What It Is
Nestled with its entrance only a few blocks from the city's port, the Doveport Pokémon Enrichment Facility was one of the first buildings constructed on Nauwill. Conceived as a way to help stimulate the pokémon of workers otherwise needed in the colony's settlement, the DPEF - or just, "the peff" - is a combination of a imposing two-story building and a sizeable three acres of forested yard and green pasturage, as well as a broad, netted-in section of the local beach and coast; it is currently run by one Ezra Ramirez, a man both extremely passionate and very serious about his work. Its services are offered freely to colonists of the region, although temporary visitors - such as the surveyors, seasonal builders, and delivery personnel - incur a reasonable rate for the same.
The DPEF offers a variety of activities for pokémon of all sorts, with its employees trained on how to handle the calmest and most cooperative babies to the most raucous and grouchy old 'mons. There are socializing areas to teach pokémon how to behave with and, for some, communicate with others; there are play zones, with toys and games appropriate to a variety of sapience levels, dedicated for relaxing and unwinding. There is even a media zone for pokémon with a high intelligence level, allowing them to watch or listen to their favorite shows, new movies, or a wide collection of music. The entire second floor doubles as a training and exercise facility, allowing pokémon to burn off excess energy and practice their battle prowess with one of the DPEF's highly-skilled ace trainers; it's equipped with the highest quality fireproof materials, and its advanced drainage system allows any excess water to be scrubbed of dangerous materials and pumped directly to the community water supply!
Trainers needn't worry about their pokémon having a long stay, either. The head of DPEF himself is a trained nutritionist, and several more work alongside him to ensure that the needs of all present pokémon are met. Fresh foods are delivered regularly for preparation, and powerful sunlamps are available at all times of the day for photosynthetic pokémon. A pile of mineral rich ore and rocks is located behind the building for rock and steel types, and several charging stations, powered by solar panels installed on the facility's roof, are available for pokémon that consume energy directly. All food intake is monitored by staff, and no trainer should worry that their pokémon won't be well fed when left in their care!
Fairlight Co. would like to remind all colonists that the Doveport Pokémon Enrichment Facility is not, and never has been, a daycare. This note is relevant as the DPEF also doubles as the care and storage facility for excess pokémon eggs found within its walls. As there are often quite a few pokémon within its walls and grounds, incidents of eggs do happen from time to time.
Officially, pokémon breeding is still a mystery; they are obviously known to have eggs, and pokémon both in captivity and the wild are periodically found with them. That much makes sense, but no one has, so far, ever caught an actual visual of how pokémon make eggs. While there are plenty of low-brow guesses by the public, scientific opinion actually leans more towards some sort of combined release of energy that coalesces into a baby pokémon's egg, where it continues its development. This hypothesis has been helped by the fact that only similar pokémon seem to be able to produce an egg thus far, and some odd happenings on Nauwill have bolstered the idea. However, other, stranger developments recently come to light have possibly thrown off everything researchers thought they knew in the first place!
Unlike other regions, any pokémon seem to be able to produce eggs, as isolated pairings of very different 'mons have been found with a clutch between them. Clutch, of course, being a key word, as though typically pokémon only produce one egg at a time, pokémon on Nauwill have been found with as many as five! Scientists attribute this to an effect of one of the island's unique minerals or energy expulsions, though they haven't figured out which.
Even stranger, certain crystals found only on the region seem to react strongly with pokémon eggs, rapidly heating and bursting in their presence. The resulting dust absorbs quickly into the shells, giving them a glittery sheen for the rest of their incubation time. The pokémon coming from these eggs, however, are unlike anything seen before - mere small fragments of these powerful crystals sometimes seem to cause a pokémon to be colored like the 'other' parent (such as one instance of a jigglypuff with a pikachu's markings), where as a full showering of crystalline dust can cause a young pokémon's entire body to warp, giving them features they wouldn't otherwise inherit (like an eevee with several tails - wow!). Colloquially, these are called "fusion" fragments and crystals, though many of the scientists on the island dislike the name.
