The further they got from home, the more fruitful they were with hunting. It made sense, with the river having been diverted. But still, it was so surprising.

Nutpelt's day started as it usually did with hunting. She was in a tree hunting, looking for owls. There seemed to be a lot of owls around her. She hadn't been the only one to hunt them. Sure enough, the hollow Nutpelt had seen from the ground held an owl. This one was bigger than her previous ones. Definitely an adult. It was dispatched with relative ease, only earning her a few scratches and one or two pecks. Thankfully none of them were too deep, as she was able to dodge around it even in the small hollow. The owl was almost as big as her so there was still wiggle room.

It was harder to bury, but she did it anyway, just in case. Within minutes of hiding it, she found a grouse. A much larger bird of the ground than a thrush. Licking her chops, she was excited for this one, even though it meant even more feather plucking for her or whoever got it.

With the catch of the grouse, other catches were made rather quickly and hastily buried. A squirrel was caught just before it could bolt up a nearby tree, a lizard amongst the roots of said tree, and another squirrel who had seen her catch the first one. All three buried in a hollow beneath the tree and she moved on.

A snake was caught next as it tried to strike at her, batting it so hard in the head it was stunned. She was able to give it a swift bite after that, and curled it up beneath a large root to hide it. Then a thrush within a few moments of that, and she realized she had far too much prey to try to bring back.

So she started with her most recent catch, the snake and thrush. Then she went back out to get the two squirrels and the lizard, dragging them back by the tails. Ew. So much squirrel fluff. Then the grouse was brought on its own as it was so big, followed by the owl on its own too. Huffing, she was proud at how high she had made the prey pile. Nutpelt hadn't seen it so full after a single hunt in a long time.

Today...

Today was an amazing day.

Poppypaw set out for hunting just about as confident as any other day. She only brought three prey items home each time, but it was still something! She would be lucky to get even one back in the higher mountains. Bringing back anything was... Amazing.

Today, the young she-cat had a particularly lucky day. Or perhaps it was because they were further from their previous territory than normal. So none of the prey really worried about cats on the ground hunting them. It was likely the second thing.

Shortly after setting out to hunt, she found her first prey item. A mouse. It was nice and plump, currently loading itself up on some seeds. Poppypaw crouched and waited, stalking closer slowly until she was finally within pouncing distance. Swift bite to the back of the neck and a little shake to be sure, and her first item was caught.

Burying it, she continued on for several minutes before finding her next prey. It was a snake, slithering slowly through the undergrowth. Most likely it was looking for food too, but the clan needed to eat as well. It was the cycle of life after all. The snake was caught with more care, however, to make sure it didn't come back to bite her. Some snakes had something in their fangs that could really, really harm a cat if they weren't careful. So that was definitely important.

Once it was stashed for safe keeping, she continued on, watching a squirrel scurry up a tree. Hmmm...

Poppypaw decided to run after it. Why not? Up the tree carefully and quietly like Nutpelt had shown her, and soon enough, the squirrel was within her jaws. So much fur but it felt full and juicy. Mmmm~

She wasn't too far up the tree so she just dropped the squirrel before preparing to get down, when she noticed something... The branch she was on overlapped with another on another tree. Where she saw a hollow with a small owl...

With Nutpelt's advice in her mind again, she carefully tottered across... Only barely startling the small owl. A few scratches were gained, but in the end, the owl was caught. Hopping carefully out of the tree, she gathered the squirrel and headed back with the two in tow. Then she returned to get her other prey.

Poppypaw was super successful today.
