging open and rows of sharp teeth on display, and cocked his head to the side slightly. If Pip didn’t know any better, they’d think there wasn’t a single thought behind those pink eyes, but they did know better. Little Guy pranced forward a bit, closer toward the trees, but never took his eyes off of his trainer. The message was quite clear: Let’s go, let’s go, let’s go!

Pip sighed and ran a hand down their face. “This is a terrible idea.”

They gave Little Guy the release signal, and he zipped forward. He stopped periodically to make sure that his trainer was keeping up, but as soon as the pair had reached the closest part of the river, he threw himself off the bank and into the water. He immediately grabbed a piece of debris drifting in the water and barrel rolled it beneath the surface. Little Guy was having a grand old time, clearly.

Pip looked over the edge, examining the… somewhat suspect river. They didn’t see any pokemon in the immediate area, so it was probably fine for Little Guy to swim for the time being. Besides that… rivers were good landmarks, and they usually led somewhere. At the very least it would be a good marker to follow back out, when it became time to turn back around.

It was the middle of the day, but it felt much later, with the way the canopy blocked out so much of the sun’s light. Between that and the relative quiet, Pip was entirely ready to turn around again right now, but that would be silly. They knew that a bunch of other people from the town were venturing out into these woods today as well, so they couldn’t really be as alone as they seemed… but still.

Maybe they should have stuck to the other route? It was much more inviting than this place. Besides – they were a marine biologist. Surely they would be more useful exploring along the coast?

Little Guy made a trilling noise, as if responding to Pip’s thoughts with a reminder that there was water here too; is that not marine enough for you to biology?

Pip didn’t respond to the imagined ribbing.

They wondered if maybe they should bring out another one of their pokemon? The two recent family gifts were… more trouble than they were worth, at this moment. Neither seemed particularly inclined to listen to them yet… which was to say, Pip hadn’t given them a lot of opportunity to listen to them yet. Soon. They’d work on it soon.

The new pikachu maybe? He had been a recent acquisition as well, but Pip was fond of him already. He seemed a bit skittish though, so maybe this wasn’t the best time…

Pip pulled the pikachu’s ball from their belt, rolling it between their fingers as the debated releasing him from it. He was still new, and Pip hadn’t had a lot of opportunity to work with him. The middle of a creepy forest with lots of twists and turns and hidy places was probably not the ideal conditions to try start their journey together. If a battle broke out it would probably hold the pikachu’s attention long enough for it to be okay, but-

Pip’s thoughts were abruptly and rudely brought to a conclusion as the ground beneath them gave out.

“Aaaaahhh!”

They had been walking fairly close to the edge of the bank, and had apparently missed that the section they had stepped onto was less ‘solid dirt’ and more ‘a probably mostly dead plant covered in other mostly dead plants’. One moment they were strolling alone, the next they were knee deep in plant detritus. Thankfully they were able to throw themselves to the side and catch most of their weight on a conveniently located boulder before they got too tangled up.

They probably would have twisted their leg or something if they hadn’t caught themselves, and that would have been… not a lot of fun to walk back to town on. Pip sighed and extracted their leg from the hole, wincing at the squelching noise that was made as they pried their foot out of the mud at the bottom. It was a good thing that they opted for boots over their usual sandals (a new purchase, and the trade off was, of course, that they hadn’t been properly broken in yet and were already rubbing uncomfortably at their Achilles tendon), but even still, it felt like some of the mud might have gotten in over the top.

This expedition was off to a great start.

Once safely extracted from the muck, they pulled themselves up onto the rock that had saved them from further harm to inspect the damage that had been done. Their leg was covered in mud, but they were otherwise surprisingly unharmed. No cuts or scratches. Maybe it wasn’t so bad after all.

There was a curious chittering from the water, and Pip looked over to see Little Guy eyeing them curiously. Pip waved him off, smiling reassuringly. “All good. Just wasn’t watching where I was going.”

Little Guy chirped happily and dove back down into the water, apparently appease by Pip’s response. He darted forward down the river, leading the way.

“Better not let him get too far ahead of me…” Pip muttered as they got back to their feet and brushed themselves off. “Onward and forward. Or… Something.” They figured they should probably stick to more solid ground as they continued, and chose to walk through a patch of low-lying plants. The root structures should provide some reliable stability, they thought.

The ground was much sturdier there. Unfortunately, they weren’t walking through the plans for long before they felt a swinging sensation on their leg, just above their boot. Pip reared back, thinking that maybe they had been bit by some kind of bug pokemon, but they quickly realized what had happened. They hadn’t recognized the plants, but they must have been some kind of stinging nettle! The burning sensation was quickly spreading where their exposed skin had brushed up against the leaves.

They stumbled away to a clear patch, pulling their bag off their shoulder as they rummaged through it. “Ah – Arceus – feraligatr toes! Gah!” It took them a minute, but they eventually managed to fish out their deodorant, which they uncapped quickly and began liberally applying to their burning leg. The trick didn’t work as well as it did against the stinging nettle where they were from, but it alleviated the pain somewhat.

They narrowed their eyes at the offending plants, and then glared accusingly at the surrounding forest more generally.

Little Guy clambered out of the river and up the bank, coming over to see what all the commotion was about. They shuffled closer to sniff at Pip’s leg and pulled their head back in the – probably overwhelming, to his little nose – Clean & Fresh scent. Little Guy whined and looked between Pip and the water.

“Yes, you’re having a great time, I can see, but at this rate, if I tried to get in that water I’d probably slip, hit my head, and drown.” They said dryly, reaching down to give the Nauwillian totodile a skritch behind his eye ridges. Another thought occurred to them and they shuddered. “Or it would turn out there is some kind of fresh water tentacool in that river that would pull me under.”

Yeah. Best to stick to dry land.

Something seems to be stuck just under some exposed tree roots. You find thick vines that end in rounded tips, reminding you of a particular pokemon.

(Roll was a mistake!)

Pip sighed and kept walking, trying to ignore the stinging pain in their leg. They had barely been hiking for ten minutes! This was not an auspicious start. What had they been thinking about before all that? Oh yeah – if they should take out… pikachu… oh shit, the pikachu!

They had been holding the pikachu’s ball when they’d almost fallen into the pit, and they weren’t holding it now! Had they been holding it when they had been looking through their bag? Pip started looking around frantically, while pulling their bag off their shoulder again and started rummaging through it, just in case. Thankfully they had the presence of mind to give Little Guy a recall command, so he didn’t get too far ahead while Pip backtracked.

The pikachu’s ball was, amazingly, in their bag. The heaved a huge sigh of relief, clutching the ball to their chest as their heart rate slowed back to non-panicked levels. As they caught their breath, they felt a renewed burning sensation on their leg and… damn it! They stumbled back into the patch of stringing plants!

Pip hopped out of the patch and towards the river bank, deciding it was safer to walk along the river’s edge than keep stumbling in aggressive foliage. On their way down the steep embankment, however, they lost their footing and had to throw a hand out to catch themselves… directly onto another one of the stinging plants! Ow ow ow ow ow.

On the way down they saw some strange vines poking out from the exposed roots of a tree growing not too far from the bank… but they decided it was better not to push their luck with what might be even more aggressive foliage.

Little Guy popped out of the water near Pip, obediently marching up to stand next to their leg. He looked up at them expectantly, waiting for praise or a treat for doing as they were bid. Pip scrambled to apply some more of the deodorant to their newly stinging limbs, and pulled a little snack from their bag to toss to Little Guy so they didn’t risk rubbing any of the scented product onto this sensitive scales.

Once they had done what they could to tend to their wounds, they spent a moment properly contemplating the forest ahead of them.

“Screw it.” Pip leaned down and scooped Little Guy up under his little legs, and cradled him in their non-stringing arm. “Not worth it. We’re going back. We’ll try again tomorrow. Today, we’re going to… do we have a spa in town?”

They started marching back the way they had come, being extra mindful of the ground beneath them and the trees above them. Pip was determined to go straight back to the town, but as they neared the cave entrance they noticed that one of the trees was looking particularly… goopy. There was a very visible accumulation of honey leaking from some kind of hive attached to one of the trees.

If it was a sweet honey… that could be very useful…

Pip looked down at Little Guy who looked back up at them with their typical dopey smile. They unclipped Chingling’s ball from their belt and pressed the release. The little bell pokemon appeared and did a cursory zoom around Pip as it took in the surroundings. While it got it’s bearings, Pip pulled a little mason jar out of their bag that they had been keeping trail snacks in, and dumped the remaining food into their palm (where Little Guy immediately started in on it). They blew into the jar in a vague attempt to clear out the remaining bits, and then handed it to the Chingling.

It chimed in confusion, but obligingly took the jar. Pip pointed up at the honey with their newly freed hand. “See that there? I need you to fly up and try and scoop some of the honey into that jar. Do you think you can do that?”

The chingling chimed cheerfully and did as it was bade. The whole process when remarkably smoothly… compared to how the rest of their trip had gone. It floated back down a mere few minutes later, tiny far full (and unfortunately coated) in sweet smelling honey! Pip praised the little pokemon as they carefully twisted the cap back on.
