Warriors: Cats of the Sun

[META] Hunting Game! [Closed! Success!]

Blinded By Silence

Grizzled Veteran
D
The drying of the river and the death of old Mountain Clan's home meant that the wildlife, too, had been forced to flee. Gone were the songbirds in the trees or the dens of rabbits rearing their young. All they could do was move on- to learn to hunt new grounds, to adapt to this strange new world.

Sunseer has called the most able of his clan to hunt as they move on. For the good of the whole clan -- these cats are braving the wilds to try and find what scarce prey they can. This will not be an easy task: this close to their old home, the animals who have stuck around are clever and quick. The hunters will have to think two steps ahead of their prey and push past the limits they thought they had.

The future of their friends depends on it.

[ 45 / 45 ]

To play in this game, Warriors and Apprentices will be given different hunting rules.
PLEASE NOTE: WARRIORS, AND APPRENTICES HAVE SEPARATE PREY LISTS; ELDERS USE THE APPRENTICE LIST. Please check to make sure you are reading the correct list!

A Warrior, trained in the ways of hunting, is able to hunt for longer and take down bigger prey. Each warrior may roll ten d20 dice, all in one post. The number will correspond to a number on the prey list. You can edit your post to include what prey (if any) your cat caught, and tally your running total for the hunt. Roleplay is not required, but you're free to do so, if you so choose.

Apprentices are not quite as capable, but still bring what they are able to the clan. Their smaller bodies and less time training mean they aren't as capable of handling larger prey. Each apprentice may roll 5 d12 dice, all in one post. The number will correspond to a number on the prey list. You can edit your post to include what prey (if any) your cat caught, and tally your running total for the hunt. Roleplay is not required, but you're free to do so, if you so choose.

Elders are weak and grow tired easily. Some may have poor hearing, poor vision. This makes hunting very difficult for them. Each apprentice may roll 3 d12 dice, all in one post. The number will correspond to a number on the prey list. You can edit your post to include what prey (if any) your cat caught, and tally your running total for the hunt. Roleplay is not required, but you're free to do so, if you so choose.

The hunters will need to gather a total of 45 food points each day in order to keep the clan fed while they travel. But be aware! Failure may mean consequences for the hunters and the clan as a whole.

Nutpelt started off rather... Somewhat excited, yet also not excited. Apprehensive? She couldn't really place a term to it, but she was going to try her absolute hardest to find prey for the group as they traveled. She would always be the last to eat, but if every one else was hungry, she wanted to help out and make sure their bellies were full. She only hoped that the ones who had stayed behind were also faring better, with a smaller group to feed.

As the she-cat stalked through the undergrowth, she thought she heard movement and paused. After waiting a while, and not scenting anything, she moved forward slowly and quietly, until something came into view. Rustling stalks of long grass. Crouching further, she continued to watch, until she finally pounced. However, all she had caught was a grasshopper. Huffing, she flicked it aside, then watched it take off further into the forest.

Continuing on, after a few minutes, she could smell something nearby. Ears twitching, she hunted around for it, until finally she realized what she was smelling. An owl feather at the base of a tree. Glancing up, she could see the hollow it was likely nesting in. Perhaps it was a young owl, if it was shedding it's feathers. Curious, she started up the tree as slowly and quietly as she could. Closer and closer to the hollow... Finally, she was able to peek inside. Sure enough, it was a young owl. Not a baby, but still not fully with it's proper flying feathers - if she remembered Robinflight and Duskwing correctly. Either way, it should be easy prey. She was able to climb in before it really started to squawk, and killed it with a swift and hard bite to the neck, before clambering out and to the ground as quickly as possible. In case its parents had heard. She buried it there to come back for later.

Her next catch was a mouse not far off, caught easily beneath her large paws. It had heard her coming, but wasn't fast enough to get away. After hiding that, it was near impossible for her to find anything else for a good long while. Perhaps her adventures with the owl and mouse had scared everything off. Just when she thought her luck had run dry, she came across a thrush hopping around beneath a bush. It was dispatched almost as quickly as the mouse, having only hopped up into the bush for a few moments before she was able to snatch it. Then there was nothing again for a while, and the day was drawing to a close. So she gathered up her prey - Owl, Mouse and Thrush - and headed back to where the traveling cats had decided to settle for the night.

Poppypaw was EAGER to get going. She had hunted before, sure, with hunting patrols. But this time she was going to be able to get some time to herself with hunting. Though not far from the others, she was certain, but still. They were heading away from their territory, though still hadn't left it yet, so she was excited to see what was left at the edges of their world.

Almost right off the bat, she spotted a mouse. It was relatively easy to catch. The rodent wasn't too big or too small, but it would definitely help to feed at least one cat. She hoped it would be okay. And it wasn't too long before she found another mouse. Perhaps from the same family, or a mate. That suddenly made her feel really bad, and Poppypaw almost didn't catch it. In the end, though, she remembered this is the cycle of life, and caught it, too.

Both mice were a little hard to carry at once, so she buried them together for now. Taking a good look at her surroundings to make sure she knew where to find it later, the she-cat started off to look for more.

She went a really, really long time without finding anything, and was starting to get really discouraged. It wasn't until she literally ran into a bush that housed a few thrushes that she felt better. The she-cat managed to smack one so hard as it tried to fly away that it hobbled to the side and fell out, stumbling across the ground. She proceeded to hit it again, killing it, and picked it up proudly.

Going back for her two mice, Poppypaw did her best to get everything into her mouth at once. This ended in her dragging the mice by the tail and the thrush by a wing, just lightly trailing in the dirt as she headed back to the rest of the cats.

Today's haul was a little bit better.

She started her day off with a lizard. It would be tougher meat, leaner, but every bite would count. Either way it would help the travelling clan of cats to keep up their energy and morale. Lots of bones would be left behind, too, but those they could bury or scatter easier than some of the bigger bones from things like the owls they'd been catching. Which, as it turned out, a few other cats had caught as well.

Her next catch was nothing other than another owl. This one was about the same age as the previous, so she did still feel bad about it. But unfortunately this seemed to be the new life cycle for the feathered fiends. Nutpelt had gotten better at climbing up the tree without making much noise, and had caught this one before it could let out a loud sqwuack. Her journey out of the tree was a bit bumpier, but eventually she made it down and buried the owl rather close to where she stashed the snake.

Several more minutes went by as she scouted around before she found another thrush. Nothing overly exciting here, it went about as well as the day before. After all, she did catch the small bird. Its neck was swiftly snapped with the shake of her head, and then it was buried for now.

Her last prey was a disaster. She had been stalking it quite well. It hadn't picked up a single vibration or noise from her. Nutpelt was within pouncing distance when suddenly... Shifting her foot cracked a twig beneath her she hadn't noticed before. The mouse perked, and then bolted, sendind Nutpelt careening after it. The chase ended rather quickly as it darted into a hole, and Nutpelt collided with the ground nose first. Mrrowing in frustration, she backed away, rubbed at her nose, and huffed. Tail lashing. She had been so close...

For now, she returned with her lizard, owl and thrush, finding it amenable.

Once more, the older apprentice ventured forth to hunt for her clan.

Nothing for a while, and thenm a mouse. A mouse! She spotted it from afar and slowly crept up on it, whiskers twitching, tail vibrating just above the ground. Her pelt allowed her to blend in a bit better with the shadows, and though her paws were larger than most cats her age, they landed quietly against the underbrush. Soon enough, the mouse was caught beneath those big paws and a triumphant little mrrrrrow left her. Pleased with her catch, she carried it with her for a little while.

Until she caught scent of something else. Ears twitched, golden eyes scanned the undergrowth. There it was, another thrush. There were a lot of these birds around. Today would go much better than yesterday, she was sure. Now she was ready for it! No more bumbling around and barely managing to catch it. The mouse was placed down before she started to stalk the bird, and moments later, she popped out from the tall blades of grass with the small bird in her mouth.

Back to the first mouse, the thrush was placed down, and before she could pick the pair up, more movement. Soft sounds. Ears swiveled as she crouched immediately. Another mouse was scuttling closer and closer to her. Oh this would be far too easy. Though she wouldn't let that sway her from honing in and making sure she actually caught the dang thing. Closer...

Closer...

Pounce!

Success! Another mouse. Her catch was identical to the day before, but it was getting pretty late, so once more, she padded back to the group with the trio in her jaws. She was getting good at this.
