Expedition Area: Area 002 - Darksallow Valley (Beginner)

Tori took a deep breath. She hadn't even left Doveport yet and she was already just a little nervous. Every other time she'd headed out to Darksallow Valley, she'd had at least one other person for company. This would be the first time she ever headed out on her own, but everything was going to go fine! Yes she could have gone out onto the Newbreeze Grasslands and probably been just fine, but she wanted to help with the research that was actually needed. Not only that, but nobody she had talked to had seen whatever the flying type pokemon was that lived in the forest and she was dying with curiosity. She had to know!

Flying wasn't even her favorite type but she'd already seen some variations to the water types in this area so who was to say this new pokemon wasn't water type as well? Puffing out her cheeks, Tori nodded to herself, she was going to find it. Everything was going to go fine. She decidedly ignored the fact that Pearl was looking at her like she was crazy as she finished packing everything up. Restocked medkit, snacks for the road, a small meal in case they were out long enough to need one, Pearl and Caspian's poke balls, Tori checked everything off the list her twin had oh-so-helpfully given her so she didn't forget anything important. Then checked it a second time.

Finally as prepared as she was going to be, she patted her leg to get Pearl to come to her. "Alright Pearl, time for the pokeball until we get to the forest." Caspian was already tucked away and Tori didn't want to tire out her alolan vulpix before they even arrived. Even if she did give her a bit of a stink-eye for having to go back in the ball so quickly.

Swinging her bag into a comfortable position, Tori left. Pausing only long enough to lock up after herself, she went straight to the gate nearest the caverns. With a quick nod to the guard at the gate, she bounced along on the trail that was forming from all the traffic to and from the cavern. It was a lovely day and she was absolutely not thinking about how she wasn't going to get to experience much sun after she entered the forest. Nope, no sirree. There was a nice breeze and plenty of sunlight right now and she was going to have two of her favorite pokemon with her.

At the edge of the cavern that lead to the forest Tori paused. With a shiver from the lack of sun and the eerie look of the trees, she let out Pearl and had to shake herself. The sinkhole that she'd fallen into had been blocked off and she was going to have a great time. She was manifesting it! She was going to find SO much and bring back so many things that the researchers back at town were going to lose their marbles.

"Alright Pearl, let's see what we can find!"

Wild Battle

Wild battle​ One or more aggressive pokémon attack! Roll 1-100 and determine which pokémon you've found from the area's chart; all players find the same pokémon, so only one person needs to roll. Each player is allowed to roll one of their pokémon's STR or SPEC + VIT or DEX vs the event's difficulty, if they brought a pokémon; if they fail, that pokémon loses 2 VIT. If a player succeeds, they can roll their character's DEX + their choice of ball's Catch Score vs the event's difficulty to try and catch one of the now defeated wild pokémon. At least one player must roll against a wild mon during this event.

The first few steps were quiet, too quiet. Tori didn't want to spend the entirety of the trip in silence, so she let out Caspian too. The moment they were out, they let out a soft chiming sound and Tori's mood was instantly lifted. She felt a little bad when Caspian looked around as if searching for the other chingling that had been around almost every other time they'd been out in the forest.

"Sorry Caspian, just me and Pearl today," she said, reaching out to pet the little bell. With one soft, not quite sad sound, Caspian began looking around as they continued to carefully make their way further into the woods. "I did bring some snacks for the trip so if either of you get hungry tell me!" Not that either of them could understand much beyond snacks but it made Tori feel better to talk to them.

It seemed the mention of snacks drew more than just her two pokemon's attention. Something was tugging on her bag and Tori let out a startled screech when she realized one of the native wurmples had somehow made it's way onto her bag.

"Caspian, tackle!" she called, her voice high pitched enough to cover her startled yelp. The chingling charged at the wurmple and knocked it off her bag before letting out an angry chime. The wurmple growled, but Caspian was not worried about it in the slightest and tackled the bug again at Tori's command. It looked like it wasn't going to put up more of a fight and Tori pulled out a research ball. With a careful throw, she both hit and caught it.

Absolutely beaming, she made sure to heap praise onto Caspian for their brave work in taking care of the wurmple. It's capture was going to make the researchers back home quite happy.

You hear a splash from some water nearby, and you're just in time to see a group of wild pokémon fleeing from you!

Tori aims towards the nearby river. While it might have plenty of boggy sections and pitfalls it was also the best source of water she'd seen in this forest. Pip's point last time of there being both water pokemon and also that pokemon would come here for a drink was a good one and she could follow it for a time to see if she could find any other weird things.

Other than the soft chime of her chingling, the forest was eerily quiet. Whether it was from her trekking through the forest or from something else, she wasn't sure. Tori was starting to think maybe it was her scaring off the pokemon when the ground suddenly gave way beneath her. Yelping, Tori kept from panicking as her leg went into the muck. A few calming breaths and she looked around. Pearl was safely out of range and Caspian was floating next to her, worried. Sparing a moment to gently pat the chingling calm, she braced herself and then carefully pulled herself from the hole.

More careful movements and she was out of range of the edge and back onto stable ground. Looking down at her leg her face crinkled into an expression of disgust. One of her legs was nearly entirely covered in mud and she was going to need to wash this pair of shoes. Good news about the river, she would be able to rinse the worst of it off.

She had just finished using the river water to wipe away the worst of the muck when a splash that wasn't from her caught her attention. Looking up she caught a glimpse of a group of nauwillian wurmple scurrying away from her. Not even thinking about it she reached for a research ball and threw one at the closest wurmple. It was a surprise that she managed to hit it and a bigger one when it actually caught the bug pokemon.

Now she had a pair to bring back! Beaming and forgetting entirely about her wet leg, Tori grabbed up the poke ball to tuck into her bag next to the other one. "Look you two, now we have two new pokemon to bring back to town!"

Trailing along the river, Tori kept a careful eye on where she was putting her feet and also scanning the trees on the way to try and keep an eye out for any bird pokemon. Pearl was pointedly not winding her way between Tori's feet, unlike when they were in the dorm and she couldn't help but be directly where Tori was trying to put her feet. It was keeping Tori from tripping over her own feet.. for now at least.

Keeping an eye on the trees paid off when Tori caught sight of something stuck up in the branches of a tall tree. She debated sending one of her pokemon up to try and get it or knock it down, but she wasn't sure what it was exactly. Thinking it was safer to head up herself, Tori hoisted herself up into the tree. The bark scraped against her bare skin, but she was more interested in the repel? that had been up in the tree. How did that even get there? Weren't repels supposed to repel pokemon?

Mildly confused, Tori tucked the repel into her bag once she was back on the ground. No telling whose it had been and it might come in handy later. Plus she didn't want to litter by putting it back. "Repels in the trees, weird. What has been stealing repels?" she asked her two pokemon, knowing she wasn't going to get a response.

Several of the trees here seem to have deep holes in their sides... Success reveals feathers and claw marks indicate this area is a sleeping spot for some kind of avian pokémon.

Her attention divided between the path forward and branches in the surrounding trees, Tori nearly missed the deep holes in several of the nearby trees. They were pretty high up so she couldn't be sure, but she thought they might be like the ones she'd found on her last trip out. Without climbing up there, which she wasn't going to do a second time, she wouldn't be able to say for sure. It might just be wurmple or something eating into the bark.

"Caspian, Pearl, what do you say? Do you think it's worth it to try and climb up there to find out?" Pearl's answer was to paw at her leg in a request to be picked up and Tori figured that was answer enough. She couldn't climb trees with Pearl in her arms. Cradling her like she liked, Tori started circling in a bit wider of an area around the holey trees. She wasn't about to climb those ones, but there might be more on a tree that was closer to the ground.
