Weary paws dragged Streamheart into camp. Though she had returned with nothing, her heart lifted slightly as she saw a few other warriors managing to bring in some fresh kill. The prey was still just as shriveled as the world around them but it was something. Tired and hungry, Streamheart curled up next to her mother and tried her best to rest.

Silverstreak had gone out every day to hunt, or at least, claiming that she was hunting. She did try, initially, to find any prey available, but she kept worrying about Flickerpaw and her sisters. Her dreams were filled with tense nightmares - not for the sake of those who had remained behind, but those who had left. She couldn't protect them from harm now that they were gone. She battled with regret of her choice silently, not wanting to let on to the other cats who had sacrificed their lives or to the elders who couldn't have gone on that journey even if they wanted to. She thought of Palestorm, the stubborn elder who had insisted upon leaving with the other cats and she smiled. Why couldn't the rest of the elders have followed her lead?

She went out for longer and longer stretches of time, her mind clouded with worry and her eyes glazed over. She was hungry - every cat was hungry. She wasn't bringing any prey in, so she couldn't find it in herself to eat. Even the elders were going out hunting and bringing back more prey than she was.

Another day passed without her bringing any prey back to the camp and so she avoided the meager fresh kill pile as she returned to the warriors den, curling between her sister's empty nests and falling into a fitful sleep. (WC: 232)

Another day of unsuccessful hunting. Streamheart sighed and gave a sad shake of her head as she entered camp once again empty pawed. Today was just a bad day, tomorrow will be better. Tomorrow I'll catch something for sure. She thought as she flopped down in her nest and began grooming some of the dust from her fur. The grey striped she-cat tried to keep her thoughts positive, afraid of what would happen if she let herself dwell on her starving clan, her own hungry belly, for to long.

Silverstreak's hunger had started out as a sharp, cold pain, but with so many days of hopelessness in her hunts, coming back and ignoring what prey her Clanmates had caught, it felt more like a dull ache in her belly. She felt dizzy and distant, like her head and paws were disconnected from one another. The scents of her sisters that had lingered around the camp and in their nests had faded and Silverstreak was beginning to feel truly alone, despite being surrounded by her remaining Clanmates. She just couldn't work up the nerve to smile anymore. Why should she need to, when there was no cat depending on her for strength she didn't have? She couldn't work up the nerve to pretend for someone else's sake, not when all of her Clanmates were in the same position.

She got lucky one day when she went out hunting. She'd been stumbling through the forest only to hear the agitated, choking garble of a bird near death. She hurried forward and found a single chick, peeping away pathetically on the ground, it's body broken. It must've fallen from its nest in one of the branches above. She turned her gaze upward, but she could see neither the nest in any of the trees nor hear birdsong. How dull had her senses become?

She stepped over the chick and for a moment, felt a twinge of sympathy. But the Clan must eat - and when she bent over it to sink her teeth into soft flesh, a wave of fierce hunger bubbled up and she tore into the morsel without restraint or thought. It was only when there was little more than bones remaining that she came back to her senses. Guilt wracked into her - she wasn't meant to eat the prey for her Clanmates - for the elders who could barely hunt for themselves.

She'd stayed out longer that day, well into the evening, but no other prey made it across her path. She didn't return to camp until the following morning, when she'd washed the evidence of her eaten kill from her fur, returning with a slump of her shoulders. She felt as though she was carrying the guilt of the whole mountain on her back. (WC: 374)
