Aspenswirl had intended it for it to be a usual training session - just a hunting mission to scoop up some prey and check to see how Thymepaw's scent identification was coming along, really. Aspenswirl had meant for it to be an easy thing, but one bad turn around a large pine tree and now they were face to face with a badger. Aspenswirl shoved his way in front of his apprentice and snarled at the badger. Maybe if he could hold it off long enough, Thymepaw would be able to run off and get help! Unfortunately he didn't have any time to explain this to his apprentice before the badger growled fiercely at the two cats.

Unsheathing his claws, Aspenswirl launched himself at the badger, aiming his attack for the eyes. He didn't encounter many badgers, but a blinded enemy was always easier to face than one with sight... right?

HP: 10

(Aspenswirl has landed a hit on the badger for 5 points of damage!)

Thymepaw had experienced death, sort of, already, in the death of his brother, Fennelkit. He'd heard the stories, about how there used to be another Clan called SunClan that you'd go to when you died, but Lostsun and Mothwing, his brother's mentor, seemed to think that SunClan had disappeared, or... that they'd gone missing? They weren't accessible to LostClan anymore, which made him wonder and worry... Was there anywhere to go when a cat died?

Where did Fennelkit go? Where would Sorrelpaw and Thymepaw and their parents go? The only answer he'd been able to come up with so far was "into the soil." Which was... bleak to some, but he got the impression from his mother, Bone, that plenty of life was born from the soil. Maybe it wouldn't be too bad to feed the soil, since it grew herbs for his mother to collect.

That said, even with all of his knowledge and worries for death, Thymepaw had been sheltered. By his parents, by his brother, Sorrelpaw and by his mentor, to what extent Aspenswirl could. But accidents tended to happen, things that no cat could predict and therefore could truly protect Thymepaw from.

As he looked up at the badger in horror, cowering as Aspenswirl launched forward and slashed at the burly creature's tiny eyes, he felt cold dread seep into his fur like lake water.

Am I going to be eaten by the badger, or by the soil? He thought, but his claws unsheathed and he found himself standing. It was better him, than letting this badger go any further, to Sorrelpaw or his mother and father! He already lost one brother, he wasn't going to endanger Sorrelpaw by letting this badger roam free!

With a hiss, he darted to the badger and tried to slice anywhere his claws could land.

HP: 5

(Thymepaw misses his attack!)

The lumbering black and white beast had just been minding its own business when the scent of cat flooded over it suddenly. Obnoxious little things, cubs who think they're grown. But they could be a nuisance in numbers, so the badger lowered themselves to the ground and growled furiously.

But the cats didn't heed its warning and instead lashed out with sharp claws. It roared in pain and anger and rose up, ready to strike with its powerful claws.

Aspenswirl had been so confident that he'd be able to defend against this badger for long enough for Thymepaw to escape, but to his great dismay, Thymepaw hadn't run off - he came in trying to fight. It didn't seem like the badger took any heed of the apprentice, not yet and Aspenswirl fluffed out his tail and leaped towards the large creature again, though his attention was divided - Thymepaw had to get out of here, and he shouted as much.

"Go get help!" He hissed to his apprentice. If this was some sort of need to prove that Thymepaw was capable - this was the wrong time for the apprentice to try and make a statement like that. They were lucky the badger hadn't retaliated in a meaningful way yet, but no one could guess how long that was going to continue to be! "Thymepaw, go now!"

(Aspenswirl misses!)

Thymepaw could only hear the sound of his own heartbeat as he scrambled to attack the badger again. He had to protect his family, he had to protect his Clan. They wouldn't go anywhere if they died, Lostsun said SunClan abandoned them. He didn't want to disappear, to get buried and eaten by the bugs in the ground. He wanted to live! He wanted to live to see himself and Sorrelpaw grow into warriors! He wanted to see his mother again! He wanted to snuggle up with his father after this battle and fall asleep to the sound of Leopardthroat purring!

So he struck out again, deaf to the demands of his mentor - and he still missed. Squirrel-dung! Well, he'd just have to try again and again, until his Clan was safe and he could go back home to join them.

(Thymepaw's attack misses!)

Filled with anger and annoyance at these trespassers' gall, the lumbering creature stepped back as paws swiped at them, dodging those painful tiny claws. But it would not move from atop its set. No way would it allow such pests into its home! It lashed out again with its powerful digging claws, but the nimble kits danced out of the way.

Aspenswirl had barely enough time to consider the fact the fact that his apprentice seemed to be blatantly ignoring him, before the badger moved to attack again. With a yowl of frustration, he swiped his claws against the badger's nose, trying not to notice the sharp teeth hairs below. Pulling away, he moved to intercept Thymepaw. If the apprentice wouldn't listen to verbal attacks, Aspenswirl could at least be by the apprentice's side to protect him in the face of physical attacks from the enemy.

(Aspenswirl lands a hit for 5 damage!)

Thymepaw felt anger and embarrassment bubbling up within him. He couldn't land a single hit, no matter how he tried! The badger was too big, its pelt too thick. What if he couldn't do anything in this situation except let himself be killed? He shook himself, the image of his family burning into his mind. He couldn't leave Sorrelpaw behind. His parents had each other, but Sorrelpaw had always been there for him and Thymepaw was determined to always be there for Sorrelpaw too.

With a mighty roar (that sounded more like a charming squeak) Thymepaw looked the badger right in the eye and attempted to slice it in half!

(Thymepaw misses his attack!)

Aspenswirl snarled fiercely at the beast as it swung towards Thymepaw. Moving up to his apprentice, he shoved the spotted youngster out of reach of the beast they fought, and was relieved to find that the badger missed its attack.

With a deep, heaving breath, Aspenswirl spun back around to face the badger and slashed out with his claws, striking anywhere in hopes to do any damage at all.

Thymepaw could feelhis energy dwindling, the only thing that seemed to keep him going was the thought of protecting his brother, his parents, his mentor and his Clan. If Fennelkit had lived, Thymepaw was certain that his sibling would be fighting among them, never giving up and doing their best against the enemy.

With the strength of his family at his back, and his mentor doing all he could to keep Thymepaw out of harm’s way, he leaped on top of the badgers long snout and dug his claws and fangs into the badger’s face.

(Thymepaw lands a hit for 3 damage!)

Aspenswirl had been so relieved to land a hit, but relief in the midst of battle was to be his downfall. While he was able to get away from the swinging claws of the badger - something that would've surely resulted in some fatal injury - he missed his opportunity to attack. More than that, Thymepaw was swinging precariously from the badger's muzzle and Aspenswirl let out a call of alarm.

Why, oh why, had his apprentice chosen to attack so close to the large teeth of their enemy?!

Thymepaw had made his initial attack, he could smell blood under his claws and he was certain it wasn't his! However, the small apprentice couldn't keep his grip on the nose of the badger and he felt himself slipping. Struggling to scrape his claws against the badger's nose as he tumbled off the beast, he landed with a thud on the ground, his belly exposed to the looming enemy above him.

The enemy is weak. Choose now, do your cats commit to the kill or chase it off?

If you choose to continue fighting, you are consenting to have your participating cat entered into a death raffle should their hp hit 0. If you survive the fight and kill your opponent, you have earned a free battle scar edit to add to your cat!

If you choose to chase off your opponent instead, all cats will live and the battle ends here. There are no rewards for this except for the safety of your cats.

If the vote is not unanimous, the enemy will be chased away by default.
