▷ The Companions

My Four Seasons

Mule Account

Welcome to the companion guide, where information on the current companions within Everchange can be found! Companions are little friends that can be either wild or owned by a pony and typically have the intelligence of a standard animal. Companions cannot fully communicate with ponies (unless otherwise noted), but they can understand another companion perfectly fine.
Examples shown are unmutated companions of that species to display what to expect from a standard companion of that species!
Sizing is loosely noted as; tiny - small - medium - large - massive. We typically leave a bit of wiggle room in these sizes, letting just how big the individual companion is up to customers, so don't feel too stifled!

Owlgriff :: OW-l-grihf
▷ Sizing ◁
Small
▷ Plural ◁
Owlgriffs
▷ Diet ◁
Carnivores
Energetic and small, they're hard to contain when they want to go go go. While they're affectionate and absolutely love making new friends, owlgriffs are also clever creatures who demand stimulus of some sort to keep them sane. They're not for an owner who wants an "easy" companion, as they need a lot of attention, training, and love.

▷ Abilities ◁
Flight
Cloudwalking

It's not a surprise they can use their large wings for flying, is it? Owlgriffs also have the ability to walk on clouds, making them a common animal within cloud cities and villages.

Ribbit :: RIB-it
▷ Sizing ◁
Tiny
▷ Plural ◁
Ribbits
▷ Diet ◁
Insectivores
Ribbits are very similar to a normal frog. In fact, not much really distinguishes them from their frog kin, as they were selectively bred from frogs. They're a rather docile and relaxed companion, although they're generally more inclined to seek out affection from their owners. Honestly, the only real defining difference from a normal frog is their indestructive nature; they can withstand any magical and physical blow, quite literally bouncing back from any force exerted upon them with their goofy smiles.

▷ Abilities ◁
Physically Indestructible

They're indestructible; literally. The only thing that will take a ribbit out is old age, disease, or starvation. They have no other abilities or differences from a standard frog, although ribbits have been bred exclusively for their perseverance and affectionate nature.

Hare :: HEHR
▷ Sizing ◁
Small
▷ Plural ◁
Hares
▷ Diet ◁
Herbivores
Hares are your general domesticated rabbit. Affectionate, social, and a tad stubborn, they're full of personality and will often push to get their way. They're expressive and enjoy attention, making them a popular companion within Everchange, but new owners often aren't prepared for how often they relentlessly chew on everything, or even just how needy they actually can be.

▷ Abilities ◁
None!

Just an average rabbit! Hares are not quite as exciting as other companions, but they make up for it with how easy they are to bond with!

Babal :: BA-bul
▷ Sizing ◁
Medium
▷ Plural ◁
Babals
▷ Diet ◁
Carnivores
Babals are an easy-to-care-for companion with a severely poor reputation, having been labeled a pest by farmers unlucky enough to experience just how easily they reproduce and spread. Babals are unlucky in the fact that they are firmly rooted to one spot, which they'll stay within until either forcibly replanted or removed. They're picky on who they bond with, but once they've chosen their caretaker they are fiercely protective and loyal for life.

▷ Abilities ◁
Can Speak

Babals are incredibly smart creatures, blessed with a higher than average intelligence very similar to a small child. They can form coherent sentences if exposed enough to other ponies and have complicated thought processes.

Budgie :: BU-jee
▷ Sizing ◁
Tiny
▷ Plural ◁
Budgies
▷ Diet ◁
Grainvores
These colorful and small birds make excellent beginner companions, as they need very little in terms of physical care and are generally satisfied with toys and affection. They're a fairly quiet bird, chirping faintly here and there unless distressed. Budgies do best with another of their kind, preferring a friend or two to perch with.

▷ Abilities ◁
Flight

They can fly like any other bird! Everchange does not encourage the clipping of bird wings, making most owned budgies free to soar throughout their homes and get into just about anything big enough to contain them.

Angelfish :: AYN-jel FISH
▷ Sizing ◁
Tiny
▷ Plural ◁
Angelfish
▷ Diet ◁
Omnivores
Angelfish come in a variety of colors, designs, and patterns. They require quiet, slow-moving freshwater. While pretty, angelfish are opportunistic in behavior, known for fighting their own species if food becomes scarce or their home is too small.

Angelfish enjoy schooling with their own kind, often even preferring similar colored fish!

▷ Abilities ◁
None!

Angelfish are a standard fish companion, needing water to breathe/travel or charms. They aren't the most intelligent creatures, but they can recognize faces!

Fae :: FAY
▷ Sizing ◁
Tiny
▷ Plural ◁
Fae
▷ Diet ◁
Sunlight
Fae are delicate companions that feed exclusively off sunlight, much like the flowers they so resemble! They're an elusive companion, only approaching those they inherently trust. Otherwise, fae can be found tending to fauna or gathering in large groups while absorbing sunlight. They're a shy species and one can easily lose favor with them if they feel disrespected or frightened.

While fairly intelligent for a companion, they're unable to speak spoken language. Instead, fae make soft bell-like sounds, which can become quite shrill when upset!

▷ Abilities ◁
Plant Growth
Flight

Plants benefit greatly from these flying companions, as they emit faint dust that nourishes the fauna it touches, prompting faster growth and recovery.

Lotoise :: lo-TOY-s
▷ Sizing ◁
Large
▷ Plural ◁
Lotoises
▷ Diet ◁
Herbivore
Those who really want a laid-back, easy to care for, and mellow companion might want to consider a lotoise, as they'll have a massive snuggle friend for life. Lotosies ask for very little in a perfect partnership; some water, some love, and maybe something to lay on. The lotuses on their backs are attached and bloom when they're at their healthiest, making it clear when they need to be taken to a vet.

▷ Abilities ◁
Camouflage

Lotoises are slow reacting creatures, often catching onto danger only once it's too late. To combat this, they've developed the ability to camouflage with their surroundings, which they naturally do plenty.

Wotter :: WAH-ter
▷ Sizing ◁
Medium
▷ Plural ◁
Wotters
▷ Diet ◁
Omnivores

Wotters are small otter-like animals who have a penchant for mischief. They tend not to take much seriously, making them difficult to train and even harder to tame. Wotters are not for the inexperienced as they need proper direction and supervision. They are food-motivated, however, helping the battle go smoother if you can figure out their favorite snack. Wotters love learning new tricks, especially if you have the right treats, making them highly sought after to participate in tournaments.

Their gem glows constantly, although they have the ability to dim or strengthen it at will. It's believed they developed their gems due to their poor night vision.

▷ Abilities ◁
Bubble Breath

Wotters have the ability to spit bubbles that can cause a small amount of damage. Unfortunately, Wotters lack stamina, limiting themselves to a few bursts before tiring out.

Flyingfish :: FLIE-eeng FISH
▷ Sizing ◁
Tiny
▷ Plural ◁
Flyingfish
▷ Diet ◁
Omnivore

Flyingfish are sometimes a nightmare to their owners, flinging themselves out of the water at the most unsuspecting times and often ending up flopping about on the floor. Luckily, flyingfish can breathe out of the water, giving their owners a chance to scoop them back into their tanks without too much worry - but it's still an often enough to be annoying situation at best. Flyingfish are also loud, able to sing and shriek when excited, which can turn off some potential owners.

Overall, while they're fairly low maintenance they unfortunately tend to be rehomed a lot due to owners not researching prior to adoption, a testament to why knowing a species before adopting is extra important.

▷ Abilities ◁
None!

Flyingfish cannot truly fly, but they do enjoy flinging themselves out of the water. They can (and often enough do) emit sounds similar to shrieks, screams, trills, and general abstract noises. Flyingfish can recognize faces and even learn tricks easily, making them a fun companion to have if you can tolerate their constant troublesome nature.

Scarab :: SKER-uhb
▷ Sizing ◁
Tiny
▷ Plural ◁
Scarabs
▷ Diet ◁
Coprophagy

Harmless in both nature and abilities, scarabs are large beetles originating from Everchange deserts. They're fairly affectionate towards their owners and quiet, making them easy and all around loveable entry pets. They can also fly, but prefer skittering about, as its easier to find food and habitat out of the skies.

▷ Abilities ◁
Flight

An important thing to note is that they can be territorial, fighting their own kind for both habitat and, if their bonds are high enough, to defend and claim their owner. It's best to avoid having more than one of these companion types.

Boof :: BOOF
▷ Sizing ◁
Medium
▷ Plural ◁
Boofs
▷ Diet ◁
Carnivores

Boofs are excitable, eager, clever, and affectionate pets, absolutely adoring their owners. They need constant stimulus and training, often getting bored and destructive in response, but otherwise, they're fairly easy to care for! Boofs just want to learn and do, so give them plenty of toys and activities to keep them happy!

▷ Abilities ◁
Magic Tracking

Boofs can smell the presence of magic, whether strong or faint. Their keen sense of smell can help locate magical tools, places where magic was recently used, and valuable magical gemstones.

Maow :: MAO
▷ Sizing ◁
Small
▷ Plural ◁
Maows
▷ Diet ◁
Carnivore
Smart, vocal, and assertive, maows like to run their homes, almost even training their owners themselves. They have less interest in pleasing their owners than most companions, but that doesn't make them any less affectionate or endearing. Maows prefer routine, enjoying their day-to-day life as it is. They're curious little creatures, often sticking their nose and paw into things they don't understand.

▷ Abilities ◁
Magic Tracking
Luck of Nine Lives

Much like boofs, maows can smell magic, they're just less likely to actively help their owners in locating it without rigorous training, and even then a maow is likely to just decide they don't want to help randomly. They also carry with them the luck of having nine lives, quite literally! These fluffy felines have the uncanny knack to avoid accidental deaths up to nine times - though they'll still die of natural causes and advanced aging.

Serapent :: SEHR-uh-pent
▷ Sizing ◁
Small
▷ Plural ◁
Serapents
▷ Diet ◁
Carnivore
Now you're never safe from snakes! Serapents can be found on the ground or flying about in the air, which they prefer doing in the first place. Affectionate and tactile, serapents like experiencing other textures, often sliding over soft or hot surfaces. They bond easily with ponies and are generally low-maintenance, making them great for new owners!

▷ Abilities ◁
Flight

It's a given they can fly thanks to their numerous wings. They lack any venom, which should help soothe the nerves of ponies afraid of the idea of a flying snake.

Misp :: MIHSP
▷ Sizing ◁
Small
▷ Plural ◁
Misps
▷ Diet ◁
N/A

Misps are an anomaly in Everchange, as many things seem to be. Whenever a kitsune is born a misp follows, emerging from their orb at some point of the kitsunes childhood. Misps can also recreate amongst themselves, with not all having come from a kitsune orb in the end. Misps are fairly independent creatures, regardless of the origin of birth, and only tend to bond with one pony in their lifetime (if any at all). They're a picky and mischievous species, making them not for the inexperienced.

Misps do not require food, nor do they eat at all.

▷ Abilities ◁
Floating
Phasing

Misps are spirit-like while still being a complete living entity, often passing through walls, floors, and furniture to get where they want to go. This can, understandably, be a bit unnerving, especially if one doesn't even own a misp. As a result, misps can be seen as pests by some, giving the companion a bad name.

Possestry :: poh-ZES-stree
▷ Sizing ◁
Small
▷ Plural ◁
Possestries
▷ Diet ◁
N/A
The possestry are enchanted baked goods that were created for companionship. Conceived in idea after Sticky Bun and Butterscotch Bling grew fed up of their lack of children, these little baked goods became their kids, born from the passion that brought them together: baking. Once possestries have been baked to order in Bun and Scotch's specialty bakery, The Possestry Patisserie, these confectionery darlings come to life to live it with their new family.

There are three types of possestry: layered drake (cakes), doh-nohs (doughnuts), and nibble bits (cupcakes).

▷ Abilities ◁
- Acrid scent

As possestries are made to be pets instead of food, their enchantment grants them protection in the form of an acrid scent that they emit when they feel threatened. It is known to cause burns in the nostrils like smelling salts and makes the eyes tear up. This helps to keep them from being eaten... most of the time. The donuts seem to fall victim to being bitten more often than the other two.

Dormouse :: DOOR-maos
▷ Sizing ◁
Tiny
▷ Plural ◁
Dormice
▷ Diet ◁
Omnivore
Dormice are rodents that were originally found primarily in farmlands and fields. Hoarders by nature, they tend to exchange small trinkets with one another as a form of currency. Highly familial, dormice suffer on their own -- it is important to ensure your little friend has others of its kind if you want them happiest! They're fairly intelligent creatures and can learn tricks and are loyal to their owners, making them a popular companion.

▷ Abilities ◁
Puff Explosion

Their dandelion tail can be a defensive measure, able to explode in a flurry of seeds when a dormouse feels threatened. It is entirely a distraction method, lacking any ability to actually physically harm anyone or anything.

Doom :: DOOM
▷ Sizing ◁
Medium
▷ Plural ◁
Dooms
▷ Diet ◁
Carnivores

Obedient, sweet, and loyal, dooms make lovely pets if one can get past their physical peculiarities. Bred exclusively by ghoulie settlements until recent years, they share the same ability to hide in shadows if frightened or hunting, making them hard to find at times. While they ooze it is within a contained area, often returning to their body once landing. Despite their ooze, they are warm and soft to the touch.

They bond quickly with their owner, often selecting only one as their person. They have a hard time bonding if rehomed, with some never moving on from their previously bonded.

Dooms cannot see, lacking any eyes to speak of and instead rely on nearby sound to get about.

▷ Abilities ◁
Echolocation
Shadow traveling

Dooms can get about by using echolocation with their mouth. They also can travel through shadows like ghoulies.

Frolic :: FRAH-lik
▷ Sizing ◁
Medium
▷ Plural ◁
Frolic
▷ Diet ◁
Herbivore

Incredibly rare, many ponies will never see a frolic in their lifetime. This is due to the fact that wild frolic are protected by their guardian and come from an unknown pocket world connected to Everchange that can only be opened by the guardian's staff. Frolic leave this portal every December, returning back home once the month is up (or staying if they've found an owner!).

Frolic are gentle creatures, choosing affection as their answer to everything.

▷ Abilities ◁
Flight
Intent Sensing

Frolic can fly, although they naturally prefer to keep their hooves on the ground. Their crystalline wings remind many of a kelain, yet they serve an entirely different purpose; they can sense the intentions of those around them, resulting in a faint vibration in their wings when danger is present. They make a great companion for younger ones as a result, helping foals stay out of harm's way and avoid more sinister ponies.
